Speaking of imports, I did import Headhunter, Rez, Ikaruga, and some other nifty games. Which is why I giggled so much when people went apeshit over their re-release in NA on PS2/XBLA (depending on the game) because I'd played it how many years ago, you're old lol.

To be fair, it's worth getting the XBLA rerelease even if you have the original DC version. HD graphics, new modes, and the ability to use extra controllers as trance vibrators for $10? Definitely worth it.

What the hell guys? No love for Gauntlet Legends? My friends would come over, bringing their controllers so we'd have 4 and just spend hours playing the hell out of that game.

So much dickery too. Player 1 Needs food Badly.

I can only really echo the other sentiments of this thread. For me as well, the DC was really the last time I sat down with a console and really had that child-like excitement playing it for the first time. It was also the first console I bought 100% on my own, and damn it felt good to do that.

My short list of those DC games that I really loved:

    Sonic Adventure 1 and 2
    Marvel vs Capcom 2
    Streetfighter Alpha 3
    Daytona USA 2001
    Powerstone 2
    Shenmue
    Resident Evil Code Veronica
    Soul Calibur
    Vigilante 8 Second Off.
    Crazy Taxi 2

I asked on these very forums if that was worth it and the resounding answer was, "no." Now I kinda wish I had one so I could experience the awesome that is/was the DC.

    Also, I don't have a 360.

    What?

I was never able to finish D2. It makes the original look bad by association. I guess it's not bad on its own, but compared to a classic...

Also, after playing some prerequisite JSR, I decided to work on one of a handful of DC games I never finished; an ultra obscure one.

"I-SPY: Industrial Espionage". It seemed unique enough to try, and it's certainly that. You control up to four spies to infiltrate and hack corporations. The game feels very experimental, like they had a lot of ideas and couldn't quite get them to make sense. It can get extremely obtuse at times.

And I consider the Xbox the Dreamcast 2.0. Such a great quirky assortment of games.

Has anyone played Segagaga? I had that at one point, and enjoyed it as much as I could enjoy a game I couldn't understand. There was a translation for the most important bits, but after a while the fact I had pretty much no idea what was actually going on turned me off the game. Other than that it seemed really interesting, and if they had translated it into English I think I would have enjoyed it!

My one big regret about my DC is I could NEVER get any of the homebrew stuff working on it. Which is a shame, since throwing in some of the cool ports and the like out there onto it would've easily extended its lifespan by a few months.

I might go try again at some point, though, once I have a TV that can handle SD signals worth a damn again.

Am I just dreaming, or did that Industrial Spy game come out in Europe under a different name? I may be crazy though, it may have never made it over here...

One game that never came out in Europe I kinda wanted to try was Illbleed. How good was that?

I was kind glad, talking about region exclusives, that Europe got Rez and Shenmue II outside of Japan, and the US didn't. Made up for all those games the US got that never came out over here.

Illbleed is best described as what would happen if you let Rob Zombie develop a survival horror game.

    It's delightfully deranged.

Also, I own the PAL Shenmue 2 for DC. It's the only way to go.

I agree it's far better than the Xbox version... I know that apart from the voiceovers they are the same, but I enjoyed the Japanese voiceovers better as they fit the overall feel of the game (I know you could switch to Japanese on the Xbox version, but still), and also it just felt nice to play the game on the DC. Don't get me wrong, I have the game on the Xbox too, mostly to support the series in the hopes it would sell enough to give SEGA a reason to finish the series off with a third game, but it is the DC version I have fond, cherished memories of. There were some truly beautiful moments in that game.

The Dreamcast controller was perfect (minus the cord) because of the way your hands fit into it. The controller may have been large by normal standards. However the way it was designed allowed for you to reach every button, stick, and trigger with ease. It's the anti-N64 controller. the N64 was a ugly bitch who wasn't exceptionally large.. unless you tried to hold it like a normal controller, which made it impossible to reach the middle stick ( it took my 12 year old self a little while to realize how much easier holding the middle of it was). Either way it was an unnecessary bulky design that created the illusion that it was larger than it really was. I'd put the Dreamcast controller at #2 on the all time list with #1 being the Xbox 360 controller easily. It's also pretty obvious that the 360 controller is an evolved Dreamcast baby.

I saved every dime I could for months in anticipation of the Dreamcast release, because I *knew* it was going to be the best console of its generation... on release day, I cleared my meager adolescent bank account and grabbed 4 controllers, 4 VMUs, Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, and Power Stone. To this day, I still don't think I've had more fun with a fighting game than I did with Power Stone. But I do regret buying those VMUs. =) lol

The DC and original Xbox controllers fit into my hands just fine.

On the other hand, I also used an NES-controller-shaped PS2 controller for a longass time, since it was an insanely comfortable controller. So maybe my hands are just mutated, freakish beasts that terrify small children.

I wasn't too fond of the controller myself. While my larger hands felt more or less at home around the controller, the D-Pad was a touch too floaty for my preference. Playing a lot of fighting games it took a little bit longer than I would have liked to get used to. The rough angles on the D-Pad didn't help much either.

That said, has anyone mentioned the two 'unused' buttons that exsist on the circut board, yet don't have corrisponding buttons on the shell? As a matter of fact, these buttons (labeled C and Z respectively) would be used on a small handfull of 3rd party pads and were infact recognized in several games (typically Capcom fighters so you could assign KKK, PPP, or Taunt if you so desired). What the heck Sega?

Otherwise I really did like the Dreamcast, even if I did wait until the Sega Smash Pack (of Phail) bundle before I picked up my own system. Until then I was mostly playing the store unit at the Microplay I worked at. Several of us acctually used to play Quake III and Gauntlet Legends regularlly (as well as the odd other game now and again like Fur Fighters and Toy Commander). Another little factoid is that the store also had a Japanese Dreamcast for demo before the US launch. It was pretty nice to play House of the Dead 2 with the official Sega gun.

The gamestore in the mall had a midnight release of the system, except, the ups truck didn't arrive until 2:30 am. I slept on one of the little benches next to a fountain inside the mall. When the truck finally arrived, people mobbed the poor driver. I remember this gang member type guy in front of me buying the system and every launch title. I could only afford the system and soul calibur. One of the best gaming moments I've ever had....just ahead of Beatles Rock Band.

Wasn't badmouthing it so much as it was not the BEST title to put in a kiosk on launch day. IE there was no way to take turns, and it really didn't show off the system that much.

Love JoJo, still play it every now and then...I usually bust out various fighters depending on the mood, and the DC has some of the best. :D

You know something... I've never played Crazy Taxi 2. I realised this while watching a video of Crazy Taxi (which has made me want to set up my DC even more), and I wondered why the hell I never got it. Is it still worth getting today? Is it as good as the original?

Oh man Rush 2049, I had so much fun just with the demo of that game. My friends and I would spend entire afternoons fucking around in Stunt mode. Making a car do flips and shit is much cooler than doing it in a skateboarding game.

I liked CT2 alot. Reviews said it was too much of the same, but I felt the addition of the hop added a ton of depth to the gameplay now that a skilled vault over a building cuts seconds off your time. Plus, the 2 levels were densely packed together meaning it was still really a 'point-a-to-point-b' objective but you had a couple of ways to get there. Small Apple in CT2 is by far the hardest CT map I've played, but it's awesome.

If you can't get CT2 on DC, CT3 on Xbox is the next best thing. Despite the engine problems in Glitter Oasis, you get a retooled Small Apple that is a bit more forgiving than CT2s version.

The DC and original Xbox controllers fit into my hands just fine.

On the other hand, I also used an NES-controller-shaped PS2 controller for a longass time, since it was an insanely comfortable controller. So maybe my hands are just mutated, freakish beasts that terrify small children.

They've reduced me to tears on more than one occasion

Oh man, Dreamcast...how I miss thee.

So many awesome games...so many. Way more than it was ever given credit for.

And although it's not necessarily the nerd thing to say, I'll say it anyway:

Hydro Thunder was the best goddamn game of all time :x

So was anyone else part of the "imported PSO ver. 2 from Japan" club? Because I was and it's my fondest memory. It took so much work to get a japanese hunter's license, but I did it. I had to have those new levels and mags.

The hopping thing just turned me off...I felt it was more intense and skilled to dodge traffic by mere inches rather than leapfrog over it...I felt it really changed the game. Still played it though, just didn't enjoy it nearly as much. The replay option was nice though!

So I was going through my old titles looking for obscure stuff...let's see. Anyone remember these?

Loved them both, played the heck out of them...*really* solid games, although I think Red Dog was a bit better, but both were highly underrated.
