What can you make with $500 and "no money, no time, no crew, no script"?

That was amazing. The only thing i didn't like was the way they delivered their lines. I know they're amateurs, but i could barely make out some of the lines because of the mumbling. I hope they are planning to do more of them though, as the acting will get better, and everything else is already brilliant.

Of course when they say "$500" they aren't including the wiz with 3D/editing software. That doesn't lessen how awesome it is but it's clear that someone is good at what they do and worth more than $500.

I'm assuming the $500 does not include hardware/equipment. I'm betting they owned a ton of the stuff they used already, because frankly $500 is barely enough to buy a camera, much less the software, etc.

That's still awesome stuff. These guys really know what they're doing with post-production.

At work so I'm watching it later, but from the reactions, it amazes me what people can do without a huge studio backing them, and how so much bad stuff can come from studios which should have so much more money to do so much better..

I remember when Ryan vs. Dorkman came out and the choreography and lightsaber effects were just amazing for two guys working on it. Though this seems to be in a whole different class.

The only thing that is a little off to me is the lighting on the cg models. Like they are a tad too bright. Otherwise, I showed my wife and she said wow, which is about the best compliment you could get from her. The fact that she's never played HL2 means they did a damn good job.

Aren't they just compositing the in-game assets onto a broadly dull trainyard live shot?

I mean it's not cakewalk but it's not like scratch built CGI over here.

I saw this earlier on Gizmodo, and I'm super impressed.

I would hate to see a Half-Life movie if it involved Gordon Freeman in any way, but this was pretty cool. Maybe just more in the series would be neat, nothing too big needs to be done.

This really reminds me of those Halo movie shorts, which is a good thing. I just loved how the CG was so nicely integrated into the live-action stuff, and this looks to be doing the same thing (although the zombies look a bit cuddly rather than evil and menacing). Hopefully the acting gets better. I look forward to more!

Yeah, that was the first association my brain made as well.

This is in fact better, because it doesn't rely as much on shakeycam. Still has some shakes but it's nowhere near as bad as the camera-on-a-washboard effect the Halo stuff had.

Who made Halo movie shorts? I only ever saw the commercials for Halo 3 and the short films directed by Neill Blomkamp (who was supposed to direct the movie). Check out Alive in Joburg for a good example of his work.

Can't wait to get home to check this out. Don't have/can't install QT here at work :\

Blomkampps style is very faux documentry.
He also breaks the 4th wall in just about everything he does.

So clicking the about info for the purchase brothers shows they affiliated with Sons & Daughters which is a production company and directors collective (Crush) here in Toronto.

I wonder if i could get in contact with them. Their short looked great- but they could use some compositing help.

That was my thinking as soon as i saw the special effects i was like "Ok these are better than a lot of TV shows ive seen, someone who is worth a hell of a lot more than $500 is working for free on this one."

Still though, wow. That was pretty impressive.

    Huh. Wow.

Seeing stuff like this heavily reinforces my opinion that Hollywood needs to die already. Once that happens, maybe people who actually know how to make interesting movies without needing multi-hundred-million dollar budgets can get some attention.

This short film implemented CG a lot better than many a modern film. How about we take all the funding away from the kind of morons that make utter garbage like "Hotel for Dogs" and give it to guys like this? Think of what these guys could do with a real budget.

My thought was how come Uwe Bolle gets money to make movies like, all the time, that are total shit garbage trash, and guys like this with real talent dont get any funding, and can obviously pump out something 100 times more compelling and exciting. The film world baffles me.

Just like in the fine arts world, it's not how good you are or what you have to say. More often than not it's who you know, who you've been buddy buddy with, and how good you are at chatting up prospective clients. We all know Hollywood is just a circle jerk party for self congratulatory hacks that cling onto the rest with actual talent.

I think these "real budgets" are what get people into trouble. It seems like when people have to make do with limited resources they get really resourceful and creative and produce much better results.
