The G&T Venting, Ranting, and Argument Thread :

Old 10-10-2007, 06:01 PM
Alright, putting forth something a bit different here but I thought it could be fun. Potentially disastrous of course too but what the hell? Basically, this is a thread for games and technology related posts and arguments that find themselves off-topic in other threads. Instead of dragging down that thread with an argument about friend codes, the correct color of the NES Zapper, anti-PS3 propaganda, console game lineups, and so forth, just battle it out here until you are satisfied. Or lets say that you just want to rant about how you think game reviews should be done or vent about how much a game you eagerly anticipated sucks. Again, feel free to do that here if it doesn't seem to fit anywhere else.

Yeah but . . . why? Because I think the off-topic conversations in a lot of threads are often pretty interesting and contain some good points. Plus there seem to have been a lot lately due to numerous recent announcements, releases and reviews for major games, and varying levels of bias toward it all.

Some ground rules before we start off:

1. Lets all keep things related to this particular forum. No venting about how much your day sucked unless it involved something like being raped when you traded in a game and then almost killed when a nearby aisle of shovelware collapsed on top of you. This may be an off-topic discussion thread but its still an on-topic forum. This thread is not a publicly accessible LiveJournal.

2. Lets keep things somewhat civil and structured here. If you are going to call someone a fucking retard, at least help them out by providing sufficient evidence as to why they are fucking retarded and why you think their opinion is wrong. Try not to be insulting just for the sake of being insulting though.

3. You may go ahead and post something here that would be considered trolling elsewhere, but at least be prepared to backup your particular claim or argument with some rationale. Unpopular opinions are fine, just don't post something purely for the sake of pissing people off.

4. These rules are of course subject to change based on mod discretion. And no this is not SE, shut up.

5. Above all, just use common sense and everything should be just fine and dandy.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

Whoo! Now that all of that is over with, I'll go ahead and start us off.

Venting and ranting:

Most of us here would consider ourselves hardcore gamers but there are of course varying meanings to this. But should there be? The way I see it, being a hardcore anything simply means that you spend a lot of time and money on your particular hobby or activity, or you consider yourself to be very proficient at it. So really, being a hardcore gamer simply means that you buy games often and spend a lot of time playing them or you consider yourself to be very skilled at playing certain titles or genres of video games. And really, if you see yourself as being especially proficient at playing certain games, the first two criteria that I think would define someone as being a hardcore gamer probably apply to you anyway. Very simple really.

Occasionally I see a message board where there is someone trying to tell some other anonymous person that they are not a real gamer unless they meet some cryptic and obtuse criteria. This one especially gets to me: "you're not a real gamer unless you own all three systems" (Wii, PS3, 360).

Alright look, I hate to make a judgment call here because I obviously don't really know you, but you're fucking retarded. Let me tell you why. I really should not have to with this but I will anyway. You see, for some people this isn't feasible or particularly sensible with their financial situation or their excess free time that they can just throw money at all three different systems or find the time to play all the games they want. Maybe this person does other things from time to time and is not quite as hardcore as you. Great, you own all three systems and are certainly into gaming, but don't say that other people aren't gamers just because they don't go to certain extremes. Hell, maybe a certain system just doesn't really appeal to them.

Not hardcore.

No, they just aren't going to buy that console because the desire to do so isn't there for them and thats fine. Also, I really hate using the term gamer anyway. Whats the consensus on that one I wonder?

Arguing:

Arguing to follow soon.

Alright, now go ahead with the postings! Vent!

obviously what goes and what doesn't is down to the mods, but there are certain games that should not be mentioned, for the sake of this thread's continued existence.

edit: But i'll jump in. I don't like different classifications on how much of a 'gamer' you are, or what you do. Hardcore, casual, whatever, i'm not happy using those terms, especially when being thrown around as veiled elitism. I've played a lot of games across a variety of platforms, and i have my own opinions and views about what's good, what's not, and what i like. I can acknowledge that a game is good, even if it's not one i enjoy. Similarly, i can acknowledge that i game i enjoy may be rubbish. When you start trying to classify people and their habits, it just becomes pigeonholing, which is never a good thing to be doing.

Guys, I want to talk about the Halo series and Final Fantasy VII. What's with the massive hype and love for these games? I mean, sure, they looked pretty on the systems they came out on, but in every other respect they royally su--

People should not come into any thread not about a Wii game and say, "This would be so awesome/better on the Wii."

In that case, you must go back in time and stop everyone from complaining about RE4 being Cube exclusive.

I want new IPs from Nintendo. One without Mario's name in the title.

I think most anime is bad enough, so you have my full support on that notion.

I mean, there is seriously a sequel to this? Blah.

This is a silly statement. Of course you think most anime is bad. Please, try to name one medium of entertainment where you think the majority of what it produces is good. Are most videogames good? No. Are most movies good? No. Is most TV good? No. Books? No. Paintings? No. Plays? No.

Everyone involved in the "hardcore/real gamer" argument is fucking stupid. Accusing someone of not being "hardcore" as though that's something worth giving a shit about is as dumb as it gets. Who gives a fuck about the "hardcoreness" of some random gamer? Responding to this accusation with anything more than eye-rolling is almost as stupid because you're saying that this is something worth arguing about. The whole thing is a sport competed in by fickle, pin-headed zealots.

A higher percentage of anime is bad compared to any other medium available on earth, past and future.

Bad anime tends to be some of the more popular anime, though.

Also, a gamer is a person who plays games.

Well, I meant that I think that by and large, anime in particular sucks.

Ghost in the Shell was alright, but most of it is crap popular among Japanophiles who like it simply because its Japanese.

I'd really like to see you justify that statemet. Onus is on you, buddy.

And yeah, a lot of the popular anime in america is bad crap. But, most of the time that's because it's not for you. Seriously, it's aimed at like 12-14 year old boys in japan. It gets brought over to American with the same target market, and then 20 something year olds are like "oh, this is crap!".

Morons.

Edit: Rehab, by and large, books suck. Seriously. Pick up a random book off the shelf at any book stores, odds are it will suck HARD.

The problem is when people older than 12-14 insist that it is good, quality stuff that is not intended for children but only appears that way because of the evil dubbing companies ruining the series.

As someone who was once 12-14 however, I can definitely get behind the fact that that shit is awesome at that age.

Yeah dude, DBZ rocked my socks when I was like 12. It was AMAZING. But if I liked DBZ now (i'm 20) I'd hope someone would punch me in the head.

I'll say that the real problem with anime, is that no matter how good, or well written or deep it is, unless you speak japanese, you risk losing alot in translation. Of course, this goes for any entertainment not originally made in a language you can understand.

This isn't useful for any discussion, though.

Say a DS game developer asks the question, "will a lot of gamers like this sidescroller?"

"Well, percentage-wise, they won't, considering 80% of gamers don't actually play video games, but instead play sports or board/card games."

So he revamps the statement: "will a lot of videogamers like this sidescroller?"

"The answer's still no, since most videogamers are secretaries who play Bejeweled and Solitaire."

You have to classify people somehow. The problem comes from stupid overclassification, but you have to indicate whether you mean people who visit PA or every preschooler who has rich parents.

Yeah, that's definitely true. That's why I cut legitimately good anime some slack when a line is a little cheesy or oddly phrased.

I'm glad that the consensus here is that most anime sucks.

Although, I have to admit that I used to like Dragon Ball Z.
