Apparently,a rumor's going around that personal achievements will be coming to older source games including: Half-Life 2, Half-life 2 episode 1, Day of Defeat Source, and Counter-Strike Source. In addition, Team Fortress 2 will be getting more achievements.
I know everyone hates Joystiq but I'm too lazy to look elsewhere.
Barf. First the menu screen for UT3 is impossible to navigate with a mouse and now they want to put xbox things in my computer games... man PC gaming is going down the shitter fast.
Please elaborate. How is achievements a bad thing just because they originated on the Xbox?

Its not the fact that its an "Xbox" thing really... its just that most achivements are inane like "fall 100 feet to your death" or "kill 10 people with the rocket launcher in 20 seconds" that sure sounds like fun... everyone on the server whoring rocket launchers to get the achievement.
"Achievements" have always been in gaming. Any final fantasy game will give you an uber sword if you spend hours collecting dumb shit... but at least it gives you something other than a large e-penis.

Your posts aren't making much sense.
I don't see how I could be any clearer. :|
Maybe you just disagree with me?
Just in case theres still some confusion:
Achievments that reward you for doing things totally out of the scope of the game (example: Falling 100 feet to your death... they have something like that in COD 4) for an online shooter is going to just encourage people to do that shit in game when people like me are just tying to win the match and I think its distracting. Things like that for single player? Knock yourself out. But for online? It'll just be annoying. Like people whoring the achievments on TF2.
I'll stop now becuase Ive broken my own rule about commenting on things even vaugely related to the 360. They can smell my blood already.

Usually people get them out of the way quickly, but yes I agree for the most part, they can be distracting.
Halo 3 was horrible with the achievements because there were lots of them that you could not get without the participation of everyone in the game. That or you had to be extremely lucky in the perfect situation. Stuff like Steppin' Razor where you had to get four kills in four seconds with the sword in ranked Lone Wolves (which had 5 people total in it) were stupid because they simply never happened.
As long as they keep away from achievements like that, the achievements that people specifically gear towards, I'm fine
Achievements should be stuff you really stumble upon. Like you kill a medic and the achievement "Pro-Life" or something pops up and you go "oh wow ok". I always get a good feeling whenever I get an achievement I wasn't specifically going after.
I'm not a huge fan of the "With Friends Like These" achievement (play a game with 8 people on your friends list) for TF2. It's resulted in me getting tons of random useless friend invites by people who want it.

Same here. Is there anyways to clean out your friends list?
I bought the X2/X3 pack since they were on sale a while ago but haven't gotten around to playing them yet. My biggest question is does X3 on steam have starforce or not?

Are any of you interested in a game of Civ4 Beyond the Sword in the near distant future? (perhaps this weekend/on friday)
Man, I bought that Civ4 complete pack thing, I should really get around to playing it (I pretty much finished the tutorial, and haven't touched it since). It's a really deep, interesting game.
So can anybody tell me how Tomb Raider: Anniversary plays with a keyboard and mouse? I am interested in picking it up, but I figure such a game is more suited towards a game pad so I might just pick it up on a console instead.

I jsut started playing it today (yesterday actually, it's around 2AM now) and it plays fine since you can map all the keys how you want. As always the only annoying thing is the camera itself sometimes forcing you to do blind jumps. I just did Croft Manor and got all 8 Artifacts in about 56 minutes.
So has anyone done the garden gnome challenge in Ep 2?
Lots, in the now largely defunct Ep2 thread. I personally couldn't be bothered with it. It seemed like the poster child for idiot achievements that you do "just because they say you can achieve it. I guess I'm with Drool in that I'm not a huge fan of achievements. Thankfully, Ep2 is a singleplayer game and you won't see people dragging gnomes around in HL2 : DM. Unless they intend to throw it at people.
Having got that rant out of the way (sorry), the achievement itself apparently isn't too bad until you get the car, whereby driving anything other than straight causes him to fling himself from the ride. Especially bad on the helicopter chase .
That, and you need to make sure that you carry him through with you pretty closely. There's places you can set him down and get back to him later, but a lot of the time, backtracking is cut off, so you need to be careful of where you place him.

I see a lot of mods posted for HL2, but havent tried any of them besides Insurgency, which wasnt my cup of tea. So anyone have any other recommendations? Any, relatively good, mods in that list worth the download?

I keep whoring it out, but SMOD is awesome. It really adds a bunch of stuff to the game, the only downside is that you'll need to find a list of console commands to get a lot of it working. Lemme see if I can find a list for ya.
Here we go: Spoiler:
First enable cheats by typing sv_cheats 1 into your console. The rest is up to you, choose what sounds best. I recommend the smod settings for the difficulty, ragdoll, and gore modifiers.
exec performance_highperf.cfg - gets rid of special effects for high performance
exec performance_highspec.cfg - adds a bunch of special effects for good looks
exec performance_recomm.cfg - recommended effects

Gore Modifiers
exec gore_extreme.cfg - adds gore-o-plenty
exec gore_hl2.cfg - default hl2 gore levels
exec gore_none.cfg - gets rid of all gore

infinityammo 1 - ammo never goes down, no reloading
r_btscreffect 1 - very cool distortion view when in bullettime
r_motionblur 1 - motion blur.... duh
r_zoomlenseffect 1 - cool effect for the sniper zoom

Don't forget to go into options and bind a key to kick, and one to the slo-mo effect. Otherwise you won't be able to use them, and they're so awesome.

I think The Hidden is totally awesome. It can get pretty nerve wracking when your the last squad member left and you hear the Hidden whisper, "I see you."

I assume you've played through Minerva? It's nearly on the level of a Valve Episode. Plus holograms!
Thanks for the recommendations, i will try Minerva and The hidden. The other one sounds a touch complicated so i maybe i will give that one a pass for now.
I bought Shadowgrounds and shadowgrounds survivor the other day when they were on cheap, haven't played them yet though, as Mario Galaxy is taking all my time.
And I still haven't put any significant time into TF2.
Damnit, I need to quit my job to play all the games
