I have to agree with Prosp; if my job is something I truly love (like music) I could do it for ages and still love what I'm doing.

What would be your fantasy job?

Mine would have to be UFC Cage Fighter. Man, I would love to have that sort of athlethisism and say I punch people for a living. Also, I would have a very dainty hobby, like macrame or rose gardens.

Sonic, easier than you think. I will say the best way to kill your passion for something is to turn it into a job.

    i draw for a living
i have the best fucking job in the world.

it has been my passion for 12 years, and it still is, despite tons of shitty clients and two studio jobs which had me doing it all day everyday

Another protip: For oil and acrylic users, use exterior house paint instead of gesso. It's much cheaper. Comes in many-gallon containers at Home Depot. Two or three coats will do the trick.

i thought house paint doesn't have the binding effects of gesso? that's why store-bought canvases primed in titanium white instead of gesso are like painting on a cheese grater and are often quite loose.

to each his own, i suppose

actually my real fantasy job would be to work with birds of prey in an animal rehabilitation center
or any animals in such a place.

if i could do that, and freelance on the side for the rest of my life, i would be the happiest person on the planet.

...i suppose with my past degree in science almost being complete, this is probably more doable than i originally thought

Yes, "killing your passion" did sound a bit Harsh. I just go thru burn out periods and then something always happens to make it interesting again. I think it's a drawback in Sales. You get excited about a product and know that it belongs in a certain place, and when the customer doesn't share your enthusiasm it gets deflating. It's still by far the best job I've had and offers a lot of perks.

Yeah maybe this works fine for acrylic but this really isn't a good idea with oil. I mean, I don't even like half of the gessos I have used. This is a nice gesso tutorial if anyone is interested.

Silly me, I should have said that this is best used with something like medium density fiber board. The wood drinks the first layer in and then binds it. My bad.

Also, it definitely also works on paper. Perhaps not the best, but for rough or small stuff it's fine.

I don't see what the problem is. If you multiply the coefficient I gave by the size of your canvas in square inches you get the amount of time it takes to gesso-ify a canvas.
