Oh. Dear. Fucking. God.

Why does everything have to be hyper-stylized these days? That looks like utter shit!

I could draw a better prime in paint.

Actually, I think I will.

What the? What the HELL?!!

Good thing I stopped caring about Tformer cartoons ages ago. I think I got some Armada time in and gave up before Energon.

Here is what I don't really get...

People say things like: "I hope [the movie] is true to the source material".

Um... What source material?

The cartoon contradicted itself all the time, beast machines does not really fit in at all with their cybertron version. The autobots literally DROVE FROM AMERICA TO INDIA IN 2 HOURS (episode changing gears), they could randomly fly or not fly depending on what scene they were in, they changed size all the time to fit plot devices, etc... The cartoon (at least G1) was an utter mess. I am rewatching the shows, and even putting aside some of the most awful dialog ever ("As the humans would say, 'fat chance' fat-head"), and the sometimes random paintjobs, the shows EACH have at least 10-20 glaring logic flaws packed into a 20 minute show.

Then you have the comics, which are actually a little better than the show at being consistent, but as with most comics it depends on who the author was at any given period in time.

But there is no doubt that the comics have their own continuity. In fact they have SEVERAL. The UK comic diverged from the US one after a few years because they could not keep their authors on the same page with the very different release schedules.

Then you have the DW stuff that diverges some more.

Then you have the IDW relaunch by Furman (I like this relaunch a lot myself, similar to the Marvel Ultimate series)

So the movie is not in ANY of these continuities. It is another relaunch similar to the IDW relaunch. It's a new take on the Transformers. I have not read the script so I don't know if it is any good, probably not, but it looks like it could be fun visually. I just hope it is better than Independence Day and I-Robot.

PS:
I bought the Leader series Optimus Prime and he is awesome.
I have seen the Bumblebee $80 figure online, is that the first of the $80 line (I forget what they call it)? I saw a list of about 8 that someone claimed would be part of that uber line. Somewhat annoyed to see another prime there, silly me thought the leader series was going to be the best prime. Is that awesome bumblebee metal or plastic?

In fact the whole Beast Wars series as well as the spinoff Beast Machines were all really good but Beast Machines is alot different from Beast Wars.

Beast Wars (I never really got into Beast Machines that much) was probably the best Transformers series to every appear on TV. Motherfucking DINOBOT bitch.

Christ let's cut the 'end in tears' topics before they go to horrible places, please. Let it be an appreciation thread. IE movie hate discussion as well as 'favorite series' discussion.

I am as much an old school Tformer lover as anyone, and the movie looks kick ass, my comments were reserved for whatever tragedy that new cartoon Optimus sprang from. I won't even touch Beast Wars, I'll just say I'm not a fan of it at all.

The new Toys function/transform well, but I hate the aesthetics on them, so I'm avoiding this line. First line I avoided since Beast Wars/Machines really. I would recommend them though to anyone new to Tformers in general.

You have a good point. When people say that I think they mean they want it to be true to the spirit of transformers. The whole 'autobots fighting decepticons for control of the earth's energy while transforming into awesome cars and stuff' angle. As much as I love the old shows I can't defend all the hilarious plot holes and inconsistencies. That's not what people want them to be true to. What they want is Optimus to be a total bad ass red truck and megatron to be a big gun, starscream to be a scheming trickster. You know, all the stuff that made the show and the comics interesting in the first place.

If they're going to change it all around what's the point in calling it Transformers, other than to draw on that name recognition? There really isn't one, and that's what people have a problem with. Nobody wants to see their childhood heroes bastardized to make a buck.

It's also debatable that movies which stick closer to the original subject matter tend to be better, while those that take huge liberties tend to be bad. I can understand them wanting to draw in new fans, but the thing is if you want to draw in new fans, why don't you...oh I don't know, create a whole new property? It seems when hollywood makes major changes to a property to try and make it accessible to new fans, they end up alienating old ones and creating something that no one really enjoys. Since you brought up "I, Robot" I think that's a pretty good example.

Either way I don't care anymore. The movie will be what it will be, and it's guaranteed to have some awesome effects and giant robot ass-kicking. I'm going to judge it based on it's own merit.

Completely unrelated, what was the name of the show your avatar/sig is from? I remember enjoying the hell out of it, but can't remember the name for the life of me right now.
