    Dear Sega:

Stop trying so hard. Just give me Sonic 1-2-3 & Knuckles, in HD, with another game's worth of fun new levels that can be traversed differently by the 3 characters Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails. Maybe throw in a new bonus stage or something. If you give me this, I will buy your game.

    Pros:
They claim they're going back to their roots.

    Cons:
They always make that claim, and never deliver.

You can break the cycle by not having your hopes be raised, and expecting disappointment. It's the only way you can come out on top.

I really, really liked Sonic Unleashed's daylight stages, until I got the air boost 'upgrade'.

For those who never played it, Unleashed has Sonic Rush's ring power boost. It's basically a spin dash without the startup.
The upgrade allows you to do the same in the air.

The problem? They made it overlap with the homing attack. So no more mid-air adjustments without the very high risk of falling down a pit. What the hell Sega

    Give Dimps this project.

The entire Sonic Advance & Sonic Rush series has been awesome.

And I truly think that if they had another 6 months to work on it the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed would have been as good as the 360 & PS3 verisons.

PROJECT NEEDLEMOUSE' WEBSITE IS NOT REAL

Been confirmed by Sega employees. REJOYCE!

I don't see this as something to rejoice about.

It's like them saying, "all the rumors that the next game will be 2D and have only Tails and Sonic playable are false! It's also a complete fabrication that there will be no shitty rock music with lyrics!"

The website is fake, not the project.

I know. And it's a huge disappointment that the site's designs will not be used in the new game. They denied a positive thing.

None of those designs really fit the Sonic aesthetic, excetp fot the loop but that one was basicaly ripped from sonic 2.

The designs being fake is good news in my eyes because now there's a chance of some real 2D graphics.

In other Sonic news, PlaySega just yesterday released Sonic Level Creator, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like -- a Sonic game with a level editor.

The graphics and gameplay are Sonic 1 style, i.e. no super spin dash. The engine is a little buggy and not completely accurate, but it's not far off.

The catch is that while you can play other peoples' levels for free, you have to pay a monthly fee to make your own :? Still, pretty awesome.

The big day is finally here. After a week of blog comments, facebook posts, forum threads, and twitter updates, we have arrived at the end of the Needlemouse Character Countdown – and we think many of you are going to be pleased with the results.

First off, some well deserved kudos to all of you out there in the Sonic community! Together, you broke the records for most/fastest comments on any SEGA Blog entry, ever. On Tuesday, you did the same for Facebook statuses. On Wednesday, you guys set a new record for the most amount of users ever logged into our forums. And yesterday, on Twitter, all of us – with some help from Segata Sanshiro – created the biggest push to get SEGA on the trending topics list in history.

What you all have accomplished in these last five days is something you should be proud of. It speaks to the passion that drives many of us who still have so much hope for Sonic, and for the games he stars in.

Today, we are about to break the trend that has continued on for many years. To the thousands of you out there asking for a game where Sonic is the only playable character – rejoice. As of today, your wish has been granted.

    4276408713_b15c435ef1_o.jpg

In Project Needlemouse, there will be no new characters – playable or otherwise. The focus will remain solely on one blue hedgehog. If you’re now the most overjoyed person in the world, or even if you’re still curious about more, let us know in the comments below!

In addition, we’re pleased to also present the first piece of Project Needlemouse Concept Art as a bonus – a special thank you to everyone who took the goals we’d set and then raised the bar even higher!

This art reveals an enemy from the game – but at the same time, it also reveals much more about the spirit, and direction, that Project Needlemouse is taking. For all of you older fans who were stoked by the news above, this should be the icing on the cake. Take a look, and click to see the full-sized image.

    Concept art:
    4276408701_82bfe71a84.jpg

There’s much more in store for Project Needlemouse – including lots more info on the game that is soon to come!

And so, after five days of awesome interaction and thousands upon thousands of correct trivia responses, you all can now take a well deserved break – even if your anticipation levels for this game may have just increased tenfold! We hope you guys are as excited for this game as we are.

From all of us here at SEGA – well done!

Ok, you know what is better than only Sonic being playable? Animal badniks coming back. I've hated these stupid generic robots for so long.

I don't see why this is a big deal to have just Sonic. We've had like 3 games recently that are just Sonic, and they haven't been what the fans were looking for. "Just Sonic" doesn't mean much when that just means Sonic will have two or more vastly different playstyles or be swinging around a sword.

So is here where either the game is bad, proving that all the people complaining about Blaze etc ruining the franchise for ever are wrong to pretend they're the cause (yet at the same time taling about how old sonic was all about speed)? Or where sales are sub-par proving kids and furries are the new audience, not the hardcore few who want just sonic (or sonic, knuckles and tails, those are acceptable new characters)?

    Fifty fifty odds either way.

I am likening your suggestion that Project Needlemouse amounts to little more than cloning the original Sonic the Hedgehog to a similar hypothetical suggestion that New Super Mario Brothers is a cheap clone of the old Mario Brothers games. I'm pretty sure this is going to be a lot more than a simple remake / retread-- from the look of things, this is going to be a whole new Sonic game with an eye toward recapturing the elements that made the original Sonic games so much fun.

Believe it or not - I have faith in Sega this time. Sonic Unleashed is actually a pretty good game except for the Werehog levels - and my son actually likes those so I can understand why they are there (just wish they were there less often). The trend of 2d remakes is strong right now so it would seem the precedent is there for Sega to get this right.

I agree with the prior post that it being Sonic only is good and all - but the biggest deal to me is that the first baddie they show is an animal based one. The generic giant robots sucked, it's great to see a return to form. Now - call him Dr. Robotnick and I'll be a VERY happy gamer.

You won't be playing as all the other characters... because they're dead! And you constantly switch between being possessed by them, so you'll never have to be plain old boring Sonic! Defeat Dr Robotnic, and use his evil techno-alchemy to resurrect your dead friends!

Yeah, Unleashed got a lot of shit, and not all of it was undeserved, but the levels where you are actually, you know, running, were really well-done. Windmill Island and that Italian city place were a blast.

And I grinned from ear to ear when I fell off a platform in New York and actually landed on a lower part of the level. It was like, they finally got it.
