So those who thought that Pokemon were on their way out, guess not. Pokemon Gold/Silver remakes sell 1.4 million in two days.
I can't wait till it's released here as I plan on grabbing them too. I've been wanting an updated Gold/Silver for a long time.
Itsz not something I've followed since Yellow religiously but the buzz has definitely worn off, I'd stake an unfounded claim that the people buying these games are largely people who were buying them back at Red/Blue.
They would make so much money if they made a Pokemon 3D console RPG it isn't funny. Even I'd buy a Wii for it. Of course I'd burn it afterwards.
I would say you're dead wrong. Many people that played Red/Blue when it came out are in College now. Most of the people I see playing Pokemon "in the wild" are ~12 years old or younger.
It's like children's books. They never go out of print. You know why? Because there's always another generation of kids to read them.
The marketing buzz may not be what it was in the original R/B/Y days, but the games themselves are more popular than ever.

It's exploitive either way, but people eat up remakes.
It doesn't matter which company remakes or repackages a game, people will gripe about it, but ultimately many of those same people will end up buying them.
Heck the Greatest Hits/Platinum Edition/Player's Choice were all based on repackaging old games to sell to new people. Nintendo is definitely one of the companies that use this method more than others, especially when it comes to remaking a classic of theirs for a new generation.
Of course this generation so far, Nintendo doesn't have a 'player's choice' deal, but I guess the closes thing they have is their 'New Play Control' series.
Another Madden? Another Call of Duty? More Halo? Another Guitar Hero even?
Oh but the same Pokemon in a new box? I am on that thing!
Who honestly complains about the amount of Call of Duty or Halo games? I've not seen it, here or otherwise.
Madden people used to complain about as a 'roster update', but I haven't even really seen that around here lately.
And Guitar Hero is ACTUALLY BEING EXPLOITED, in a negative sense. There have been like, what, 5 Guitar Hero's in the last 2 years? Didn't the press release for Activision actually say they were 'exploiting' the franchise?
Let's not ignore the fact that this isn't a simple re-packaging, either. It's the same story as G/S/C but with the graphics of Platinum. There's lots of new features/mechanics, etc.

Hahahahah, I get it! Because people have a double standard about Nintendo, right?
Oh, you.
There aren't many people who can get away with repackaging a game and selling it for full price.
The difference is that they do far more than just repackage most of their games. Usually it's a full blown project, and even their New Play Control series involves quite a bit of work to get them up and running properly with all that they add to them.
Plus three Metroids/one disc is more than worth the normal 50 dollar asking price.
Also Darleysam, not everyone gripes about a new (name franchise here), since sequels/remakes have proven to sell more and be a safer investment than a new IP. It's a fact of life for our hobby, and I don't see it going away ever with the cost of development nowadays.
It's why the DS seems to be the go to platform for new/innovative products, it's cheaper to test out a new IP that way.

He's not dense, he's just not that into Nintendo. :P
Also, people try and claim that Nintendo is the only company forgiven for remaking or rereleasing old games, when the sales numbers for CoD, GH, RB, R&C, GT, GTA, and any other acronymed series show that people are just ok with other companies doing this.
I think his point is, you don't see many of he forums xbots hungering for more gun/guitar related fun going 'another Mario/Zelda? Exploitation up ins'. Whereas the opposite it appears he's saying is true. Not to stick words in his mouth or anything, my interperation may be wrong.

Pretty much what Leitner said. Yes, I do actually see lots of people bemoaning another Call of Duty or Halo, but as has been ably demonstrated, if you complain about the same damned Pokemon being released again, you get mobbed.
Everyone releases sequels and exploits their franchises, but some get a much bigger pass than others. They just happen to be more popular.

Then I wish he would go ahead and say it, call it a rehash or exploitation, not muck up the forums with a retarded persecution complex.
Seriously it's just fine for people to not be into Nintendo, just as it's fine for people to not be into any other console/manufacturer/series. Go ahead and say what you're thinking if you sincerely believe it, just don't troll the forums. Have a discussion over whether a game is a rehash or not and you'll see points conceded on both sides because this is a reasonable place for discussion. Don't assume a foregone conclusion.

Citation needed? Even if people bemoan CoD or Halo, they get called on it, same for any other franchise.
The iTunes Store recently added a "top grossing" category to sort its top 25/50 apps in the App Store, and I guess Kotaku is going to compile weekly sales figures to see what games are selling the most. Note that they're cutting out productivity apps and such (like MobileNavigator and AppBox Pro). As of today's, here's what's poppin' on the U.S. store:
Why doesn't Nintendo go and learn how online games work...properly....and just make a Pokemon MMO and then buy the world 5 years later?
Yea, Pokemon would be highly successful as a MMO, it has all the necessary trappings for one.
And in a way Darley is right that Nintendo does get a pretty big pass for sticking to certain franchises for their new games/sequels/periodic remakes....but that is partially due to the fact that the product is always of very high quality.
New Mario/Zelda/Metroid comes out, people eat them up, and very rarely do critics have anything negetive to say about them because they have high production values, are of high quality, and are usually always fun to play. Even the weakest of the core Zelda/Mario games are of higher quality than top teir/AAA games made by other companies.
Why doesn't Nintendo go and learn how online games work...properly....and just make a Pokemon MMO and then buy the world 5 years later?
You can't make an MMO where kids can't talk to each other. It's impossible, and it seems Nintendo takes the Disney route. An image of being child friendly is very very important to them, one pedo and bang PR damage up the backside. Further as one of Biowares founders said (in regards to JRPGs but it applies equally well I think) "they have old men designing the games". Now this has in many ways certainly helped bring in a new audience. But it's absolutely toxic to developing and integrating the internet into with the wealth of opportunities it provides into your games.

I think Nintendo just plain doesn't care about online gaming. The Wii is all about having fun with your friends locally. That's what they are concentrating on. As for Pokemon, the creators have always said that the social aspect of trading in person has always been important to them. True, you can now trade online, but trading/battling in person is still encouraged. I don't think we will see an MMO anytime soon.
Whether this will negatively impact Nintendo in the future remains to be seen. They can be stubborn about things and it ends up hurting them (Carts vs. CDs is one example).

All debatable of course - there's a difference between technically sound with no bugs and great design, and what one would devote an afternoon to playing. A lot of people would play a buggier game if it meant they could shoot things or level up their warrior. And it's not like Nintendo's games are perfect, either.
I agree that high quality products do deserve a "free pass" for remakes/redesigns (assuming those products are also high quality). Why mess with great design, or with what sells? I might not play it but it's certainly sound business sense.

You're confusing sequel with different setitng/plot/characters/upgrades to remake featuring more pixels.

Yeah that what I was getting at. Nintendo got their console online but in the most over bearing parental way possible. If they got it working like any other social online gaming oriented set up then I would think a Pokemon MMO would be the end of us all except the guy in the corner with his arms crossed and shades on grumbling "teh kiddy Nintendo shit....:mumble mumble:"

Oh, it's definitely debatable, as whenever this stuff is discussed, it's all opinion.
I've just learned to accept the sequelitis as a part of this very expensive generation. In fact Ratchet & Clank is one series that I love. It has produced more sequels in the past several years than most companies accomplish, and they are all very samey in the way they play and general feel, but I love them to death. The only reason I want a PS3 is for the R&C games. :P

I think it's possible to make it more kid-friendly though. Take Wizard 101 for example, where users can talk to each other, but only by using dictionary words that are chosen by the developers. You could take that even a step further and do what Nintendo did with Brawl and let people pick from a list of pre-determined responses. The business model is there, if Nintendo would just take it.
I think Cameron's point also factors into it, though. They want the social aspect of trading and fighting real people, and if they want to keep with that ideal more than they want money, I guess I have to say "good for them." They may also not like the idea that if they develop and maintain a MMO, it limits any potential console/handheld releases they want in the future. Probably not, but you never know what executives are thinking.

Even then they get round the system. An article got posted here a while back about a guy in charge of designing an MMO for Disney. Every single method they tried got instantly circumvented by the test group. One memorable example being, using such a system a fourteen year old within five minutes pulled up "I want to put my big giraffe in your little bunny rabbit" or some such. And that was one of the least devious get arounds.* Disney ended up dropping it because of problems like this.
Also, I really really doubt that Nintendo would halt to do something such as this because of their ideals over cash. If they could do it, and decided that it was worth it to their corporation it'd happen in a shot. Hell, this is a company which runs 'love hotels'.
*at one point they had friends codes that let you just talk to each other. They then introduced furniture. What happened was that there developed a signal for 'lets swap codes' which would then be done by each person spelling them out with furniture. This spread like wildfire within a matter of days to the majority of the playerbase.
Actually the reason they're not doing a Pokemon MMO or even full console game isn't for reasons of protecting the kiddies, it's because of lead designers/producers saying "this particular game does not belong in this venue, it is not where our vision leads us." Which is really stupid.

I don't doubt an adolescent's ability and drive to create profanity out of anything imaginable, but it would be a start and Nintendo still gets to say they have a family-friendly atmosphere. Especially if parents can turn chat off and just allow the response selections. I mean, it's not like the players couldn't use IM or voice chat outside of the game, anyway. Hell, kill chat altogether in-game, since other facilities exist.

Well, love hotels would fit in with the social interaction ideal, wouldn't it? They know their market better than we do, so who knows their reasoning. It seems obvious that a Pokemon MMOG would do really well, but maybe they've run the numbers and decided it doesn't fit within their business plan. Maybe they don't want the risk of tarnishing their franchises' reputations, reducing future profits because people don't think they're "family-friendly" anymore. Or, maybe they're working on it right now. Or, as Sporky says, they don't think it fits in with what they want to do with Pokemon, which I agree seems a little silly given the game mechanics (fighting and trading with people all over the world).

Here is some more PR speak about the Wii pricecut. (That is obviously happening)
"We currently have no plans to cut the price of Wii. Current talk of price cuts is rumour and speculation. This is rumour and speculation as Nintendo have made no announcements on price. Furthermore this is most likely retailer led much in the same way retailers in the UK offer price promotions on our products." - Nintendo rep

Deny, deny, deny, deny, pricecut out of fucking nowhere is pretty much SOP. Otherwise there's lost sales while people wait.
I'm just wondering when it's going to happen, but I imagine "soon." The thing already prints money, I'm sure they'll still make a profit on the hardware at $200, and knocking fifty bucks off for the approaching holiday season is a nice big Fuck You to Microsoft and Sony. :P

That's it, I've decided I love this Kotick guy...if anything for his pure honesty.
"Today, we'll sell you for $100 a guitar. You might add a microphone or drums, you might buy two or three expansions packs, different types of music. Over the life of your ownership you'll probably buy around 25 additional song packs in digital downloads. So, what used to be a $50 sale is a $500 sale today." - Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick

Of course, this kind of thinking only applies to one genre of games (one that is beginning to see diminishing returns) and a plan that isn't strictly viable over the long run... Unless they decide that they have to make changes in gameplay that require new controllers everytime...
And let's not beat around the bush, except for pushing the hardware, HMX and Rock Band is using essentially the same model. But, not surprisingly, Kotick is a nozzle. Was the 'remove the fun from making games' posted in this thread yet?

I almost posted that also, but I think it already was. But think about it, his thoughts on adding extra crap for more money is being branched out via Tony Hawk.
Harmonix does use the same model, but at least we don't see them interviewing about how they are purposefully screwing their customers. I like Guitar Hero, but this guy is a total tool. What is he going to do when the bottom inevitabely falls out on music games?
Speaking at the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference in San Francisco yesterday, Kotick said "The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games."

Guitar for Call of Duty 6 indeed. :?
Well, it's not actually screwing the customer. It's a long used practice ('loss leader' is a peripheral part of it) to entice customer loyalty by continuing to provide stuff and concurrent accessories to go with it. Console makers have been doing it for decades...

As of today's, here's what's poppin' on the U.S. store:

Deny, deny, deny, deny, pricecut out of fucking nowhere is pretty much SOP. Otherwise there's lost sales while people wait.
I'm just wondering when it's going to happen, but I imagine "soon." The thing already prints money, I'm sure they'll still make a profit on the hardware at $200, and knocking fifty bucks off for the approaching holiday season is a nice big Fuck You to Microsoft and Sony. :P
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
Well, you did see the TRU scan in the OP, right? It's allegedly from the Sept. 27 flyer, and some sites are reporting Wal-Mart flyers also have a price cut "rollback" set for that timeframe, just no price confirmation.
I saw the scan, but didn't know the date. Thanks.

Guitar for Call of Duty 6 indeed. :?

I haven't seen it in here. I saw it on Kotaku and wondered if he had really said that. I mean, no one would say something like that, right? Right?

Well, it's not actually screwing the customer. It's a long used practice ('loss leader' is a peripheral part of it) to entice customer loyalty by continuing to provide stuff and concurrent accessories to go with it. Console makers have been doing it for decades...
Kotick is a real shithead, but let's not confuse the point about exactly why.
You're right actually, I worded that wrong. point is....like you said....he's a pure Ham Doctor, and I'll leave it at that. 8-)
