Hang your head and cry
For you've killed poor Laurie Foster and you know you're bound to die

It's time I made a thread that lived up to my name.

This is about old timey music. I listen to a lot of it, and I play a great deal more.

For some people,

It's a Little Too Heavy

But that's because they are pussies.

Do you love real country the way I do? Are you as pissed off as I am that people associate the name "Toby Keith" with the phrase "Country Music?"

ITT we bitch about how our time has passed and how worthless young'uns have co-opted our beautiful musics.

ps I would post myself singing a song but I can't get my webcam working.

edit: even if Druhim is the only one that gets this it will be worth it.

    Ummm, well

I never really listened to punk music, but I still get angry anytime some douchebag fourteen year old emo faggot who lives in the suburbs and wears girl jeans and dyes his hair black claims bands like Green Day or Blink-182 are "punk" bands.

If you aren't young and homeless and starving and regularly dodging beatings from cops then odds are your music isn't punk music.

    Country has a twang.

Country actually grew from folk, which was originally a term for contemporary artists doing 'old timey' or traditional style music.

    I'm not totally sure

I feel like it's a difference involving guitar styles (country seems to frequently have steel guitars and banjos), song subjects, and that vocal twang might be part of it too

Hank Williams Sr. was fucking incredible, and an amazing song writer, despite his lack of you know, a good singing voice.

His sons had a lot to live up to and they haven't quite done it.

yeah, it's totally a stylistic difference

there's country that's just a soft-spoken guy and a guitar, and there's folk with banjos and steels and electrics

though I think the modern definitions of "Country" generally refer to what is technically Country Rock, where modern Folk (or anti-folk or whatever subgenre) takes from the roots of both Folk and original Country

according to Wikipedia, Regina Spektor and Ben Folds both inhabit a genre known as anti-folk

anti-folk is just a stupid name they came up with instead of calling it alternative folk or some other designation meaning slightly experimental folk music

it's like 'Trip-Hop' in that it isn't really a genre but an arbitrary designation of folk musicians that do things a little differently

and like trip-hop, it's a term frequently rejected by the artists that are supposed to define the genre

    it's pushing it, but
Flogging Molly was the first band I really stopped caring about once they got popular. It was probably seeing their shirts in a Hot Topic window display that did it.

Still love Swagger a ton though

You don't have to be a broke ass deadend kid to be a punker these days, although I know a couple dudes who really are homeless and also punk as a motherfuck.

But in all seriousness, old Green Day stuff was close to punk (pop-punk), but man, have you heard the modern shit that people try to pass off as punk these days? Like those assbags who tried to cover Astro Zombies, My Chemical Romance. So much vocal correction and duplication work in the recording its like ramming a re-bar into my ear canal instead of a toothpick.

Or maybe its just that compared to the modern shit, Green Day actually seems comparatively punk.

Holy fuck is this what it feels like to get old.

Did I mention I spoke with Pete Seeger over the phone once?

He said not to worry because shit doesn't look nearly as bad now as it did in the thirties. Take that for what it's worth, I suppose. This was before the housing market collapsed.

I'm pretty good friends with The Riders in the Sky (casual name drop) and my dad used to play with Jethro Burns of Homer and Jethro fame, so I've always had a fondness for good ol' country western music.

Bluegrass and country is good stuff. I figured Mr. Monroe would be the one to post something like this eventually.
