From those vids, Sonic 2k6 actually looks pretty good
To the game's credit, there are a handful of levels that are totally awesome.

There are just far more that are utter dogshit.
Probably any level not involving Sonic.
The level where you chase a train as Sonic is fantastic. My favourite moment in Sonic2006.

Also, if this game doesn't come to the 360 I'll be incredibly annoyed.

With all this hubbub about it here, I might as well ask. Is sonic rush teh awesome? I loved the gamegear/genesis sonics, I've downloaded 1-3 on my wii questioning how much enjoyment I would get out of them due to the complexity of videogames evolving and found I loved the games just as much if not more than as a kid. If sonic rush holds up against 1-3, I'd buy it.

To be honest, even the levels where you don't play as Sonic were fun. Shadow's car parts were absolutely ridiculous, but the car controlled alright, and otherwise Shadow was just like Sonic. In fact, I thought Silver's levels were really fun, his whole telepathy thing was actually very intuitive.

Really, to tell the truth, and people are going to majorly disagree with me on this, I thought that on a whole Sonic 2k6 was a much better game than SatSR (if you skipped the cutscenes). Neither of them are great (or good, even) games, as both of them had enormous flaws, but I just honestly had more fun playing Sonic 2k6 than I did with SatSR. Now, storyline and cutscene wise I'd significantly prefer SatSR, but that's obvious. I just thought that the gameplay in Sonic 2k6 wasn't bad, and was primarily seen as such because it has random fluctuations in difficulty. Also, the loading screens and times were absolutely freakin' ridiculous.

I thought Silver's first level was okay, but in all honesty I couldn't finish his second level (I got stuck and had no idea what to do) and on Shadow's second level it switched control over to Rogue the bat so I put the game away forever, never to be seen again.

I also personally preferred SatSR (as I'm sure most did), but I didn't think Sonic2006 was as horrible as everyone said it was. If the load times weren't so bad, and the story wasn't so horrible, I probably would put it on par with SatSR.

I liked it a lot, and I've been playing Sonic since Sonic 2. My opinion isn't really the law around here like TSR's is or something, but I'd say give it a shot. As I said a few pages back the levels are a bit obsessed with Bottomless pits and the boss' sometimes have unfair one-hit kill moves but it's definitely worth a play. Apparently Sonic Rush Adventure works out some of Rush's flaws, but I haven't played that yet. Just something to think about.

Rush Adventure does feel like it has more polished levels and smoother gameplay than the first, so I'd definitely reccomend it.

Speaking of Rush and game engines, I'd like to point out that in the wonderous Sonic Programming thread, TSR showed us that in the Genesis Sonic games, you jump perpendicularly to the ground you're standing on, so standing still on a slope and jumping actually propella you backwards. In Rush, this is not the case. Standing on a slope and jumping just moves you straight up. I wonder how this difference would translate to a full 3d game like this?

Anyone know who the rapper who raps all of Knuckles songs in the SA games is?

Because personally, "My names is knuckles, unlike Sonic I don't chuckle" is a lyric I'll carry with me for the rest of my life.

The only reason I posted this in this thread is because now that we're talking about the game, it seems that it's open to be de-railed again, and I really want to talk about how great the music got once they added lyrics that attempted to talk about the charecters.

Oh, no. Sonic is a bit silly, and the writers they have now definitely know it-- on both books. StH is still a bit more dramatic, but both have their tongue-in-cheek moments.

Regarding Sonic '06, my biggest fault was in how limp and loose Sonic felt to control. I think if I shouted commands to him, it might've been more effective.

Man all this talk of 2k6 is making me want to pick it up just to see how bad it is.

It is only like 15$ too..

Also TSR is right City levels are always awesome in Sonic games. The best Sonic game ever would just be a collection of levels that take place in a city.

City Escape with that awesome song is my favorite Sonic level of them all.
I played the shit out of it. I could literally beat it with my eyes closed.

I have it sitting on my shelf, still shrink-wrapped, from christmas. I'm really tempted to crack it open and see what's wrong with it.

I know this is a minority opinion, but I really wish Sonic would stay 3D but lose the rails design. Give me a big open world. I'm thinking Shadow of Colossus big with some loops and shit here and there.

This is exactly what SA and SA2 tried to provide and it doesn't work too well. If there are random loops scattered around then there is usually no reason to run through them and if they must be taken then it's like, oh hey, I'm forced to use this loop just because they like loops so much. Most Sonic level features only work well in the context of a long 2D path.

I downloaded the Sonic 2K6 demo again to try it out and promptly deleted it. It was almost impossible for me to get Sonic to do what I wanted him to do.

See, but there's no reason to use the hawk to fly around in SotC. You do it because damn is it awesome. I'd imagine that would also be why you would want to run through a loop.

I dunno, obviously Sega didn't do too great of a job pulling off an open-world Sonic, but in my head I can't figure out why it couldn't theoretically work.

It probably wouldn't work for the same reason that most racing games wouldn't work in a wide open game world. Having to look to see where you need to go will cause you to hit something. Having a closed world prevents this. In sonic games, you almost always know you need to go forward.

You can grab a hawk by its talons and it'll fly you around, yes.

I don't think you can steer it though.

Carnival Night Zone? That thing sucked.

I think it's okay. It's not great, but it is also not bad. It's good. Little annoying at times, the giant bottomless pits that stretch across the entire bottom screen can piss off, but it's good.

It would work but you would have to do something radically different then conventional Sonic games. I doubt you will ever see a Sonic game like this because of that.

It does make you wonder though. If Sonic can run like faster then sound why does he dick around on all these floating platforms and shit at all? Why not just run around the stage and go straight to Robotnik or whatever.

I think a SotC-style Sonic game would be awesome. Just replace the collossi with giant robots from Robotnik and there you go.

My curiosity was piqued by all the talk of the Sonic comics, so I went ahead and picked up the last couple of issues. I enjoyed the art and the writing far more than I ever expected to. I'm looking forward to tracking down back issues and catching up.

Issue #186 Spoiler:
Spoiler:

Regarding Sonic Unleashed, it's kind of a bummer that we won't be getting any new media for a while since this was an actual accidental leak and SEGA seems to have clamped down. Between Brawl and the leaked Unleashed trailer, it has fostered a ton of goodwill towards the franchise (at least for me personally.) I haven't felt this much love since Sonic and Knuckles.
