So I finally got around to making 3 more characters to fill out The Ill-Tempered Squirrels. However, I only set them as stand-ins and not full members so I can't do the band pic yet, but here are some solo shots of the guys.

Spoiler'd for vscroll just cause.

I don't like playing crazy drum songs in a group because I'm afraid they're fun for me (when we played Who Are You, I felt bad because I was picking it as a 'drum song' and not a 'band song').

Anyone got any tips for playing long hammer on sequences, namely trills (I think that's what they're called, just think Highway Star solo)?

I'm doing fine on Expert Guitar, but when it gets to things like that I just seem to completely lose it and fail in a instant. I would try hyperspeed or something, but I haven't got Rock Band 2 (Damn living-in-the-uk-so-i-can't-get-rb2-because-it's-not-out-here *breath* yet-although-hopefully-it-will-be-out-in-november *breath* maybe.)

Thats why each person in the band gets to pick a song and it rotates, be selfish! Pick one you enjoy!

Other than practice? Not really. Those kinds of sections really rely on muscle memory and you won't be very successful at it until you're comfortable with the motions.

Remember to try and keep the lowest note anchored by holding it down. If necessary, strum the first note of each string. And maybe concentrate on playing one fewer note in the string to make it easier to survive.

Are you using the solo buttons? Solo buttons can be helpful but only if you're going to pretty much nail the solo; if you're going to flail at all they will be a huge detriment. Every miss with a solo button is not only missing the note but also strumming during the miss as well so you can fail right quick.

If I'm trying to get through a trill I'm unfamiliar with then I'll just strum every fourth note in it. That way I'm not flailing at buttons, but I'm also hedging against the inevitable misses in the string that I'll encounter. I'll also anchor my finger on the lower note, and generally I'll try to execute the trill with my index and middle fingers -- there's more control and dexterity there.

I'm using a GH3 guitar, so no, no solo buttons. I just wondered if there was any particular technique involved to nail them, ro any helpful tips.

EDIT: Dehumanized, that's helpful, thanks for that.

This I find essential. On really fast complicated HOPO strings, you're going to miss eventually. Throw in a strum every few notes to get you back on track. I do it nearly by habit now. If you wait until your brain registers the fact that you've missed, 6 or 8 notes can go by before you strum.

This depends on your hands really. The Boston pack loves throwing in all these little 4 note up-down trills that go like.. RYRG or BOBY, really quickly. I'm way better at hitting them with my middle-through-pinky fingers than I am with index-through-ring. Don't know why.

Yeah, I tend to do those RYRG strings by middle ring middle index. I could definitely see people having an easier time on ring pinky ring middle.

Basically though, it helps a lot to find which way you're best at doing that, then shift your hand position so that it's what you use when you do those sorts of passages. You don't have to learn quite as much into your muscle memory that way. I could spend time getting good at trilling from index-middle, middle-ring, ring-pinky, or just get really good at index-middle trills and apply that whenever a long two-note trill comes by.

I usually just strum complicated HOPO sections until I've got the finger motions down.

When I first come across a trill I don't naturally know the beat to, I go into an alt-strum, Up for the leftmost note, down for the right most note.

I do this for the first 8-10 notes, until I stop strumming and let me fingers do their work. In my head, I'm counting, 1 2 1 2 1 2, but I'm saying 1 with a lot of emphasis and hardly counting 2.

It sounds dumb, but I also typically move my jaw left and right to count trills. I don't recommend it, its just something I've done since I was little.

I bought the mad-catz bass yesterday. It feels good with the thumb rest right by the strum bars.

I usually just sing, but I've been playing this non-stop for the last couple days. It's really easy to get into the rhythm on the fast parts just tapping your two fingers down one after another in quick succession.

We'll see how she holds up.

Trilling with your (my) pinky is pretty much impossible, heh. I bet my middle finger can tap at least twice as quickly as my pinky... I always move my hand up as far as is realistic without screwing myself up too much. For fast trills (like the Eminence Front intro speed) I'll always use my index/middle fingers.

Depends both on the length of the trill and how 'into the groove' I am based on how long the current session is at the moment as to how good I am using my pinky for trickier stuff. Otherwise, I'll usually learn to shift my hand for a more optimal setup. On some songs, my hand is moving around quite a bit.

Sweet girl's school stuff and
A country smile and charm
Out in the back
Of my '58 Chevy
She said she'd do me no harm

You know she makes me feel good
Just like a bad girl should

She goes down
She goes down
She goes down
Down, down, down

Sassy little lassie
Walking right past me
Down in Tennessee
Always a lady
I love Southern ladies
They just know how to please

It's like connecting the dots
Start at the bottom, lick it to the top She goes down
She goes down

Down, down, down

All of the day
All of the night
Lick those lips
Do you up right
Up and down
Round and round
Round the world
Scream it out

You know she makes me feel good

Flat on my back she goes down
For backstage pass, she goes down
With all of my friends, she goes down
She gives heart attack, she goes...

She goes down
She goes down
She goes down

Well, what did you expect from a band headed by a dude whose most famous accomplishment is having sex on camera?

He also did the chicken dance thereby ruining his tiny shred of metal cred.
