Windows police pro virus

I've done some online reading and figured out how to get rid of this virus. It's one of those viruses that masquerades as anti-virus software and ransoms your system until you buy the program. It was rather clever, in that it stopped me from running any programs, i seem to have fixed that problem, and I have deleted all the related files and registry entries. However I still can't run my anti-virus software. Even when i reinstalled spybot, It started to scan for 5 seconds, the program just disappeared. When I try to open it again it gives me an error message reading "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Also, I still seem to get redirected from links to ad websites every once in a while.

I'm running windows xp home edition. I will be glad to give any other system specs if you think it will be usefull.

thanks in advance for any help.

Try running Malware bytes. That seems to get around most of this crap.

I really hate these threads being a deluge of software for you to download and try, but here we go...

Download and try Avast! Its free and very very awesome. Having it run on start up would probably catch it.

Superantispyware is another one to try. It killed a nasty virus I had that spybot completely failed to detect, so its been very effective for me.

if it's within your technical know how,
back up important files (family photos? music? home movies?),
    and format.

if it's not within your technical know how,
read up on re-installing your operating system,
back up important files (family photos? music? home movies?),
    and format.

    Nothing like a clean computer.

Back everything up, take off, and

Nuke the entire site from orbit.

It's the only way to be sure.

    1) It's not a virus.
    2) Run Malwarebytes in safe mode, with network connection since you'll need to update it.

also, avast scanned on boot and found some stuff. I was very optimistic. Now that i've booted however, Avast doesn't work. though it seems to have fixed whatever was sending me to ads when i clicked on links. it is nice to not have to try three times just to view the forums.
