First console I ever pre-ordered, me and my brother bought EVERYTHING on day one.
Multiple controllers, arcade sticks, rumble packs, VMUs, and the games that mattered (although we had to wait a week or two for Soul Calibur to release here).
Loved the shit outta my DC. Crazy Taxi and Powerstone were the best games evar!
I can't express in words the YEARS of anticipation for Sonic Adventure. It wasn't just that the game took a full year to come to the US, but prior to that, there hadn't been a proper Sonic game in 5 years.
Fuck what ANYBODY says, Sonic Adventure satisfied me so well. And yes, I've played it recently.
Sonic Adventure 1 was great, Sonic Adventure 2 was the beginning of the end..
... Oh yeah, and I played the fuck outta Hydro Thunder and Power Stone.
Thanks thread. Now I have to try fruitlessly for the next three days to try and set up a DC<->PC server so my Dreamcast can talk to the internet once more.
Soul Calibur, Chu Chu Rocket, Quake 3, Powerstone. How many hours did my friends and I lose to you?
I have to admit that I was not one of those who did his part. I was still in the loving embrace of the N64 back in 1999 and I remember thinking that the ads for the Dreamcast made it look quite pathetic. We didn't have the "It's thinking" ones we had "Play everyone" or something like that. I was a little resentful that it had taken the N64's "most powerful" title away and anyway it had a silly squiggle for a logo and a sissy name.
Now of course I wish that the Dreamcast has succeeded. I miss those guys making consoles. Sega is like a shadow of itself now. If I could I would wipe from time either the Xbox or Playstation and replace it with a Sega machine. Not Nintendo though.
Fuck. I just sent Maken X out on Goozex. I have had it for 3 years, and never even put it in. I saw it for $5, and just never found the time, with new games coming out and stuff. I finally figured it was worth unloading because I needed a quick 100 points to get Fallout expansion packs.
Im now very sad. But I am playing Seaman today, so that's good.

I loved the Dreamcast, absolutely loved it. To me the Dreamcast was the best console of its time and still maintains the top spot of Most Loved Console, with Xbox 360 coming a close second. The Dreamcast was far ahead of its time compared to competitors. The games even today are pretty damn impressively detailed and well built. The idea of online gaming on a console was spawned from the Dreamcast. I still remember how Sony's attitude was that it would never take off. GUESS WHAT SONY YOU WERE WRONG AGAIN!
And the Internet as well on it!
And a free game to everyone!
Sadly my console died 2 years ago. It was however replaced a couple of months ago by a new Dreamcast! Plugged all back in and onto my second VGA port on my TFT monitor, I can play all my favourite games again! Yaaaaaaay!
I need to get me a new Dreamcast, the disc drive in mine crapped out last year and I need to play my Power Stone 2, Soul Caliber, and Jet Grind Radio again

One of my college roommates had a Dreamcast (c. 2001). How big a problem was piracy for Sega and their developers? I seem to recall that my roommate had dozens and dozens of Dreamcast games, even though he had purchased maybe two of them.
My friends and I are having a little get-together to celebrate the Dreamcast tonight. Definitely going to be playing Jet Set Radio, Chu Chu Rocket, Power Stone 2, Shenmue, and Sonic Adventure 2. If we have time, maybe some Maken X, Space Channel 5, and Zombie Revenge.

I'm not sure of the exact date, but all DCs made before a certain date will boot games burned on a CD-R. So I guess that would qualify as a big problem.

Okay admittedly I didn't get into it until I picked up the Gamecube remake but any system that produces something as timeless as that is worthy of the highest praise
Also Tech Romancer remains my favorite fighting game of all time, the only one I ever bothered to get really good at, and the only one I've ever unlocked everything on (FUCKING FINAL BOSS FUCKING FUCK FUCK FUUUUCK)
PSO is totally awesome.
Isn't the new DS one supposed to have proper online multiplayer? We need to get a group going.
I think you mean the PSP one?

Crrrrrazy Taxi became a sickness for me; I had to keep playing until I got EVERYONE to their destination.
Is that possible? Is there a point when everyone is gone?
I am pretty sure it has been done; I never got there, but I know at one point my dedication was so strong that I got down to about a dozen people left; I had lapped the world map multiple times.

The site reveals that the game will support online parties of four players, that characters can be created from three races and 14 classes, and there's also a small section on the ace-looking, sketch-compatible chat system, as seen here.
Hell yeah I did my part, had a dreamcast, Code Veronica, that was about it really but I played that game all the time. Then my friend killed my dreamcast somehow.
My aunt and my cousin played the ever loving shit out of House of the Dead 2. Even got a lightgun for it (didn't get too though, a bit expensive). Meanwhile, me and another cousin were busy killing the shit out of each other in MvC2, Tech Romancer, Soul Calibur, Capcom VS SNK 1, or PowerStone 1, or there'd be 4 of us having a grand time on PowerStone 2 (the running away from the boulder section was so memorable). Not to mention other great games like Crazy Taxi and Sega Bass Fishing (oh the peripheral for that was a hoot, I think you could play Soul Calibur with it too).
Man the DC was an excellent system. I never got to play JSF, it would be nice if it was re-released on XBLA or PSN.
I'll never forget bringing home my Dreamcast for the first time with Soul Calibur. That was an awesome day.
I think it needs to be stated how great it was to be a Dreamcast owner in the winter of 2000. Shenmue, Skies, JGR, and PSO all coming out within a 3 month span of each other. Plus quite a few other awesome games like my favorite racing game ever, Rush 2049.

I never got in on the ground floor, but several years ago (2004 or 2005), a former forumer here (Wayne) had opened a new gaming website (Disc Read Error) and was giving away a Dreamcast and assorted goods. I never win anything, but entered for the hell of it... and won. It included a DC, second controller, VMU, Shenmue, and JGR. I've since gotten just about every game I could find and have had a ton of fun. It's hooked up to the tv in my bedroom right now.
There was also another forumer, I want to say Variable but I can't remember now, that gave me 2 of the StarFire lightguns, which was also incredibly awesome. So thanks!
Man - I am on ebay right now looking for a Dreamcast. This brings back fond memories. This came out just after I graduated High School and I remember thinking, "This is it....this is the console I have been waiting for"
I got rid of it all a long time ago sadly. I miss Skies of Arcadia and it's seizure inducing effects.
If everyone loved it so much, then why did it fail?
Honest question, I'm not being sarcastic, but back then I didn't care about consoles.

Jet Grind Radio was quite the gaming experience, Shenmue broke my heart with its abrupt ending, Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia tickled my RPG cockles, Crazy Taxi was pure awesome, Ikaruga was my only run-in with loving S&M, Soul Calibur is still the best Soul game ever made, Quake 3 Arena let me enjoy a kickass PC game at a time when my PC was not up to the task, complete with KB+M and online play... and Bleemcast! let me enjoy Metal Gear Solid in sexy VGA quality.

Because Sony had marketing spin on their side without question, and Sega could have packaged legalized crack in their boxes and it would not have overcome the horrible business decisions of the 90's they made.

Saturn did extremely poorly and its failure rubbed off on Dreamcast, piracy, PS2 hype took a lot of steam out of the console, Sega was in bad financial condition so it had to be profitable pretty quickly, and EA didn't support it.
I used to have a fantastic Dreamcast collection but sold it all to get Xbox/GC/PS2 hardware and games, a decision I don't really regret too much given I had no way of affording all that otherwise and a lot of Dreamcast games got ported. A few weeks ago I got another Dreamcast and it's nice reliving some old memories and to confirm that Soul Calibur 1 is still the best in the series.
It's so loud though! I don't remember my old Japanese launch system being quite this loud. I've taken it apart and it's a model with a metal fan so maybe all it needs is a good clean and a drop of oil. I don't think anything can done for clicky drive sound or that funny sound it makes when it suddenly wants to access some data though. :P
I remember in the months leading up to the release of the PS2, I heard quite a few fanboys bitching about the Dreamcast not having BC for the Saturn, as the PS2's BC for the PS1 was one of the most hyped features. These motherfuckers never played any Saturn games, but were still saying, "Man, its not even backwards compatible? That's a dealbreaker right there."
It wasn't just the failure of the Saturn that gave Sega a bad reputation. Most people saw the Sega CD and 32X as pretty big failures as well. That's 3 strikes and you're out.

I loved my Dreamcast so much.
I bought the system on launch, along with Sonic Adventure, Air Force Delta, Soul Calibur, and then I went back that afternoon to pick up NFL 2K because the Funco Land shipment for some of the launch games didn't arrive until the afternoon. The only thing I regret about it was that I traded in my Saturn and a butt load of games to pay for the Dreamcast, which I could have held onto and sold on eBay a year or so later and made double the price easily. But I was a teenager then, I didn't know better.
I even signed up for the AT&T internet stuff so I could be a true Dreamcast fan, then did the same thing with Sega.net a year later.
So many fun games. And I liked how it didn't seem to be as dark as the PS or PS2 was in simple things like the menus and such, it was that Sega font they use in all games, nice clean bright stuff for things like checking the VMU or setting up the time and date, it just put a smile on my face.

I walked in and watched the manager playing an import copy of Code: Veronica and didn't think graphics could ever get better.
My Dreamcast now sleeps in its original plastic bags and box next to my bed, but still provides me with much fun when I break it out.
