I've liked Generation Lost so far, and had no problem with Ice acting the way she has because of what happened to her in Blackest Night, since it would be resolved by the end of the series (hopefully). But an origin that will probably make her more dark than necessary, I'm wary of that. I mean, this is Winick, so even a rape? Add to it the new look she has in that preview (think Iceman from AoA), I get a feeling we're going to have the happy Ice persona be nothing but a cover for her real personality, which would just be a shame.
But how does one character go from pensive, shy flower to elemental badass?
Welp, there goes any interest I might have had in the book.
Doesn't anyone consider actually waiting to READ the story before losing their shit over it? Especially since it's only been described in the vaguest of terms.

I would rather be an angry fanboy about retconning a character's origin that I had forgotten existed at all a year or two ago.

Vaguest of terms would be just saying Ice has a new origin. In that Source article they highlight that she used to be mild mannered, now she's going to be an elemental badass. And that she has a tragic origin that somehow makes her in the present more explosive. And the general rule of thumb is when you're an edgier ice-based character, you get more points and ice on you. How did we know Bobby Drake was more extreme in AoA? He had icicle spikes all over.
Add to it Ice has been kind of a grumpy guss since GL #2, it is fair to see where this has a strong likelihood of going, since this is the same company that grims things up by killing kids and having heroes do drugs and kill people with cats, and have martians kill families and rip their skin off.
Put simply, I like Ice as she has existed prior to GL. I like that she serves as a counterpoint to all the strong heroines that have tragic backstories, and all the badGrrRls of comics.
An attempt to make her more like the plethora of sadsack superheroines, with weepy origins and a chip on their shoulder, denigrates a character I like, and removes a personality type I like from the DCU landscape, in a universe already filled to the brim with tragic badasses. This isn't something new and exciting being done with a character I like. It's just more of the same old shit.
See also: Mia Dearden. People (TLB) give Kevin Smith shit for his comics, but I actually like Quiver (impenetrable as it is) and really, really enjoy Sounds of Violence. Under him, Mia was a really fun, spunky character, with a quasi Elektra Complex for Ollie, due to her sexual history. She clearly had some problems, but was still a fun character, whose outspoken views on sex were often played for laughs. She was a kid who didn't act like a kid, and didn't know how to act like a kid, but was trying to adapt to the lifestyle anyway. I think it was a nice bit of complexity, which may not have even been wholly intentional on Smith's part.
Queue Winick, who inserted more tragedy, and basically removed all the fun from her, turning her into a stereotypical sidekick, whose only role seems to be getting beaten up, taken hostage, and appearing to die in an explosion.
Did anyone pick up Birds of Prey #5 this week? I briefly glanced through it at the store to see what I thought of the new artist. The art actually wasn't that bad. But I just felt like the first arc was so much build up for such a small payoff that I am done with it for now unless I hear some raving reviews.

Generation Lost #10:
They are really pushing the Kingdom Come world as being the future of this DCU.
And I have no idea where the Metal Men fit into the DCU right now. They were rebooted with Infinite Crisis as just appearing in that Superman/Batman arc, and Rouleu's mini, while a beautiful thing to look at, wasn't that strong storywise with the time jumping and so forth.
Winick wrote Ice and Tora's BFF scene to be a bit more heavy handed than "just friends" I thought. This could just be because I'm kind of waiting for what Winick does with Ice to see if it's something new or just a usual Winick hook.
Nice touch with Batman and Power Girl putting pieces together about Max Lord but then getting a mental block in place.
And JLA #49, there's a big plot hole:
If Bogeyman can only enter the minds of kids, why is he in both Donna and Jenny's mind if they are at least 22-23 years old, if not older?
I did like the Dick/Kara interaction at the beginning and end, it was nice.
I skimmed Generation Lost, and between solicitations saying that someone's going to die, Tora telling Bea she doesn't know what she'd do if she died, and Tora's upcoming grim 'n gritty revamp, I think Fire's being positioned to die.
Dammit I need to start reading Blackest Night in chronological order soon (only the main series and GL/GLC tie-ins). I just got so much other shit I need to read as well.

Oh and yes your article is entirely true and right.
Thanks. My favorite thing about writing that was telling Kirk that I couldn't wait for someone to tell me to wait and read the story rather than judge it beforehand, and then having that happen in the fourth comment.

since that is the only other comic other than the trade that collects the trades of the 3 minis
Glo Balls hell no (sno balls are for wussies), flash cakes will be delicious, flash fact.

they should be selling fruit pies
Remember the TMNT fruit pies (they even had a custard pie one)? Those were good comic themed foods.
For some reason the Flash Cakes are labeled as 8 scary cakes.
Halloween promotion + red costume = someone in marketing thinks the Flash is a demon
Some of those Amalgam books were awesome.
