I know its just the first stage, but it felt way too easy
is the rest of the game an appropriate difficulty?
I'd say that the Lost Labyrinth zone and Mad Gear zone are stepped up a little bit in terms of difficulty but the game never quite reaches pull-your-hair out levels until you get to the later Special Stages.
I can't see anyone who likes the original Sonics being disapointed by this, it dosen't feel like Sonic 2 to me (which was the aim I thought) but it feels Sonic enough, looks good and is fast. So I am happy
Also now it's made me want to go out and buy another PS2 so I can finish Sonic CD, damn my lack of moneys.

It really feels to me like Sonic Advance + Homing Attack.
I'm having a lot of trouble with Mad Gear Zone Boss, but other than that this game has been very easy. I've been really enjoying the new Special Stages too. I thought the fact that there's a time limit would be frustrating, but it never became a major problem.
So is it worth the 15 dollars? I know most downloadable games don't have price cuts except for a rare sale every now and then so it's basically do I wan't to drop 15 bones or never play the game ever.
My only complaint is that it's a tad on the short side, but it is fun.
It's episodic it's short by design
Well, of course, but it's "Short considering it's $15"

Yeah pretty much, Im still getting my homing attack skills down.

Have you gotten to Special Stage 4 yet? That's when it really hit the fan for me. If I remember properly 5 is also hard, but 6 isn't too bad and I had to play the 7th stage at least 10 times before I got it wrapped up.

I only have the last one left to do, it's the only one I've gotten stuck on yet. But it's just as much getting to the stage as it is clearing it.

I found that Casino Street Act 3 was the easiest to run through quickly, assuming you didn't get an emerald in it already.

Yeah, I'll give that level a shot. My go to level at the moment for clearing quickly is Mad Gear Act 1, providing I don't mess up and get hit near the end.

Well, I also found that CSA3 also lacked many enemies.
Did Sega ever announce a specific number of episodes for this? Or is all up in the air at the moment?
Up in the air, but I'd make a wild guess at three. If they keep four zones per episode going by the end of the third episode they'll have matched the number in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. (More or less)
the controls actually feel a little too tight, which is a weird complaint. But in the Genesis games you have to sort of work with the momentum to get Sonic to act how you want him to, whereas here he just instantly respond to whatever you want
also I managed to casually walk through a shuttle loop which I feel like I shouldn't be able to do.
it seems nitpicky but I really don't like the walking animation. the slower animations in the old games make it look like sonic is slowly building up speed. Here he's just kinda strolling and then slowly speeds up until his legs get replaced by the blur.
I might have still bought it anyway for 10 bucks but 15 might be pushin' it
I am more annoyed at the fact that the only deaths I've gotten in this game are from bottomless pits.
Especially long, drawn out platform sections over bottomless pits. See: Act 2 and 3 of Casino Street. And GOD DAMN that mini-homing jump screws me up in those.

heh, Casino Zones bottomless pits killed me quite a few times too. :P
The only thing movement wise that I don't like is how he doesn't keep moving out of momentum when you jump forward. Instead he just stops, which has caused my death a few times.
Damn, I'm loving this game. This is the first sonic game I would call really, really good since S&K. The physics are different from the classic sonics, but it makes it feel fresh; I was also very leery about the homing attack, but it works really well in the game. I'm just starting mad gear now, and I've got 3 emeralds so far. And 42 lives! That 99 lives achievement shouldn't be too tricky.

Fuck those card platforms. Fortunately, you gain so many lives on that level, it makes up for falling down the pit for the 50th time.

This is out on live yes? I shall get it when I can be bothered to turn on my 360 lol.
So I was going to post some impressions from the demo, having not decided whether to buy it or not, but I just got an e-mail saying that I should expect a review code tomorrow morning.
So how much better is this than the Advance/Rush series? Or is this simply a case of people finally paying attention to Dimps' solid work now that it is on a larger screen?

Ahahaha yes
For one section I wasn't annoyed at all.
"Oh look at that I fell down a pit.
Whelp, time to get that extra life box and hit three rows of cards to get up to three more!"

Yay I just got the world record on Splash Hill Act 3 Time attack!
(screenshot incoming soonish. Hopefully. If anyone cares. 1'00"94. I love Time Attacks)
Edit: Now 0'55"87
Nice world record, I'll take it.

Darn! Nice job! I'll give it another crack tomorrow morning. See if I can drag down the numbers a little more. Also managed to dethrone the best time on Splash Hill Zone Act 2.
(Screenies of times in the spoilers. Xbox 360 version - Time Attack, not Score Attack. So, so sorry for crappy camera phone because my digital camera went bust. Roll on Christmas!)
Edit: Hands up then guys, who got their arse handed to them by the last boss, confounded by what to do, and loved every minute of it? Haven't had a game do that to me in quite some time!
Bought it and love it. True return to form. Have completed the first zone and will come back to it proper when my wrist is no longer broken. It's really cramping my style

I think the thing about it I love the most is the sound effects. Mostly because while the whole game feels like a big ol' homage to Sonic 1/2, some of those sound effects evoke so much nostalgia. The 1up theme being from Sonic 3 for example...
And Mad Gear's boss fight, when it turns into a chase and Robotnik chucks out a big exploding balloon and it makes the same sound as bouncing on a mushroom in Mushroom Hill.
Considering Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favourite game of all time, it feels incredibly comforting to hear those familiar sound effects again. The entire title was an absolute treat to play from start to finish.
Man, you guys weren't kidding about special stage 7. I've made 12 attempts so far, no luck yet. On the plus side I now have 211 lives from all the attempts. I'm glad I left a splash hill stage with no emerald for this last one.

Man this game is so good. Sega have finally figured out that solid platforming mechanics and not just pure speed are what makes a good sonic game. Tight controls as well and feels really very solid. I am extremely happy.
Yes. Got emerald number 7 on my 18th try. Amusingly, I played splash hill act 3 so many times to get it I'm now ranked number 10 in score attack on the xbox leaderboards for that zone. Score!

Page 89, good sir!
Seriously though, what were they thinking. Cruising along like Sonic should then BAM some Resident Evil bullshit.
