So me and my fellow students are planning a trip, and since we all saw various bits of europe at one time or another, we decided to set our sights on someplace none of us have ever been: NYC.
We'll be going there from march 9 -15th.
And our coed group is made up of college seniors (aged 21-24), mastering in Graphic design. Our dep't has various majors (advertising, graphic design, illustration and webdesign). People from all majors are travelling, but i'm also supposed to be on the look-out for activities specifically for illustrators.
So H/A'ers that have already bitten the big apple, i'd really appreciate any info on:
-tourist traps that are actually worth a visit
-art galleries in general (big or small, we love 'em all,)
-galleries for contempory art or design
-ilustration galleries
-specialist bookstores (childrens' or comics)
-a huge/interesting art supply store
-all things awesome you saw there,
-favourite spots to visit/ eat/shop/ relax
-is it possible to visit any art schools there? are there any majoring in illustration there?
I presume the subway is the best method to travel throughout the city? do they have week-passes? or week-passes for public transportation in general?
any other things i should know about NYC?
I already searched for some previous threads, which i found, but if anyone wants to chime in with some updated info, or some other cool spots, i'd greatly appreciate it!

Art Supply stores? Go to Pearl Paint on Canal street. It's like 6 floors of art supplies. There's an entire floor devoted solely to PAPER. It's amazing.
Hit the big museums in Manhattan, sure, but try if you can to maybe also see the Brooklyn Art Museum. If anybody is mad into anatomy, you might swing by the south street seaport for the Bodies exhibition.
Maybe find Union Square after dark, if you like people watching. Say Hi to the statue of Ghandi there- he's my favorite.
Also around that area off of 14th street is Forbidden Planet (comic books), and the Strand (all sorts of books), both well worth checking out.
-Obviously the Met. You could spend a few days here.
-Obviously Central Park, right near the met.
-Moma is worth checking out, but theres a lot of really really modern art in there, I don't know if your into that, I'm not so much.
-Every Thursday night in Chelsea (around east 20th street in the East Village) there are a lot of gallery openings, free alchohol sometimes, but it's fun to just go around to the different galleries. I'm actually heading over to the Johnathan Levine gallery now (Blek le Rat and Doze Green are opening), they have a website I'll post when I get back, before you come you can check to see if anythings going on. It's a good destination because it's a big building with different galleries on different floors so you can see more than one opening or artist at one place.
Now that I think about it, where are you staying? That'll let me know whats within walking distance and I can tell you whats around there. I'll check back here again later with more reccomendations.
After the Chelsea openings are over I like to hit up the basement of a bar called Niagra, in the east village, where the Antagonist Art movement has underground shows.
Oldsak and Chop:
thanx a lot for this tip, it sounds pretty cool and right up our alley...
As to where we're staying, i don't know yet. Someone else is responsible for the booking, and i don't know if they'll just book a hotel as part of an arrangement or try to book something themselves..
Does the new school have like, an exhibition room? (it is an art college, right?)
