Did you see a problem with Bush's stimulus checks?
Two things:

(1) Meant to stimulate the economy, when it was pretty obvious that it wouldn't do much at all

(2) No concrete source for all that goddamn money

Obama's plan is less about economic stimulation and more about relief meant to offset high gas prices.

It has a concrete source

It is therefore (a) honest, (b) fully funded

I.e., doesn't carry the same problems of Bush's rebate.

Trying to find on the Obama website:

1) When the checks will go out?

and

2) When the windfall profits tax will be enacted, and how long it will take to pay for the $1000 checks to every family? Are we just going to expect a few hundred million/few billion dollar check at the end of this year?

These two questions don't even deal with the fact that basically its just a plan to subsidize oil companies, by giving Americans $1000 to sink back into what would inevitably be, higher gas prices.

Even if it can fund itself through this windfall profits tax, which is specious at best, how is this any different than writing government checks to artificially prop up a declining economy? Where's the long term solvency in this idea?

The winning side does not need to make reference to the losing side. McDonald's commercials never reference other fast-food chains, never talk about how "those other guys" make shitty burgers, they just say "McDonald's is happy fun times for everyone!" They don't even really talk about their shitty product. That's good marketing.
This is exactly what I was going to say. You never see Coke doing Coke/Pepsi taste tests.
I'll never understand why Coke's got this wierd monopoly over about a quarter of the US.

I was in the northern VA/DC area last summer, and it was quite literally impossible to find anything that wasn't coke.

Dude the first I heard about it is the CNN article that you posted. I have no fucking idea and I don't know if it's even been determined but it's kind of irrelevant, isn't it? Congress could enact the rebates and we could have 'em in a couple months.

I highly doubt that they'd be equivalent.

Let's assume that the average american drives 30 miles a day (I can't remember what the actual average is but I know it's way less than this). Let's also assume an average mileage of 15mpg (again, an extremely conservative estimate).

there are 95 days to the election.

That would mean that the average american is going to use 190 gallons of gas from now to the election. For gas prices to cost the average american an extra $1,000 in that time, prices would have to rise by $5.26. I don't really see $9/gallon gas as too likely. Do you?

It's not about long-term solvency. Obama already has a comprehensive energy plan for that. This is about helping out people who are pissed off and broke because a piss-poor administration and a socially irresponsible industry have been acting recklessly.

Except it's going to end up costing more in the long run. Hemoraging money isn't the way to fix the economy.
