Captain Cthulhu, you have a sweet bike, how do you like riding fixed?
Pedals, traps or clipless? Do you find that you wear through tires quickly with all the fun that is long skids?

oh boy I love when people ask about my bike!
First, I love riding fixed. Not only does it afford me the fun of skidding, trackstanding, slow wheelies (which I can't really do well yet) and all sorts of other stuff, but it lets me have a way to control my speed without relying entirely on brakes, which is really nice on these wet streets.
Second, I could never ride clipless on a fixed, I'd always be afraid of my feet popping out while I was spinning at full tilt. I ride Soma quad gates with dual Christophe single straps.

I love them to death, it really makes it feel like every part of the front of my foot is one with my pedals.
Third, I've yet to wear through a tire from skidding. However, I have blown an inordinate number of rear tubes from being a maniac. I run blue Michelin speediums now, which I pretty slick, hard tires anyway. They're been the source of a couple of wet pavement eating incidents, but again, I ride like a maniac. In Seattle, no road tires will hold up to July speeds in October. |
