Being able to get past the naked spinning teenagers is a pretty fundamental skill if you are going to watch much stuff with magic girls.
A's was good, I enjoyed it, but this was the first magic girl show I'd seen so it sorta came out of no where.
A's took place six months after the first series and both Nanoha and Fate were 9 then, so they weren't even teenagers at the time That makes it a good deal worse if you were squicked by it.

I think the writers noticed the amount of attention that the naked spinning lolis were getting from a certain demographic and toned it down a lot in StrikerS. Everyone basically got one full transformation sequence, and after that they were instantaneous. Subaru and Teana weren't young enough for things to be creepy, Caro's sequence had maybe one second of nudity and it wasn't sexualized like Fate's was (speaking of Fate, hers is really similar to the previous series), and Erio didn't have to deal with his clothing disappearing

Garbage might be a little strong, but there isn't any aspect of it that couldn't be improved.

aside from the costumes.
It could be Card Captor Sakura. And everything would be fixed.

I'd be curious to know your reasoning for labeling it terrible.
Me? I haven't technically watched cardcaptors. I might have seen one episode of it.

CCS's art and animiation aren't really all that hot. The fights are fairly uninspired and repetive. The cut a lot of corners like mixing in stock animation with the costume of the week. Even in CCS, that's not something they added to gain time in Cardcaptors or anything. Pretty sure they frequently re-used animation from the episode before.

uhh... I don't remember being horribly impressed by the music. The characters and plot are like clamp trying to do a children's magic girl manga, for crying out loud. Right down to major villains being close friends and all that. A lot of the inter-character stuff is fairly odd, and not all that much is particularly compelling. Tomoyo? wtf?

It could be better, in a lot of ways. I didn't label it terrible, but there isn't really anything about it that is outstanding. No real reason for someone to push themselves to watch it, if they have something against the target demographic or genre.
Aside from disagreeing with your points, I guess it's mostly a matter of your three categories for quality boiling down to 'Terrible', 'Not terrible, but...', and 'Pinnacle of animation'.

I imagine your breakdown of something like Azumanga Daioh would be...

"Its art and animiation aren't really all that hot. The fights are fairly uninspired and repetive.

uhh... I don't remember being horribly impressed by the music. A lot of the inter-character stuff is fairly odd, and not all that much is particularly compelling. Kaorin? wtf?

It could be better, in a lot of ways. I didn't label it terrible, but there isn't really anything about it that is outstanding. No real reason for someone to push themselves to watch it, if they have something against the target demographic or genre."

---

The outstanding part is its being cute and innocent and adorable. The main characters do that on their own, but it really comes through in the relationships (aside from the jackass Yukito).

No seriously, what are you doing here Frosteey.

There is nothing redeemable about Card Captors, and right now I am very tempted to say that you have bad taste but I won't commit yet because I think this is all just a clever ruse on your part.

Nanoha is a spinoff of a series of H-games, so I think they did notice and intended for the transformation scenes to get that kind of attention.

Never watched Cardcaptor Sakura, but I love anyway simply because it ties in with xxxholic and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. I'm not sure about the animation, but the manga has always been top-quality (even if it's a little slow-moving).

Have you considered that Clamp might just not be for you? Or, at least, the cute end of the Clamp spectrum.

Maybe, but I think they changed their mind as the series went on. Besides that, I'm pretty sure that the characters taken from TH3 have little to do with the H-game other than character design and a few shout outs like the injuries Nanoha's dad has.

I have mixed feelings about Bakuman.

On the one hand, I'm digging the manga-writing angle. On the other hand, those two are extremely unreliable narrators so I have no idea whether they are depicting the manga publishing business accurately or not. Not to mention that they are such incredible assholes; both of them. Sexist, arrogant fuckers. I have difficulty relating to them.

I can't keep myself from cracking up at the 'running away' exchange in the middle of that.

Yeah, the girls are not "featured" in the game, from what I have read. And clearly they took the show in a more mainstream direction after it became popular. Still, it does explain why the first season's transformations are so much more... revealing.

Also, Toonami introduced me to mecha shows in general. Back in 03 with the giant robot marathon.

Pretty sure most of the people in this thread who are 20-something were introduced to their animes (when they knew it was anime) on Toonami.

Requesting Youtube video of Tom saying "Bang".

Macross F 24 was a pleasant surprise.

The explosion was rather ominous, though, despite what I've heard otherwise.

Oh god I think I still have a VHS tape of Sailor Moon when it was on Aggro's Cartoon Connection . Wasn't Tekkaman on Cheese TV? I don't remember Astroboy or Voltron but I do remember Samurai Pizza Cats and DBZ. And Pokemon.

SBS had a lot to do with it too, when they use to show Patlabor, Akira and Ghost in the Shell on TV.

With the exception of Gundam Wing I never actually paid attention to the shows on there. I didn't even know toonami was still around, I thought they canceled it a year ago. Wasn't it playing Teen Titans at one point?

Still, it's remarkable to see just how sad some people are or claim to be. I have to admit that the 'bang' was a nice touch. Made me want to dig up Bebop and rewatch the ending in English.

Truly the end of an era folks.

If it wasn't for Toonami anime brought to the states wouldn't exist.

God speed Toonami.

EDIT: Toonami also knew how to make some damn good montages of their shows:

What left for ANime on Cartoon Network? Expect [as] to get their collective heads out of their ass? all as does is berate the fanbase as a meme. Toonami was awesome for a lot of other reasons besades the variety of anime. you know, stuff like this:

List of good (yes, these are relative, but I'm just picking out some of the major ones) shows which were on Toonami:

Samurai Jack
The Big O
Dragon Ball/Z/GT
Gundam Wing/SEED/0800/G/SD
Naruto
One Piece
Outlaw Star
Record of Lodoss War
Robotech
Rurouni Kenshin
Voltron
YuYu Hakusho
Batman:TAS/Beyond/Gotham Knights
Various Transformers series
G.I. Joe
Justice League/Unlimited
Megas XLR
Real Adventures of Johnny Quest
Reboot
Superman:TAS
Teen Titans
Thundercats

And pretty much every movie associated with the above series. And that only covers ~half of the shows which were aired, with others (Tenchi, PPG, Ronin Warriors, Sailor Moon) not necessarily fitting our general demographics/tastes, but still being decent shows in their own rights.

[as] owes its existence to Toonami, started becoming the drop zone for the better shows instead of Toonami, and has been in decline in its own right now. Sad, really.

Toonami, I salute you. You were a staple of my Middle/High School years.

Hell, they were a staple of my grade school years.

I remember watching the first episode of Dragon Ball Z back during third grade and having my jaw slam into the fucking floor.

It really was the show that put Toonami on the map.
