More of a hidden thing (in an MMORPG, no less), but one I've heard now and again for Final Fantasy XI:
There's an area called The Last Stand that apparently is unused for any quest or mission but has been sitting on the servers since the Rise of the Zilart expansion, and there has never been a way to actually access it
By using an external viewer to look at the .dat files, the actual area itself is broken up into several unconnected rooms, and uses the same graphics as Horutoro Ruins and Mordion Gaol. Going by dialog tables, it's connected to the original conquest areas, but the most interesting thing is that it's a BCNM area (for those of you who don't play FFXI, this basically means a boss fight) and apparently it's meant to last for six hours(!), and perhaps most interesting of all are the following entries in the dialog tables:
Dialog Table Entry 01145 Hostile forces in the Jeunoan regions have been neutralized!≺Prompt≻
Dialog Table Entry 01146 Hostile forces in the San d'Orian regions have been neutralized!≺Prompt≻
Dialog Table Entry 01147 Hostile forces in the Bastokan regions have been neutralized!≺Prompt≻
Dialog Table Entry 01148 Hostile forces in the Windurstian regions have been neutralized!≺Prompt≻
Dialog Table Entry 01149 Six hours left until planar collapse.≺Prompt≻
Dialog Table Entry 01150 Three hours left until planar collapse.≺Prompt≻
Dialog Table Entry 01151 One hour left until planar collapse.≺Prompt≻
Dialog Table Entry 01152 Thirty minutes left until planar collapse.≺Prompt≻
Dialog Table Entry 01153 You're almost out of time!≺Prompt≻
Dialog Table Entry 01154 The plane is shifting!≺Prompt≻
Dialog Table Entry 01155 All hostile forces have been neutralized!≺Prompt≻
Dialog Table Entry 01156 The plane slowly collapses upon itself...≺Prompt≻
Personally I'm of the opinion that The Last Stand might be a massive apocalyptic event they've got planned for when the FFXI servers finally shut down (especially considering the talk of planar collapse and hostile forces in Jeuno and the home nations), but some just think it's a testing ground for boss fights Square plans to implement in the future
Seems almost like an alternate version of dynamis except for the BCNM nature. Though honestly dynamis is essentialy a realy freakin huge BCNM. Then again it may have been a beta version of besiged and some stuff they had been planning for WoTG.
You know they're updating Onyxia to be a level 80 raid for the next patch? I'm wondering if they're going to try to add in some sort of new storyline or if they're just going to make her stronger.
I hear she's going to deep breath more often.
DOT the crap out of her and she wont deep breath
Stand where the deep breath dosent hit (on the sides of the room from where shes oriented) and it dosent matter how many times she breathes. The insanity behind trying to figure out the mechanics of an attack to prevent it when you can just continually avoid it Bewilders and enrages me everytime I had to do that fight with someone unfamiliar with the strategy that our guild used.
Yeah it the Dot thing never seemed to work because we always seemed to get at least a couple deep breaths. It was just comical when the officers went off because there was not enough DOTs on her. It never seemed to work for me but then again I was always on the wall when she decided to blast the room.
The inane shit that people would try to post as legitimate reasons for deep breaths?
"well if two players are still, and then one crosses the z axis of players y, that signals her to do a deep breath"
"noones allowed to move"
"you can move but only side to side"
"its ok to move when she fireballs"
"its ok to move when she isnt fireballing"
"dps has to stay above 231.8 while shes in the air"
"you have to have x amount of dots"
Basically intermix any combination of bullshit and that was given as a strategy to stop deep breaths given ad hoc.

Also on the krull blade, im guessing you told people it was in the egg pit to get them killed? We did that behind the 3rd to last boss in MC. Theres a giant wall behind the boss, with a hole in it filled with lava oriented going up the wall. We would tell new people that it was a portal/would trigger a cut scene/ easter egg to see the final boss, and that they should go trigger it. So after we kill the boss every so often you would see someone just kind of run up to this hole for no reason and die (it was lava, it killed you), and then lots and lots of laughing on vent and swearing from the victims.
Heh, my guild did the same thing. The rune shaped crack behind Golemagg. "Alright, eveyone who has not been here before: you need to run up into that glowing rune on the wall in order to become attuned for Ragnaros. You will not be able to do the boss otherwise, so we need you all to get this done quickly so we can move on."
On the subject of cut content: its rumored that Schala in Chrono Trigger was supposed to be a playable character at some point. The game's code contains spots for two more characters, and leftovers such as broken party dialogue pointed to Schala as being one of these characters. Other things were cut such as Singing Mountain (the music for this area was included on the song track but the area itself didn't make it into the game) and I believe an area from 2300 AD.
I remember reading something on a walkthrough... when you are storywise ready to fight Lavos, you can talk to the Old Man in the End of Time and he will tell you what other plot points need taking care of (referred to as side quests.) Some could never be resolved due to content either not present in the US release or possibly both.
I wonder if an exploration-based sandbox game would be possible? That is, one with no overarching story and tons of hidden content. DLCs could periodically add new areas and alter pre-existing ones.
Yep. I remember finding it completely by mistake when I was younger.
Never knew about the backwards speak until i saw that though.
Is there a way to finish the game without doing that? I swear the 12 year old me spent so long just wiping out wave after wave of demons but couldn't finish the stage without doing what's depicted in the video.

That's plain not true. All of those sidequests are playable.
The line someone close to one of you may be in danger or what have is a bit ambiguous but is usually believed to be referring to Queen Zeal.
Most of the missing in cart but unaccessible stuff in CT was added to CTDS...and sucks.

Yeah, there was a rising platform on the stage that you need to ride up and then shot rockets into the hole on the demons head.

Normally you just rode this platform up and shot into a small hole in the forehead of this skull thing on the wall. But, in reality your still hitting the head in the vid with splash damage and killing it that way.
So wait, it actually is crucial to beating the final boss and ain't some wierd-ass thing they stuck in there for shits and giggles? Damn, I knew about it, but didn't know that.
No, it's only necessary to beat the boss for people that don't understand the fight. You just rocket the red spot on the mask a few times while dodging constantly respawning mobs.
I was reading an old PC Accelerator magazine, particularly the Messiah preview. They must have cut up a lot of that game because the final product and what's described in the previews don't match up very well.
There have been a bunch of other games where the previews didn't match up to what was released. I'm sure anyone can rattle off one or two.
Man, what was that one M rated game that some developers made but then EA bought them out a month before it was released and cancelled it because at that time EA was trying to be family friendly?
It was like a fully realized game, almost went gold and whooops, not shipping.
In regards to that castle setting for Resident Evil 4 with the ghosts and such, I believe I heard that Capcom did end up using some of that setting (as in the set designs and layout that they had finished) in a game called Haunting Ground (or Demento in some places). Not sure how accurate that is though, and I know the story is nothing similar.
I seem to recall hints that early in development, Silent Hill 1 was to feature a second playable characer who was female (similar to how Resident Evil 1 and 2 worked). This character is typically assumed to have been Cybil.
Also, like Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 2 has a bunch of stuff from pre-release. I think Claire's character was entirely different and named Elza or something. I sadly can't remember too many details right now.
Heck, Devil May Cry had it's share of cut content during it's journey from being Resident Evil 4 to being it's own game. If I remember right, originally the main character was Tony Redgrave, who then became Dante's partner (along with a girl named something like Aisha) and then got removed entirely, save for his name being written on Dante's guns. Several guns were also cut that can be seen in the art book.
In regards to other cut content, wasn't their evidence of a Toad Suit item for Mario 3 to go along with the Hammer Bros. Suit and Frog suit and such? No idea what it would have done.
And then there's Mortal Kombat, where Ed Boon essentially lies about stuff being in the game to get you to pump more quarters into it, only to add the stuff into a later version (ie. Rain being shown on the demo screen for UMK3, but not actually being in the game until MKT). To be fair, it is one of the few series that does actually hide stuff in weird convoluted ways for you to search for, just not as much as Midway would like you to believe.
Does Star Fox 2 or other canceled games fit into this thread? It did introduce 2 new characters to the franchise who permanently disappeared when the game wasn't released. The strange thing is, those two characters were different depending on the stage of development the game was in. Early on it appeared to be Fara Phoenix (from the comic) and someone who looked like Andross, while later on it was a pair of characters named Faye and Miyu.

That picture bugged the hell out of me for so long as a kid when I first found out about beta stuff for Mario RPG, but the absolute worst thing is on the cartridge itself. The demo movie shows you fighting red parakoopas on the beanstalk with just Mario, and that never happens. It's just completely wrong in so many (few) ways.

They cut designed Colossi because they were too repetative, is my understanding. The game is actually a pretty decent length and every colossi you face is slightly different so it's a good thing they didn't fall into the easy design trap of "let's reskin a boss to make the game longer".

Interesting thing about this - one of the episodes of the DMC anime has a guy believing Dante to be his childhood friend Tony...
During the episode, all signs eventually point to Dante really being Tony - his mother using the name to protect him from some demon or other when he was a kid. Shame it resulted in the village they were in being attacked anyway...

Anyone remember Tombi (Sometimes Tomba) for the PS1? It was a cartoony platform/RPG hybrid where you travelled around throwing pigs in magic bags or something. Every time you beat one of the pig bosses, and area was "cured" and you got a nice little animation showing said area being clensed of whatever weird plague was harming it. I found an animation not used in the game of an area I'd never seen being cured, and subsequently spent 2 years looking for it. It wasn't until I was around 15 that I found out that, shit, yeah, stuff gets cut from games. Sucks to be you buddy.

No there actually wasn't all that much on the final cartridge that didn't make it in. Just Singing Mountain, and Battle Song 2. All the new stuff in CTDS was made specifically for it. It doesn't even resemble the cut areas in the pre-release version, though you might be able to make the argument that the arena or something like it was originally intended to be in the snes version due to a colliseum map sprite in 2300 AD in the pre-release.
