I would use a fountain pen except carbon paper will not transfer the writing from one. (Or maybe I am using them wrong; my script is pretty light to begin with.) Whenever I try to press down with them I end up tearing the paper.

I use a W H Smith 99p fountain pen. It's chunky enough to fit my hand, and when I inevitably lose it it won't cost that much to replace.

A friend of mine spent in excess of £250 on a fountain pen

It struck me as slightly absurd

My handwriting is atrocious

granted I am taking steps to improve it

but at the moment, writing with a fountain pen for me would just be polishing a turd

This depends: most fountain pens will not be suitable for writing on carbon paper unless it has a very stiff nib. My Parker 51 writes on such papers fine (though I don't even have to do that very often anyway) You shouldn't have to press very hard with a fountain pen; if you do you need to adjust the ink flow or maybe think about whether you're writing correctly.

Yea they can get pretty goddamn expensive for the rarer stuff, these things are pretty much antiques.

However if you just want a general one that's pretty awesome overall you can probably grab a simple Parker 51 on ebay for <100 USD.

My cousin used to work in a place that sold ridiculous pens, and was always astonished when someone bought an expensive one, since most of them had identical nibs to ones for a tenth of the cost

Also they are goddamn awesome for drawing my goal is to become as awesome as this:

Yes I know most inkers use their dip pens and such but look at that

Also fountain pens can have awesome watercolour effects when using the appropriate ink.

I have a space pen. It writes pretty nice, and it's small. Easy to fit into a shirt pocket or whatever.

My parents got me a Mont Blanc ball point pen when I graduated law school. I've used it once.

So that you can get shot by police officers who mistake it for a real knife and your twirling for aggressive action. That said, real butterfly knives are awesome though.

Montblanc. Bleah. I never liked them, too many fakes out on the market to reliably tell which ones are real and not. Then again, the company itself has had a history of questionable practices, so I guess it's rather fitting.

Which is a shame, I liked their engravings on the nibs, they looked pretty cool.

I've got two Cross pens of the same make. One is a dark blue, the other a dark green.

I don't think that they are made anymore as they aren't on the cross website.

Twist mechanism and ball point. As a lefty I can't use a fountain pen if I want anything I write to be legible.
