Edit: top-of-the-page post, and in my limitless affection for Valkyria Chronicles I'm getting rid of crap and posting webcomic images in the hopes of impressing upon you, should you be ignorant of the game, just how awesome it is.
So today I'm feeling rather chipper, so I hoof it around town trying to find a copy of Valkyria Chronicles. I go to The Source, HMV, EB Games, Best Buy, Future Shop, Toys 'R Us, and another EB before I head home, defeated. I totally felt like this:
Spoiler:
Then, upon getting home I decided to call up the local Blockbuster, 'cause why not? Turns out they've got two copies for rent and one for sale, which I happily ask them to hold for me. And lo, their holding was true, for now I have my very own copy of Valkyria Chronicles! How did I feel? Like this:
Spoiler:
After spending about ninety minutes with it, I fixed myself a snack and reflected on my enjoyment of the game so far. I discovered the first words that came to mind were not my own, but Tycho's:
Spoiler:
My ass feels fabulous.
I wasn't sure I'd be able to hold off returning to Fallout 3 (which has held my life in its Deathclaw grip since release), but after (a) hearing about a forthcoming trophy patch and (b) today's awesome get, I think it'll be a while before I return to the wastes.

Do I have to tell you all to shut up once again.
45 dollars. I can't say no.
I accept defeat.
Great, what have you all done to my wallet.
SEGA WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY WALLET?!
$45 is very tempting. I have mine preordered through Amazon where I'll get $10 gift cert to another game, and there I don't have to pay tax. So its only a couple of bucks cheaper at CC if I include the $10.... I guess I'll just let the amazon order go through.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
Sounds like you guys are having as much luck getting copies, as we did over here on friday. Its like stores are trying to keep the release a fucking secret over here. On the day of launch, my game store only got a couple of copies, and they didn't even put them out on shelves. Just kept them behind the desk. When they finally put them out, they didn't even put them anywhere near the new releases section. My friend found it sitting behind a pile of wrestling games, at the very bottom.

Grrr - my EBstop says they are getting thier copies in tomorrow - although it doesn't help that I'm like the only fucking person who ordered this game at that store.
I want to buy this soo bad but the raping that was fallout 3 and C&C red alert 3 collectors editions have broken me. I am also going to miss left 4 dead for a bit as well. =( Stupid flood of awesome!

I can't begrudge you Fallout 3, it deserves its reviews despite all the bugs (which, really, just makes it a true Fallout game). But now that I've gotten my hands on Valkyria I have no trouble waiting for a Trophy patch before I pick up Fallout again.
Anyway - I've discovered scouts really are the backbone of my squad. They get shit done. Also, I forget his name now, but the dude who has 'likes girls' + 'likes boys' is totally my go-to guy after Alicia. He's popping potentials left and right, and hits on everyone.
I had no idea the amount of 'leader' chars (Largo, Rosie and Alicia) you field affects the amount of CP you get. That's cool I suppose, but I'm sure there's some missions where I'd just rather not bring a Lancer, y'know?

I couldn't imagine not having a lancer, my number one tactic is flanking tanks with them. But i can understand where your coming from. I wouldn't always want to start with one out, I normally bring them in with reinforcements.
By chance does the final version fix the weird effect when dead soldiers fall in water? In the demo I shot a guy who slumped to the water, and his body started splashing up and down until the water propelled him back into the shore. ;/
Apparently you can't kill people by blasting them into the water; in the first skirmish I shot a mortar shell onto the lancer next to the river (but lancers don't feel much when shooting explosives at them), he fell into the river, but this wasn't an insta-kill, they simply teleported him back on the shore...
OK, so that's not very realistic, but I can live with that, just as I can live with the sad fact that you can't crush people under your tank. In the beginning, I thought "How unfair! I want to squish people", but when in a mission, I had my tank-repairing engineer, scout and stormtrooper hidden behind my tank to provide for cover, as soon as I turned my tank I hit some of my people, and was very happy that my tank couldn't squish
I just finished my first desert battle, and I officially hate snipers now...
But after that battle two "Desert Bred" recruits got added, one of which was Freesia, that's which Chance mentioned a few pages back.
And when you recruit her, she says something like "Hello big boy! You'll take good care of me, right?"
Just finished the mission before the desert (I'll tackle that tomorrow), and so far I have a single, solitary complaint about the game. I don't think saying this spoils anything, so I'll just say this:
The pig is a bit much. Moving on.
The pre-desert mission was fucking awesome, made awesome-er by the fact that I saved over my in-the-book save while in the mission, so it was either win or... or I don't know what happens when you fail a mission. I ended up...Spoiler:
exclusively using my 'north path' team - Ted the scout, Catherine the sniper, Ramsey the 'neer and Largo. It was all going swimmingly until the Med Tank showed up. Largo barely scratched it, so I knew I'd have to flank - which meant 4 turns worth of moving he and Ramsey south to the path that overlooked the enemy camp, and finally around to the tank's rear. Meantime, the fucking named soldier appears and tears Ted and Catherine a new one.
I love Ted and Catherine O'Hara so I reload and have them both retreat down the path, with Ted ready to pop off some intercept fire should that fucker get too close. On the next turn, he follows them down the path, but he doesn't have enough AP to get close enough for an attack - perfect! Next turn, Catherine puts him down with a single well-placed bullet. Meanwhile, Largo and Ramsey take out the anti-tank gun mounted on the cliff, and work their way around - Ramsey dropping her grenades on the scout and shock troopers guarding the final base, clearing the way for Largo.
Finally I get behind that goddamned Monster Tank (it's only a med!), and a single shot to the rad takes it down.
So much love for this game. I know I totally fucked that mission right up (got a B ranking though!), but it was an intense fight once I realized I could never reload and start it fresh if I wanted to.
So yeah, apart from the bacon it tastes pretty sweet.
Yes, the pig is indeed a bit... "Japanese"... :| But it isn't too annoying...
What I find most excellent is that the battles are really varied and intense.
The first one is a simple introduction to the game... And you start thinking "my tank is invincible!"... But the later battles will make you rethink that...
The one with the bridge can hit you really hard if you're not careful...
The one in the woods is full of surprises....
And the desert one isn't that conventional either...
If they manage to pull this off with every battle, then that would be very nice
And I was so happy when I could research the "Ammo +1" thingy for my tank so that I could fire two mortar shells in one turn... Boom Boom BOOM!
I like how I first thought : "my tank is my weapon of choice"; it later became a bit of a burden (it's so slow, it costs two CP, it's really an inaccurate shot), and now it's "I need something to hide my troops behind", effectively learning you to work together as a team. The tank-trooper synergy is really nice in this game
Current favourites : Alicia (such a good scout and shot!), Rosie (I like the fact that she isn't phased by incoming fire), Jane (my sadistic stormtrooper), and Marina, my Lone Wolf sniper. Vyse and Aika (from Skies of Arcadia) are pretty good too...
