Less then pleased with Wii Fits placement up there (because its fitness related claims are bullocks basically, and I have a marked distaste for all that get fit quick rubbish), but otherwise congrats Nintendo I guess.
I think some of your ire towards Wii Fit is a bit misplaced. Miyamoto has said that it's not something to make you "get fit quick", but rather it makes you more aware of your body. And as you see how little changes help you lose weight, that's where the fun comes in.
Wii Fit's not supposed to replace like a full time trainer, or provide the ideal exercises to maximize weightloss and fitness for any particular person.
Nintendo has described it as, essentially, a fitness companion app. Something you do for fun in addition to other exercises. Nintendo has also described it as a means to get people to think about their health and fitness, keep it on their mind, so that hopefully they'll make more healthy decisions.
In both regards I think it does what it set out to do.

Exactly. In addition to exercises, the game also makes you think about whether or not you actually want that super deluxe bacon double cheeseburger before weigh-in. The game makes one more conscious of one's diet as much as it burns fat directly.
I don't think they're concerned about what the game actually does or what Nintendo's intent is. They don't like Wii Fit because it gives stupid people an excuse to claim "I'm on a workout program, I'm getting healthy!"
Which to me, is like hating on an FPS because it gives stupid people an excuse to claim "video games are teaching our children to murder!"
Neither is a valid excuse and neither is the fault of the game or manufacturer.
They are explicitly aware of what they're doing. In much the same way they are when they sell you brain age claiming it keeps your brain active.
I mean setting aside the danger of constantly checking your weight and using bmi as an indicator. They made it because they knew it would sell, by playing upon certain ideas and fears.
To be fair, Brain Age does keep the brain active. But then, so does any other thing a person can do that provides external stimulus. Such as any other game...
Nintendo's been pretty savvy with not specifically promising anything, but they're well aware of people connecting the dots and regarding Wii Fit as an exercise device. And to be fair, if you stick to any kind of moving and shaking, you will generally lose some weight if you've never done that sort of thing on a regular basis. It is pretty nice to have a digital record of your weight and BMI readings on a chart in front of you.
I got to try Wii Fit Plus at a press event and it seems to be what the original should have been in the first place; you can customize your own routines or pick from preset workouts X, Y or Z minutes long, depending on what areas of the body you want to work on. We'll be getting a copy, so my wife (who regularly goes to the gym anyway) is interested in seeing how the yoga stuff works out, particularly since it tracks your balance.
Yeah, I picked up Wii Fit +. Lunker's right, the ability to do "routines" is a big improvement, and I can do more stuff in less time. Pretty slick move by Nintendo to price it at $20... since my family uses it regularly picking it up was a no-brainer for me.
Then again Nintendo managed to lose most of that karma gain by making the balance board package $10 more expensive.

I don't see anything in that commercial that's false, though. It's not even making any outrageous claims. Wii Fit can help you and your family keep fit. It does measure your BMI and help you improve, by giving you fitness tips and offering up different excercises to do. The only time weight loss is even mentioned is at the bottom of the screen, where it says: "Can help weight loss only with a calorie controlled diet."
When I think of weight loss gimmicks, I think of stuff like diet pill commercials. "You can keep eating twinkies 24/7, and our pills will help you lose weight, like Bob who lost 50 pounds in 5 days!" I don't see any of that in Wii Fit.
Oh no, it says that it can help you with your fitness!
That's a far cry from saying that Wii Fit makes you fit.
I don't see anything sinister here. This isn't a claim that it's a full featured fitness program that can completely replace all other forms of fitness and health.
It is indeed explicit about what this is doing. It is helping you keep fit. It is not making you fit.
If this is sinister then any and all forms of product(s) that are aimed at helping you stay fit are evil and "preying on fears of the masses." Gimme a break.
It'll help you keep fit much like a half hour walk will, or in the same way a fifteen minute boxing lesson with me will help you fight Mike Tyson.
Shall I link the Wii Fit thread in which literally dozens of people talk about how it'll help them get thin? Because they're certainly not discouraging that idea. Everything from the name, to the visuals, to the focus upon helping you measure your bmi (which is an awful, awful way of measuring health) is centred around it being fitness focused.
Yes it is better then literally doing nothing. But so would standing up whilst playing any other game, that doesn't mean I get to advertise such as helping you keep fit.

Not really. Because when you're standing up playing any other (traditional) game, you're just kinda standing there. Whereas with Wii Fit you're doing stuff that can work up a sweat.
And yes, the people who hope that it'll make them thin are absolutely Nintendo's fault, because they keep plastering HAI GUYS, WII FIT WILL MAKE YOU THIN!!! all over the place.
Oh wait, they don't.
In summary, Wii Fit is worse than zombie Hitler and Nintendo is an atrocity unto the Lord that must be scourged from the face of the Earth.
Best thread title ever. We salute you, fallen soldiers.
And the PS3 and Wii spikes continue to shrink down. Boy, if FFXIII and New SMB can't spark any sort of sales momentum, I really don't know what else could.
The PS3 is doomed in Japan! DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED for some reason!
Knee-jerk reactions aside, is it just me or is that the 360's worst week there in a couple of years? Between the PS3 and Wii's price cuts, it's just getting stomped.
Also, I approve of the thread title. I shall play Rock Band tonight in MZ's honor.
I knew that NeoElectronaut had to be his alt the damn day that he signed up.
Yeah, when making an alt to avoid a temp-ban you would think the guy would change his stated location and posting habits at least slightly so it wasn't violently obvious.
I'm sorry I can see that the campaign is blatantly aimed in a fashion to suggest keeping you fit and weight loss.
I don't understand why you CARE so much. At least people are getting interested in being healthy. I don't see what's wrong with that. I work up a sweat with 15 minutes of Wii Sports Boxing. I can see Wii Fit being a good part of a workout routine.
Also, RIP Captain Lou Albano. I hope you are doing the Mario in heaven now.

By that admission, I guess you also don't think following along and working out with a TV show/video also don't help you stay fit? Because it's basically the same thing.
Have you even Played the game?

WiiFit kicked my dog, and I thought Miyamoto loved doggies.
No, it's worse. Wii Fit + has a feature where you can weigh your dog by picking him/her up. So Wii Fit + is actually encouraging you to drop your dog from a great height, preferably from the top of a skyscraper. Oh sure, Nintendo doesn't actually say they want you to drop your dog from the top of a skyscraper in their ads, but that's absolutely implied.
I might start up a blog to track my dogs' weight over time. I need to find out how absurd this mode really is.
You know Nintendo only added that to satiate Miyamoto, as they also probably thought it was pretty absurd. But why argue against the guy to essentially saved gaming?
Oh and everyone knows that the only way to really lose weight is to fight farm animals.
By that admission, I guess you also don't think following along and working out with a TV show/video also don't help you stay fit? Because it's basically the same thing.
Have you even Played the game?
Yes, and I had to unlock longer exercises. What gives with that?
Those videos aren't exactly great either. Seriously though, I bemoaned how highly it was placing because it's symbolic of the obesity and ignorance of fitness (and I consider myself a novice in this regard) inherent to British/American society. And I don't like the advertising lies about such, yes this isn't bifadus digestivus, but it's only so much better.
And really, if this gets you fitter in any measurably way, stop posting on the forums and see a trainer of some description right now.

Personally, I've lost 17 lbs since I started playing Wii Fit, and I enjoy it a lot more than going to a gym.
EDIT: Beat'd by Dodge!

Second, wiifit alone shouldn't be your workout regime. This bike accessory idea though might have some potential.

Eh....I own a PS3, but I don't do the [email protected], or for that matter, anything else dealing with Home.
Stranger things have happened.

It's the same story. Either games are ruining our perception of fitness or ruining our perception of reality. Both are complete BS.
