So I wake up yesterday, walk downstairs and I encounter this.
Usually, it is in the back of my closet but yesterday, the tenth anniversary of said system, it greeted me at the bottom of my stairs to say good morning. I kind of freaked out a bit, but it turns out my girlfriend was looking for something, drug it out cause it was in the way and forgot to put it back. Just thought I'd share this bizarre story.
Also, needless to say I hooked that shit up and played Jet Grind Radio.
You should be more concerned that the walls in your house are made out of some kind of custard...
Yeah it's a basement that the landlord turned into a bedroom area. It actually flooded back in June and the asshole never came to fix it, that's why it looks pretty gross.
Hardly ever hear of anyone else who had one of those.
I forgot they made a second one. I definitely had the SMS 1: black rectangle box
I loved it although I have to admit there were a lot of mediocre games on it. But it had the first RPG I really got into: Phantasy Star!
I had a 2. It had the flip down cartridge slot cover but it didn't have a built in game which disappointed me. I only got it because my friend had one. To be honest if I could I would have changed it to an NES.
Master Systems were a lot more popular here in the UK. I don't think Sega were a big deal in the states until the Genesis.
Nope. I was the only person I knew of with an SMS but there were plenty of NESes around for sure!
I still maintain that disc 3 of Shenmue 2 is the best disc ever of anything. If i remember correctly it does away with alot of the book-carrying and leaf catching and dives straight into the hizzle of the kung-fizzle, so to speak. Also Ren, let's all do a radical fist pump in honor of him.
I thought Shenmue 2 was one of the most brilliant games ever until I got to the third round of a wrestling match, couldn't beat it, and thus never saw the supposedly very beautiful ending.
Ah the Dreamcast. Sadly I don't have mine anymore but I will forever look back on it fondly as the console that got me through dormlife.
Spent about 2 years worth of weekends drinking Heineken, racing in Sega Rally or fighting in Soul Calibur. And I could distract the girlfriend with Sonic Adventure when the hangovers were too brutal.
For some odd reason I missed Skies of Arcadia completely until it's re-release on the Gamecube.
I used the Dreamcast controller's d-pad for all fighting games ... and, after two years, I was GOOD with it. I could bust some heads in Mark of the Wolves and Street Fighter 3.
Rival Schools and Jet Grind Radio, i now own Jet Set Radio Future as well, love those games sooooo much i play them and replay them, they need to come out with new ones.
On the flip side i got bored of my DC and am selling it and all my games with it atm.

Oh man, I completely destroyed people in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 with that controller. The d-pad was one of the best of any system.

With it's single analog stick, doesn't that put it in PSP annoyance level territory?

The perennial hockey and football (and basketball) Sega Sports games on this system were all aces. Especially the football. The odd man out though was World Series baseball. What a crappy game, you couldn't even control your fielders movements and there was no option to change it. Who would even decide to make a game like that is beyond me.
I'm almost mad at Sega for not announcing the dreamcast 2. 10 years later on 9/9/09 they announce dreamcast 2. That would be so epic.
The 360 could be considered to have some Dreamcast DNA in it, as much as Peter Moore took lessons learned from his time at Sega and applied them to the 360.

If they made a new Rival Schools, my life would be complete.
So I don't know if you guys with Dreamcast have this problem, but over the years my Dreamcast has been getting these problems reading the discs, and I just basically wait for the DC to heat up or something. (IE: wait 30 min to warm up) and the discs start working again. Im just wondering if any of you guys know the problem or if there might be another solution. I wanna play Skies of Arcadia.

I used to play the shit out of Typing of the Dead. Oh, and that little game called PSO. I miss those days. I also missed this thread, and forgot to celebrate the anniversary. I feel like a douche now. Thanks for reminding me PA.

Upon release, I seriously viewed the 360 as Dreamcast 2.0
Weird, because I never liked the first xbox.
When Moore left I was pretty gutted, I always thought he did damned good work at both SEGA and MS.
Edit; Everytime the DC comes up, I see people ask "where the Hell is Chu-Chu Rocket HD?"
For reals though, where the Hell is Chu-Chu Rocket XBLA/PSN/Wii?

Yeah I felt for all intent and purposes that the 360 was just an evolution of the dreamcast. Pretty much everything they were testing out with that thing has been polished like mad and put on the 360.

Man, I love the DC. Still have mine (and an extra one in a box somewhere which is technically my fiancee's, but he never plays the thing) and until recentley I had it hooked up, though hardly played it. Reading this thread makes me want to hook it back up again and go through some classics, or at least sample their delights to recall the magic I felt back in the day.
My DC story is one of unbridled excitement and joy, having heard about it due to my love of the Resident Evil series. I had a PS1 at the time and finished all the RE games for the system, and then I heard the new one would be out on the Dreamcast. Well, I didn't need to know anything other than that, I just knew I needed that system as soon as it came out. So around the time of its launch my mum bought me one (I want to say birthday, but my birthday was a couple of months before the DC launch, and I got it before CV came out which was early 2000 here... so not sure) along with Crazy Taxi and Power Stone. I also had the Official Dreamcast Magazine with the demo for CV, and I was just blown away. My friend and I would spend hours playing Crazy Taxi and Power Stone... even my brother, who isn't much of a gamer, loved those games. The CV demo was also amazing and I couldn't wait for it to come out!
Anyway, my love affair with the console started, and I built up a big collection of games (including Samba with marracas, though not the official ones, which I lost/were stolen in Uni!) and enjoyed each and every one. I was infatuated by the system, and was so glad that I bought it, even though it was originally only for RE:CV, but there were just so many more fantastic games for it. I even wrote for a fan site, Dreamcast Source, though looking back my writing was appauling (though I was 16/17). It was a great time though, and I met some good internet buddies through that site. As you can see it's still up now, as the webmaster loved the DC so much aswell that he wanted to keep it up for posterity, even though it hasn't been updated in over 7 years.
My favourite DC games included:
Power Stone 1 and 2
Crazy Taxi
RE:CV
Space Channel 5
Jet Set Radio
Rez
Shenmue 1 & 2
Headhunter
Soul Calibur
Skies Of Arcadia
Grandia 2
PSO
D2
Did anyone else play D2? If you did, did you also enjoy it like I did? It had its flaws, sure, but I thought it was a mesmerising and beautiful game and love it to pieces. Shenmue 1 & 2 hold a special place in my heart, and its one game series I would pay SEGA to finish as they were just fantastic games. Same goes for Skies of Arcadia actually.
Here's to you, Dreamcast. And long may I enjoy your library of spectacular games.
So, Giant Bomb has a Dreamcast series of retrospective videos, and all they pretty much do is bitch about the games in each video.
Nice class GB has.
... I watched the Chu Chu Rocket and Power Stone 2 videos. I didn't see/hear any "bitching" there, in fact in the Chu Chu Rocket video there were several "this game is insane. and awesome. but insane. but so awesome." style statements.
Where's the bitching? :?
Edit - Okay, the Sonic Adventure video contained a lot of bitching. And as the holder of a Crazy-level license, I couldn't bear more than a few moments of the Crazy Taxi video.

I loved my DreamCast, but I have to say this:
Worst. Controller. Ever. The only thing that approached it's level of hamfisted-ness was the original XBox controller before they released the S.

I have the US verion which I've played, and also a copy of the Japanese 'Bliss' edition which has a strange cover depicting the Earth. I don't know why I got that version really. I may have to play my US copy again though.
Reading this thread makes me wonder why I never had a DC. Strangely, a couple months ago, I saw some NIB DCs being sold on Newegg for like $99. I asked on these very forums if that was worth it and the resounding answer was, "no." Now I kinda wish I had one so I could experience the awesome that is/was the DC.

The Japanese version apparently has some ... uh ... stereotypically Japanese-anime attitudes towards women ...
Sega did edit slightly the game's second opening movie (where one character is attacked by a phallic tentacle creature) for the North American release.

OOOOH! I remember. That was strange. I think I just bought it for the lovely cover though, rather than the tentacle rape. I did buy the Japanese version of Shenmue 1 though, as I heard about a few differences like the cola machines actually being Coca-Cola ones... I think?

Couldn't find it. Probably for the better of those fools who told you not to get a Dreamcast. :P
Speaking of imports, I did import Headhunter, Rez, Ikaruga, and some other nifty games. Which is why I giggled so much when people went apeshit over their re-release in NA on PS2/XBLA (depending on the game) because I'd played it how many years ago, you're old lol.

Headhunter has aged really badly.
So, I only own four games for it (I think I have DOA2 somewhere though).
Dude, you're crazy. That controller was awesome, fit perfectly into the hands , and it had the slot for the VMU.
Which reminds me have we talked about the VMU yet? (I missed the first few pages of discussion obviously.)
That shit was awesome.
Yeah, I removed GB from my RSS reader after watching 5 minutes of their Shenmue commentary. Useless.
