Some new confirmations from a PCgamer article on L4D2. Highlights:
"There's boomer bile you can throw, mainly in the first campaign. It's an alternative to the pipe bomb"
"There's multiple pistols, including a magnum which is super-powerful up close"
Weapon modifiers such as laser sight can be found: "... let's you see where everyone is aiming [...] also helps your accuracy a bit"
On ammo-upgrades: "You've got ammo upgrades like incendiary ammo or explosive rounds, and you can carry that with you and decide when you want to play it". (I'm guessing you carry around the special ammo in ammo-packs, and can then use a little time to give your team a clip of incendiary/explosive ammo)
Not sure if this was all known already, but some of it was news to me! I didn't read the spoilered part of the article though, so might have missed something there.
I like the laser sight definitely. And the new pistols. I'll be happy to see where my teammates are aiming, whether they're actually shooting the tank or not, etc.
I hope that those laser sights are optional or based on proximity to your teammates. There's enough whining and crying in the game as it is, having a sightline on what everyone's shooting can really only add to it.

Well if it's a weapon modifier, then it's probably optional. Also, I don't understand why seeing where your team-mates are shooting is a bad thing. Unless you're talking about VS maybe, but then if it's optional that's pretty much moot anyway.
So I'm interested in Left 4 Dead 2. In fact, I think my Group Of Buddies and I are going to put our $50 towards it, rather than Modern Warfare 2 due to the no-dedicated-server nonsense.
Now, I'm wondering about these fancy melee weapons. Is there a third person view available? Like, if you pick up a chainsaw or a frying pan, can you make it so that you're viewing your character in the third person, sort of like Jedi Knight?
And second, have they implemented Dynamic Lightning for the flashlights? That is, can you see your teammate's flashlight shadows, if you configure your graphical settings appropriately? I always found it weird how my own flashlight was the only one that seemed to illuminate anything.

And, I can see the laser pointer being useful to point out objects on things. 'It's here <point>' will help speed things up.
The last thing I want is to be bitched out for not playing how anyone else wants me to play. A tool in which the major purpose is just that doesn't sit well with me. I'll be the first to agree within a group of friends, it's a non-factor (and likely a bonus).
However, a big part of the experience for most people is unfortunately playing with the masses. I hear enough "oh we failed because X did Y and not Z" where X is never the speaker and Y wasn't always to blame. Then there's the problem with most co-op games (in general); the "It's my team" and not "we're a team" issue. You've always got someone that takes control, and there's enough of those guys out there and demand perfection already without giving them a way to see that no, I was not going to put myself and anyone near me in danger to bail your ass out because we didn't march to your beat.
We've already got the tools to 'fix' whatever the laser sight is supposed to do by communicating. I can see a lot of potential grief arising from adding in a way to see everyone's sight, which concerns me.

I'm pretty sure it's not too hard to figure out who was the weakest link without laser sights. I don't like laser sights though and would prefer better flashlights since our survivors are starting to seem more like high-tech super soldiers than scavenging survivors.
I've played L4D1 servers with optional laser sights. Really, its not a big deal at all. There is usually so much going on that you don't care to notice what other people are aiming at. This reduces the lasers to a personal preference of whether or not you want a red dot lighting up your target, much like Resident Evil or Dead Space.
Now, I'm wondering about these fancy melee weapons. Is there a third person view available? Like, if you pick up a chainsaw or a frying pan, can you make it so that you're viewing your character in the third person, sort of like Jedi Knight?
You can do that right now with L4D1 with the right config settings. I use it all the time in vs for hunter pouncing. I can't imagine them removing it for L4D2.
I'm pretty sure it's not too hard to figure out who was the weakest link without laser sights.
I'm doing a poor job of explaining myself. It's not so much about the weakest link - in fact, I can see the laser sight benefiting them. It's more so that those that already complain that everyone else didn't act fast enough when they're pinned, smoked or otherwise unable to help themselves that X and Y didn't do good enough. That already happens. Heaven forbid I look around for that Boomer I hear while he's incapped. Eyes on the prize, dude.
...And, from my experience, everyone is more likely to be that guy when tools that enable that kind of rational are implemented.

That's [also] something I haven't been able to put into words but I've been feeling, as well. I have no doubt it'll be fun (I'm among you, oh hordes of pre-orderers), but the theme is feeling less and less like the material that undoubtedly inspired the series. Thankfully, for me personally, gameplay does trump thematics, but having both is always better.

I'm looking forward to the delicious irony of hitting a Boomer with one of these.
Quick question for those who have gotten to playtest the sequel: it's been said that the close combat weapons replace your pistols, so what happens when you get incapacitated? I'm assuming you simply drop the melee weapon and pull out your pistols like usual, but swatting/chopping zombie shins would be awesome.
So I'm interested in Left 4 Dead 2. In fact, I think my Group Of Buddies and I are going to put our $50 towards it, rather than Modern Warfare 2 due to the no-dedicated-server nonsense.

You'd probably be more interested in doing the 4 pack preorder that's on STEAM. Each game costs $33 to all 4 people. You just need to have one guy pay for it all and then gift it to the other people.
As for your questions:
2: There's no real third person mode available, atleast they haven't said so. But the original Left 4 Dead had a console command version you could do by typing "thirdperson" or "thirdpersonshoulder" into the console. I imagine they'll still have this in.
3.Probably not, though Valve have mentioned in the past when technology has reached the certain point where all computers could handle all 4 dynamic lights from all survivors they'd implement it in. They originally played around with this but found that it usually only worked well on really really high end machines which is why they took it out.

Gaming companies confuse me sometimes. :?
Put it this way, Crysis looked awesome on PC's when it was released, but had a tonne of functionality that would become usable when new generations of hardware came around.
It just ended up as "OLOL You need a $6,000,000 PC to run this game.", "Engine is crap and unoptimised", "Why does such an average looking game have such high specs" etc. etc.
Basically people would only whine about how crap the graphics are. It's not the fact that the graphics are bad, it would be the fact that they can't run it maxed and so it looks bad to them because they know that full dynamic lighting looks so much better.
It... sucks, but I can understand why they'd go with the decision to just cut it out and save on the idiot fanboys talking about how crappy the games visuals are because they don't understand how intensive something like that is.
Also melk, the hypothetical bind for thirdperson melee would be something like
bind 1 "slot1;thirdperson"
bind 2 "slot2;firstperson"
I think anyways. It would probably be better as a script though.

Had a few vs games tonight. Ended up with too many people trying to join and I think there ended up being a second group playing. Damn fine map for vs. It got a lot of praise and a lot of laughs at the poster (all Aussie crowd).
The only problem we encountered was on map 2 the second team didn't get tier 2s at all and the first team did.
Did you guys have the latest version? You can get it at flygabel4dcampaign.blogspot.com, rather than l4dmaps, which isn't accepting the upload for some reason. I fixed that bug and many others.
Yeah we were using the latest version. It only happened on our last play through as well. The weapons were on the top floor of the office building just after you get up the stair well. I can grab a screen of the spot if it would help.
Are you sure they just weren't in a different position for the second team? They can appear on the table at the top of the stairs, on the large table in the conference room, or on the rooftop of the apartment building.

There's actually a good reason for this though.
Say you have an awesome computer. Bob has a crackerjack toy he calls a computer. And the two of you are playing together.
You've got dynamic lights turned on, Bob has his turned off. Now you try to point something out in your flashlight beam. Maybe you see a hunter or something, or just an item, whatever. You can see your beam and bob's beam... but bob can only see his, not yours. This creates confusion, and the easiest way for them to not have to worry about players having different features available to them is to simply disable the option altogether, creating parity.
