I liked Unleashed until the entire super sonic sequence.
That bullshit voltron stuff was just too much. Then, dying to the final boss over and over again not having any clue what to do, and hearing that god awful j-pop while doing it...
I think I liked the game, but that final boss left such a bad taste in my mouth, I'm not sure anymore.
there are people out there who are actually enraged at the idea of a game featuring only Sonic, and are convinced that anybody who wanted such a game are crybabies.
I knew the Sonic fanbase was full of horrible human beings, but the thought that there are people out there who are seriously disappointed and nerd raging that this wasn't Sonic 2006 part 2 or Shadow The Hedgehog 2 makes me want to laugh and vomit simultaneously
So, they're just going to remake Super Mario Brothers 3?
What?
I am likening your suggestion that Project Needlemouse amounts to little more than cloning the original Sonic the Hedgehog to a similar hypothetical suggestion that New Super Mario Brothers is a cheap clone of the old Mario Brothers games. I'm pretty sure this is going to be a lot more than a simple remake / retread-- from the look of things, this is going to be a whole new Sonic game with an eye toward recapturing the elements that made the original Sonic games so much fun.
Ahh, I see. I haven't really been following Mario for a while, so I wasn't sure what you were getting at.
I'm hoping there is more to it than simply "Hey, look guys it's pretty much Sonic 1, isn't that great!" Because, to be honest, if I wanted to play Sonic 1, I'd go play Sonic 1.

I wish I could punch them through the internet.
I'm not raging or anything, but I certainly would not have minded oldschool Tails and Knuckles returning.
Nor would I have minded Shadow as a mere palette-swap of Sonic.
I should add that old Sonic games for me are sort of like those situations where people get used to playing as Luigi and grow to prefer him over Mario, though I still like Sonic as well.

Sometimes, I'm just happy with more of the same, but different. Same gameplay and such that I know and love, but new levels to explore and things to do.

Is Unleashed actually worth picking up on the 360? I full-cleared Adventure DX, Adventure 2: Battle, Sonic Heroes, and Shadow the Hedgehog, but Sonic 2006 was so... Yeah, terrible, I finished the Last episode and traded it in as soon as I could. I skipped Unleashed because I was still hurting from 2006. All I know about it is "Sonic can turn into a Werehog" and "Bowling For Soup's vocalist sings the main theme this time around". Anyone want to throw in their opinions as to if Unleashed is worth it?

No worry, I keep them in a database in order to remove them from the gene pool the day Skynet (or other dystopian ruling body) takes over.
Personally I am not opposed to have Knuckles and Tails in there, because they were in the first 3 classic Sonic games. It would be awesome if the characters would be mute again - but that would be a bit to much to wish for.
edit: I think the hate of additional Sonic characteres come from following facts: "You are forced to use them", "They change the game's pacing and overall gameplay". Its like you are forced to play the princess in a new Mario 2D game and she has to shoot Ballons in first person.

I think its not good advertising if you need to point out how shitty your previous products / included characters are.
Just as Sidenote, I won't follow the OPs enthusiasm anymore, regarding new Sonic games. Sonic Unleashed burned me pretty badly because I couldn't extract much fun out of it. For me, even the "running stages" were just a memorization game (and not in the positive way). And who thought including quick time events is a good idea -> I rather use the normal game mechanic to decide, which route to take (jump at the right time, jump up, grab the ledge, etc.), thank you.

It's definitely better than Sonic 2006, but so is cancer. There's a little bit of fun to be had in the Sonic stages if you can look past all the QTEs, but considering how you have to trudge through the Werehog levels to play most of them, whether or not it's worth your money is rather questionable.

Sonic Unleashed was the worst game of 2008 IMO
The demo wasn't terrible! At least I didn't think so. I paid $10 for the full game from a coworker that was disappointed.
I soon saw why. The Sonic stages are decent fun, but between the awful Werehog levels and the stupid hub world, they're few and far between. Don't bother.
Also, you thought former Sonic "pals" were bad? You haven't seen shit until you see the little asshole that's in this game that made me want to strangle everyone in the immediate vicinity

I didn't get a chance to finish it (it was my brother's game and he traded it in before I got a chance to) but I loved every minute of Sonic Unleashed
Even the Werehog parts. Yeah they weren't as good as the normal stages, but I don't think they were terrible at all, and I'm kind of the opinion that they would have been better received if you had played as Knuckles during them or some such
Maybe it's because later Sonic games had a record of sucking but Sonic Unleashed was the most fun I'd had playing a Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 1 back on the Dreamcast
I actually love Unleashed. And funny enough I loved the Werehog levels so...I dont know. Opinions opinions. Id say yes pick it up because its so cheap by now its not the end of the world. Plus, the Sonic levels are really fucking awesome. Even if you hate the Werehog levels.

If the game had just given you an option when you started that let me pick "Man Fuck Those Werehog Levels" and just let me play the Sonic levels only without the hub, it might be worth $20 or $30
The question is whether we have a Sonic game yet which remembers about how the original few games used to use momentum instead of just speed to create interesting levels.
Until they get that right, the series is still dead.
Rush Adventure actually wasn't bad, but they outsourced that one.

I 100% agree. It would be really awesome if momentum could be a integral part of the game again - It was so much fun in the genesis games to run down a slope in order to gain speed or hoping to reach a certain point / ledge at the apex of the jump. Of course in the later games you had "high speed" areas which boost you to full speed in a few seconds, but you still had to cope with the momentum at the end in order to not overshoot, or slow down to avoid obstacles.
I understand that Sonic Rush doesn't use the old-school gameplay physics definition of "momentum", but there was definitely an aspect of finding the best route and attempting to maintain top speed (through the rush mechanic). It was less about finding large hills and more about judging when you'd have opportunities to do tricks and build tension, but that's a damn sight closer to the spirit of the originals than the 3D games have ever put forward.

I liked Sonic Rush - but I think there were a few too many blind holes that you fell into with no warning - many more than the original Genesis titles. I really liked the Rush games having a good variety of levels in them. One thing I didn't like about Unleashed and the two exclusive Wii titles was that they were kind of "themed" if you will so you didn't go from a green hill style level to a vegas level to a mechanical level and I missed that.
What is it exactly you guys want Sonic to be about? I always thought the classic platforming was super awkward, if I'm going to be doing stop-and-start jumping over obstacles I'd rather be playing Mario. Maybe they could mix things up a bit more than Sonic Rush's racetrack stages but I'm not playing Sonic so I can stand around.

Speaking personally, I'd just be happy if I could beat the game and not have the chaos emeralds be part of the story, but rather a bonus, with maybe a bonus ending/boss fight.
I remember being fucking pumped the first time I ran into this:
And then, I'd like to be able to go back and play all the normal levels with super sonic, instead of just having some premade level/shitty boss fight based around super sonic where he feels far from super.

Considering that's a badnik from Sonic 2.... no
There were very definitely crab badniks in Sonic 1 and the Sonic 2 badniks being HD reimaginings of them is not too far off.
He means that it is very noticeable that the crab has one giant claw and one small one which is specifically from Sonic 2 and no other game. Though that is very pedantic.

Is that character countdown for playables only, or for characters not even appearing?
If the former, it could be a remake of more than just the first Sonic game; could be the first 3, only you play as Sonic throughout. No Tails and no Knuckles.

In Project Needlemouse, there will be no new characters – playable or otherwise. The focus will remain solely on one blue hedgehog.

No no, I wasn't trying to argue what game the enemy came from (as soon as I saw the picture I knew it was from part 2; it's the crabs that usually appear in front of those tubes you zip through in Metropolis Zone), I was wondering if it was a trilogy-remake.
Which you've already addressed as not being the case.
I don't mind one way or the other, I just wish I could see more. Like the game in action.
Hey, who knows. Perhaps this will finally be the game where there's no extraneous crap holding the game back or bogging it down that soaks up all the blame for the game being awful. And Sonic will finally be able to be judged cleanly upon the series own merits.
And then we can all finally realise that the whole series and concept is inherently terrible, and that gameplay based on a gimmick to wow kids back at the start of the 16 bit era isn't enough to carry a franchise or even a single game in the current generation and they can finally put this worthless franchise to death and perhaps use their money on something good, like a new Panzer Dragoon.
Of course they won't do that. SEGA will try and weasel their way out somehow and blame something for the critical failure of the game and point to the high sales which are owed to the furries and stupid children that make up the lion's share of Sonic's current market. Who themselves will continue to buy it and pretend it's a good game while they masturbate to pictures of cartoon echidnas.

Did you enjoy the Sonic levels of Adventure or Adventure 2? Well, the Sonic levels in Unleashed are better than those. I had tons of fun with them. Werehog levels are mediocre, but not unplayable or anything. The final boss is terrible, though.
I full-cleared the game, and still go back to play some Sonic levels. Never touching the rest of the game, though.

what
Doing platforming games quickly is almost fundamental to the genre. Building a platforming game around the concept of speed is not just a good idea, but an obvious one. Inherently terrible? Challenging perhaps, but far from terrible.

My mistake, I misread what you'd wrote. I've been up since 5:00 am *glances at clock* yesterday morning working on a big project that is nearing a deadline and I'm pretty tired at the moment.
But, to reiterate, not to you specifically - I don't think this is a remake of any game, and practically everything which has been shown off so far (which admittedly isn't much) agrees with me.

I disagree - the concept is not "inherently terrible," no more so than pinball is. Gravity based momentum is very enjoyable, and no I'm not pretending to myself despite your claims.
And as an aside, the whole "I don't like something so I'll insult everyone who does to make myself feel superior" attitude is frustrating, but at least you spoilered it so I can avoid it when/if I come back to this page.
One last point before I probably head to bed - a friend of mine who visits NeoGAF said that someone working on Needlemouse has started posting there and said something akin to their goal being to kill the sonic cycle. The fact that they've acknowledged that image shows they're at least aware of the criticisms, which is hopeful. Although, as a double edged sword, if they are aware and then fall into the same pitholes, then they literally have no excuses to prop themselves up with.

I agree. And "gravity based momentum" don't need a blue hedgehog to be fun. Actually it seems that the blue hedgehog somehow manages to make gravity based momentum less fun.

I agree. And "gravity based momentum" don't need a blue hedgehog to be fun. Actually it seems that the blue hedgehog somehow manages to make gravity based momentum less fun.
