[GOG] Good Games, Cheap Prices, No DRM. Independence War Deluxe!

GOG IS DEAD

What was GOG?
GOG stood for Good Old Games. It was run by the guys who made The Witcher (CD Projekt) and basically it was every PC game that has ever been awesome, plus a few that weren't awesome, online. Digitally distributed. For cheap. With no DRM. Fixed to work in XP and Vista. And they came with extras, like manuals and forum avatars and soundtracks and booze.*

Horrible JPEG Compression Care of my Copy of MSPaint

What?!
Remember Fallout and Fallout 2? What about MDK? Or Sacrifice? Giants: Citizen Kabuto? Hostile Waters? Soldiers: Heroes of World War II? Operation Flashpoint? Descent? If you haven't heard of some of these, then you're out of luck, because now you don't have a chance to discover them for the low, low price of less than $10. GOG made it easy unless their credit card payment things screwed up which it had a tendency to do. PayPal apparently worked fine though.

*No booze.

I was going to say this sounded like Gametap until you said it was DRM free.

Now I'm VERY interested. You really ought to put "DRM free" in the title.

I had to get rid of Operation: Flashpoint but seeing as OFP2 info is coming tomorrow or something I figured nobody would really mind.

Wait, this is by CD Projekt?

First Stardock with Impulse, now this. The more indie companies really do seem to get the point and want to make their fans happy.

What's wrong with this forum? There should be more excitement here.

    I blame the thread title.

    Grim Fandango.. Grim Fandango (pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease)

I'm always interested in a good resource for older games (legal, of course) that will actually work fine on XP. I've got some weird problem with mine that crashes out with some kind of 16-bit error or whatever (I'll need to induce it again to get the full error message) whenever I try to run something a bit older.

Basically the fewer hoops I have to jump through to sate my nostalgia, the more likely I am to take it up.

    So.

    Giants in the title.

This is refering to Giants: Citizen Kabuto, yes?

This is great in every way.

Really, you should change the title so theres "OH GOD YES ALL MY COCKS MAN THIS IS SUPER COOL" is somewhere in there.

Ive never been able to get my old copy of fallout 2 working correctly, so excitement.

Why is GOG.com the best place for Good Old Games?

    1. We’ve got games your 10-year-old won’t be better at.

The press release says they only have Interplay and Codemasters right now. I'd really like to know who they're talking to, but I guess we'll learn more between now and September.

I'm surprised it's taken so long for this service to get going. As more people migrate to Vista, the market for money in exchange for compatibility will increase dramatically. Even XP can be as it is.

It kind of reminds me of the story about Valve shopping around to big names asking them to create a service like Steam that they could use. They just decided to do it themselves. Valve and the other digital distribution services haven't pushed old games hard enough, and now CD Projekt has moved in.

What's really great is there is no additional client to install. And the price is low enough that there's no need to bother with a torrent for unavailable stuff.

    Man Descent and Freespace.

I would buy a new good joystick just for those two games.

Well, I suppose Freespace is already available through the SCP, but I want one or two more space combat games to come out before I get myself a joystick again. There just isn't much out there to use one with.

I'm sure I've still got my original Descent floppies, but there's no way I'd be able to get it to run. I would buy that in an instant if they could guarantee a copy that worked on XP.

Hahaha, floppies. I think I've still got my Monkey Island floppies around somewhere. Goodness knows how I'd use them without a drive for them.

    Actually there's a thought.

    LucasArts! Adventure games! NOW!

I just bought one recently to play all the old classics that I missed because I didn't want to buy a joystick. :) TIE Fighter, Descent, IL-2, Falcon 4.0, Enemy Engaged, Freespace, etc.

There's a couple of games that look interesting. One of them is Dark Horizon, which is going to be a space combat game.

The other is Northstar which is going to be more of a Privateer style space RPG.
