This new Sun of Nothing album is really interesting so far. What I've heard goes from extreme doom to ambient to grindcore. Check it out, yo.

edit: OMS new Lifelover next year!! ahhhhhhhhh

I haven't listened to anything remotely metal in days.

Someone gave me the Beirut album and I've been in indie mode for hours.

Well, I'm back with your weekly dose of stoner rock.

http://www.myspace.com/winterstheband

Excellent psychedelic, stoner rock outfit from England.

Proclamation (Spain) - 'Advent of the Black Omen'

Ungodly, disturbing, primal black/death with even a hint of grind.

I'll be honest, half the time I can't even make out what they are playing, it's a total mess. But then they'll bust into this total evil oldschool Entombed-style riff and my neck breaks in two.

And who wouldn't want to be friends with them? Not I. Not I.

Also, this is pretty awesome:

Pyuria (Finland) 'Obliette Ontology'

Finnish thrash/death, occasionally a little technical, and they use that very dense oldschool Swedish guitar sound so if you like your old Entombed, Dismember, Grave, etc then you may just dig it. Groovy.

And now with more awesome:

Emptiness (Belgium) 'Oblivion'

Great death metal! Very cool riffs and great, dense vibe to it!

If you haven't already, definitely Dark Tranquillity and Soilwork.

Also, to a lesser extent, Killswitch Engage and All That Remains. They're more standard American metalcore bands (as opposed to contemporary melodic death metal, or whatever one may call it), but I've run in to many people who mix them in with In Flames (myself included) on playlists and the like.

I'd also recommend Scar Symmetry. I mostly listen to melodic death. It took me a little while to get into them, but I absolutely love Scar Symmetry now. Plus the new Arch Enemy is good, and I think Doomsday Machine is one of my favourites.

Ok I'm liking Soilwork. Drak Tranquillity are good, but I think I prefer my metal having both Soft and Loud vocals. Thanks for the suggestions.

If you like Soilwork, definitely give Disarmonia Mundi a listen. Same vocalist, similar sounding style overall.

And although they're not as heavy and more gothic in style, try Before The Dawn as well, particularly this year's album. Good mix of clean/harsh vocals, great melodies.

The Nekrasov album seems good, but you have to turn it up to hear half of the stuff going on.

edit: definitely enjoying this, it's kinda like horror ambience/lofi bm. There's been at least one song so far that had the sound levels change halfway through, totally kvlt. Any fans of black metal and the totally obscure and classic horror ambience style as abused by such noted bands as Blutgericht and Dark Forest should check this out [/shill]

All good bands, but I'm surprised that Opeth hasn't been mentioned. They're not really as aggressive as In Flames or Dark Tranquility but they mix clean and harsh vocals often, and throw in a lot of acoustic melody with a bunch of prog elements. In fact prog rock is probably their biggest influence besides death metal. The songs are mostly long and you really just have to dive in there and give them a couple of listen to really enjoy them. I'd suggest starting with the album Blackwater Park.

Man, "A Symbol of Eight" shouldn't have been cut from the regular version of Those Once Loyal - it kicks way too much ass.

I don't have anything against Lamb of God (except for some ridiculously stupid things that one of the guys tends to say). I don't have anything against their fans, either. As fellow metal heads, or at least appreciators of metal, there's a certain kindred spirit shared between us all.

So... why has it that the last three times I've worn my CORRUPTED shirt some kid in a Lamb of God shirt instantly strikes up a conversation that ultimately turns into an argument when I say, "Nah. I don't care for them."

Sorry to vent here, but I couldn't even go get a freakin turkey sandwich today without being called a fraud because I don't like Lamb of God. I keep citing them specifically, because each of the three times it's happened, the little twat monkey had a LoG shirt on.

I don't get it.

They probably wouldn't like Corrupted, but I'm not gonna say they aren't "true".

Blah.

EDIT

Like in the indie thread, I'll pimp out my vanity label here as well...

www.shortforest.com

There. It's done. The current release out right now is a 7 inch by WOLFMANGLER, the alter ego of Dead Raven Choir. Former Texas, now Poland based harsh as fuck Black Metal. Covers various songs, some from Towns Van Zant, Hank Williams, etc.

All Hail Smolken

I don't feel any 'kindred spirit' with the mouthbreathers who listen to that shit, black dahlia murder, etc.

I can usually hope for a, "Hey, you're into sick metal too, eh?" And a nod and a wink and that's the end of it.

I'm not sure where this whole "challenge the guy with the Corrupted shirt" nonsense got started.

Because modern/mainstream metalheadz feel the need to ascribe to the "trveness" (read: just another scene/clique) of classic metal, but they know that their bands aren't exactly liked, so they get defensive about it. oh and people are dicks about different music tastes :/

And I wasn't bagging on your post in the indie thread, I just figured you could contribute to this one as well. I was wondering about your list - did you not like Om's new album? Figured you'd dig it, with your name, ha.

oh, and I haven't been giving the Chthonian album as much love as it deserves.

I like it. But it's pretty much what the last two albums were. I wish Al would just shut the hell up and jam for a bit. That's what I loved most about Dopesmoker/Jerusalem.

The second track on the album is great, but short. Great riffs, though. First track, and the coda at the end of the album, I didn't really care for.

New High on Fire kinda let me down too.

Anyway. I know you from another forum. Hmmm.

/me thinks.

You make me seethe with Cisneros fanboy rage. For the bolded part especially, but the rest as well.
