I Need a New Wallet

QuidQuid Definitely not a bananaRegistered User regular
edited December 2009 in Help / Advice Forum
I've been rocking a duct tape wallet for more than half a decade now but, quite frankly, it's time to get something a bit more adult. I've browsed the local stores but haven't really found anything that suits me, so I was hoping for some suggestions. The only requirement I have is that it not be leather and not be terribly expensive.

Like that sort of more adult?

There was a wallet thread not long ago:
    http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=97248&highlight=Wallet

Various types and the appearance they give are discussed.
Should service all of your buttpurse needs.

I'm still a fan of the wallet I talked about in that thread; the Taxi Wallet
    48483783d.jpg
I've used several different wallets (including the Big Skinny which, while wonderfully thin, broke after a couple years). That above though has been my favorite style.
My dad has used a Taxi Wallet for about 15 years and it's showing some wear, but its not even close to falling apart. These things are built like fucking tanks. They have two inner pockets when you unfold it, one being extra deep. My favorite feature is the front pocket, it holds a fair amount of cards if you need it to.
These run about $50, but again, expect decades of use.

    maybe something like this?.

It's neutral, the logo isn't overblown, and it's cheap. Everything else I can think of as "more grown-up" is leather and around the £40 (erm...$65ish) mark.

I'm gonna sidejack this thread: I need a new wallet too; I'm tired of the velcro skater wallet I have at the moment, and could go for something a little more professional.

I'm thinking leather, not too bulky, but it must have a coin section: In the UK, our paper currency starts at £5, so we tend to handle a lot of change.

    Any suggestions? Preferably affordable ones.

I got a pretty sweet bi-fold wallet from target, payed 20 bucks for it. Thought it would be too bulky but it isn't at all. Its a swiss one.

With acrued ass hours, it flattened nicely, that and the lack of cash I keep in it. All it really has is a credit card, debit card, DL, School ID and some random giftcards. Plenty of space. I can't complain, and looks professional as hell.

I got this bad boy awhile ago and I love it. I think I got it for $20, its got two pockets and enough room for all the cards I carry. Its simple, and almost adult.

That's nice? I asked for more adult suggestions as I'm getting rid of my old duct tape wallet, and even the guy jacking the thread with pretty much the same question wants something more professional.

Edit: And thanks for the suggestions everyone else. Still nothing I'm happy with but it's gotten me to think about what I want and has certainly helped me search.

Seriously, this wallet does not make me think 'adult'.

On the wallet discussion, here is something I never really got: the ubiquitous putting of the wallet in the ass-pocket. Maybe it's just because my wallet is half an inch thick, but I think it's really uncomfortable having something in that pocket; makes me feel lop-sided when I sit down. That and I don't even have a chance of seeing it if someone pickpockets me.

Seriously, Europe needs smaller paper money. When I was traveling there I ultimately gave up trying to keep my coinage in my wallet and just stuffed it into my pockets, and then counted up the large coins once in a while and spent them on something.

In particular, I want to do something painful to whoever is responsible for the existence of the 2-euro-cent coin. Who the hell needs a 2-cent coin??? IT DOESN'T DIVIDE INTO ANYTHING AND IS THE EXACT SAME SIZE AS A PENNY. And you can't use them in vending machines. Chrrriiiiist.

I tried the super thin wallet way of life and when it worked it was nice, but you know what? I really do like to carry a lot of stuff. Library cards, gift cards, I save receipts for budget purposes... Having a wallet that can hold a lot while not bulking out is the best.
Again, I'm going to jerk off to the Taxi Wallet, but because of it's design you have to fucking stuff it was everything before it starts to bulk out. It's kind of boxy in a sense and has an actual support on the z-axis (if any of this makes sense). So while you constantly add and subtract stuff from it, it really feels like the bulk never changes.

I have a wallet from fossil very similar to this one.

    519T5XZdAsL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

The fossil wallets seem sturdy enough and they have some style to them. They can give a more "adult" wallet look without looking like a stuffy guy wallet or an old grandpa wallet.

    http://www.fossil.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryView?langId=-1&storeId=12052&catalogId=10052&categoryId=30015&parent_category_rn=30001&departmentCategoryId=30001&Ns=p_weight%7c0%7c%7cp_order_history%7c1&N=0

edit: though, now that I look again, they have very few non-leather wallets. But the ones they do have seem nice.

edit edit: wait, is this a no leather requirement? or a "mostly not leather" requirement? Because even the fabric ones have a bit of leather on them.

Back when I was doing my wallet hunting, the only non-leather, good looking, and well received wallets I came across were those from Big Skinny
    http://www.bigskinny.net/thin-wallets.html
    and Rogue Wallet
    http://www.roguewallet.com/VeganRogueWallet.html

I had a Big Skinny and it fell apart on me after a few years. I had one of their bi fold super crazy thin ones. They since claimed that they have changed their manufacturing style and also offer a warranty, so ymmv.

Here are some supposedly well made vegan wallets (which seems to be the key phrase to use)

The rogue wallet has the perfect material but can't say I like how it looks.

Skinny looks good overall though. I'll probably grab that until I decide to splurge on one of the nicer ones from the last link which are the absolute best I've seen yet. Thanks a lot.

    Some suggestions:

Dosh wallets seem pretty cool to me - you get some color but most of them have a pretty reserved exterior appearance. They are pricey, though, and I think you have to get them shipped from Australia.

DB Clay makes wallets from some sort of eco-friendly non-leather stuff, and there are some cool-looking designs. The actual site (www.dbclay.com) appears to be down for maintenance right now. These wallets are expensive. I've ordered one, but don't have it yet, and I'll admit to being mildly concerned about the possibility of the print rubbing off.

This aluminum wallet and this stainless steel wallet both look interesting (I prefer the steel one), but again, they are pricey.

One thing you might want to consider is a money clip. The duckbill one that I use can hold plenty of currency, and cards, and it holds it all very securely.

I've had mine for 4 months now and I haven't had any problems with it. I can't even imagine going back to a bulky wallet.

I use a thin, aluminum business card holder for my wallet. It can hold my debit card, credit card, driver's license, bus pass, and then whatever random stuff I need for the day (Edge Card, Library Card, etc.)

My only warning against using steel or aluminum business card holders / wallets is that they are so smooth they have a tendency to go sliding out of my front or back pocket. Just FYI, I've lost my wallet a lot in the last few years.

I still use the damn thing cause it's so sleek and small that you don't feel weighed down.

I have a Dosh Classic wallet that is pretty nice, but it is HUGE. I'm glad Arch Guru linked to their site, because their new designs look much more compact than the classic. I keep my business cards and a tiny USB drive inside the hinged pocket, but I must admit that although the pocket stays latched, the business cards sometimes "leak" out of the side. I've sort of trained myself not to subject it to the forces that cause thin stuff to come out of the latched part, and I don't even think about it anymore.
