Goldeneye - Trapped in Limbo edition :

Old 11-28-2007, 10:11 PM
It's probably a bit controversial to post this here... but I think it's something that needs to be said.

A team at Rare are month or two away from completing Goldeneye - 10th Anniversary Edition for Xbox Live Arcade. I've played it, and it's an absolutely fantastic port of the original game, with features such as -
  • Flawless recreation of the original gameplay. This is the original code - just running on an Xbox 360.
  • Rock solid 60 frames a second. (I saw it drop to 30 once when a ton of mines exploded.)
  • All new high def graphics (with the option to switch back to the original N64 graphics any time).
  • 4-way online splitscreen multiplayer - see what the other 3 players can see, even over Live!
  • New multiplayer maps - play on the single player Dam, Depot or Frigate levels.

Now, there's only one small problem - you can't have it.

Negotiations with Nintendo have completely broken down. Satoru Iwata's final word is, roughly, "Goldeneye is a Nintendo product and should only be on a Nintendo platform". The team working on it have been sent home.

For the Xbox haters in the audience: no, this does not benefit you. If it doesn't come out, then neither Goldeneye, nor any other Rare game, will come out on Wii Virtual console in future. (Microsoft aren't that public spirited.) So Nintendo's decision is truly a benefit to nobody.

At this point, it looks like public opinion is the only hope. If you want Goldeneye to ever be rereleased, on a Nintendo platform or otherwise, speak up. Let Nintendo know they're acting like a bunch of jerks.

I'm not sure who this Iwata is..and i'm too lazy to google him right now, but I think the only logical solution is to hop on a plane over to Japan and kidnap his closest living relative
edit: although the online split screen does sound retarded

Wow man that joined today with a totally orriginal name, this sure is some pretty exciting news.

Also when is the orriginal Super Mario Brothers going to be ported to the XBLA?

I find the idea of this project to be pretty suspect. Why would Rare invest capital in something without first obtaining a dependable legal foundation? It's not as though Nintendo was going to be so impressed by the end result that they'd happily hand over the rights and potential profits for the good of the gaming public. Without having the rights from the very beginning, why would you risk something like that? It doesn't make financial sense.

I will only comment that 4-player online splitscreen is goddamn hilarious, and I would be so for that.

Jesus, they should just make a fucking deal already. Something along the lines of XBLA gets Goldeneye and Perfect Dark and the Wii VC gets Banjo-Kazooie and Conker, or something. Keeping the better half of the N64 library in limbo helps no one.

edit: wait just a minute, my bullshit detector just went off! Activision, not Rare, currently holds the James Bond license. You lose, good sir.

My previous point about sharing Rare's N64 work between XBLA and WiiVC still stands, though.

Goldeneye for the N64 is Nintendo's IP just as much as Rare's, and they have no obligation to help out MS. Not that I really think Nintendo has much if anything to do with it - if this post is anywhere remotely approximating something truthful, you should probably look towards whatever company that actually holds the 007 license right now as the one holding the process up.

Or how about Rare just give the original Perfect Dark the same treatment instead, since it could benefit from it a lot more...

Now if only they implemented 4-player online grabbing the other guy's control to screw him up while accusing him of screen-looking.

I thought the biggest problem was the fact that some other company.. like EA or someone... has control over the James Bond license or whatever.

So even if Nintendo said, "Sure go ahead," they'd still need to get the greenlight from EA

also, let me join in on the 'this is a load of shit' sentiment.

If this were true, I would have a boner.

But it's not.

No boner. No dice.

If they were porting any of their N64 games it'd be Perfect Dark anyway, as that's an ongoing Xbox franchise.

The license passed from EA to Activision around the time Casino Royale hit theaters.

So they'd have to get Activision's greenlight.

The whole scenario is full of too many complications to be a simple matter of "Nintendo says no."

Yeah, Activision has even confirmed they're working on two bond titles I think. Both will suck, undoubtedly.

Out of interest, I'm wondering if posting at 5:11 in the am OddJaw is in the UK, and if he's not how he's played a game that'd be at Rare's Twycross HQ. And it's not on the Xbox PartnerNet, either.

That and Perfect Dark is the best console FPS ever.

The engine however is pretty portable and the framerate is not locked in at all, its a game that could benefit greatly from just a straight emulation.

That being said, I'm perfectly happy pulling out my N64 for a round of PD or Goldeneye. I do kind of miss the fact that I'll probably never be able to play JFG or Blast Corps on my Wii, but I'll live.

The hilarious thing is that if he made the same opening post with Perfect Dark instead of Goldeneye, the whole hoax would be far more believable.

As it is, I wish we could voteban around these parts, although that would undoubtedly cause more problems than it would solve.

I played Goldeneye on my N64 the other day.

It still impresses me how much detail they managed to jam into a game during that time. In particular the attention to detail in the levels, lighting, and animation. Truly a masterpiece.

Rare have bought Banjo back, and sometime last year stated they were working on "8 game ideas", so pray, because while that obviously included the inevitable Kameo 2, Perfect Dark Next, Pinata Next and Banjo 360 and a few new IPs, that still leaves room for either of them on 360. JFG would fit in as a nice Ratchet-style affair but for MS, and Blast Corps would benfit greatly from next-gen physics and graphics.

The more I read the OP, the more I wish to facefuck someone with a Maglite...

I apologize, that's not a very reasoned response...but really that whole post makes no sense, and whatever outrage the poster is trying to generate toward Nintendo for no particular reason is going in the wrong direction.

Basically, I just realized that I have been successfully trolled...

I joined today because I don't want to be fired for breach of NDA.

Would a screenshot convince you I'm not making this up?

The online split screen works very well, but I can see it might sound weird on paper. It is optional.
