So I'm interested in Left 4 Dead 2. In fact, I think my Group Of Buddies and I are going to put our $50 towards it, rather than Modern Warfare 2 due to the no-dedicated-server nonsense.
Now, I'm wondering about these fancy melee weapons. Is there a third person view available? Like, if you pick up a chainsaw or a frying pan, can you make it so that you're viewing your character in the third person, sort of like Jedi Knight?
And second, have they implemented Dynamic Lightning for the flashlights? That is, can you see your teammate's flashlight shadows, if you configure your graphical settings appropriately? I always found it weird how my own flashlight was the only one that seemed to illuminate anything.
You'd probably be more interested in doing the 4 pack preorder that's on STEAM. Each game costs $33 to all 4 people. You just need to have one guy pay for it all and then gift it to the other people.
As for your questions:
2: There's no real third person mode available, atleast they haven't said so. But the original Left 4 Dead had a console command version you could do by typing "thirdperson" or "thirdpersonshoulder" into the console. I imagine they'll still have this in.
3.Probably not, though Valve have mentioned in the past when technology has reached the certain point where all computers could handle all 4 dynamic lights from all survivors they'd implement it in. They originally played around with this but found that it usually only worked well on really really high end machines which is why they took it out.
Re: Limed stuff, what I don't get is why they don't just add an option in for this? I mean, I think my computer could handle it fine (it gets amazing FPS at maximum settings right now). You'd think they would at least have the option for PC Gamers right?
Gaming companies confuse me sometimes. :?
Put it this way, Crysis looked awesome on PC's when it was released, but had a tonne of functionality that would become usable when new generations of hardware came around.
It just ended up as "OLOL You need a $6,000,000 PC to run this game.", "Engine is crap and unoptimised", "Why does such an average looking game have such high specs" etc. etc.
Basically people would only whine about how crap the graphics are. It's not the fact that the graphics are bad, it would be the fact that they can't run it maxed and so it looks bad to them because they know that full dynamic lighting looks so much better.
It... sucks, but I can understand why they'd go with the decision to just cut it out and save on the idiot fanboys talking about how crappy the games visuals are because they don't understand how intensive something like that is.

There's actually a good reason for this though.
Say you have an awesome computer. Bob has a crackerjack toy he calls a computer. And the two of you are playing together.
You've got dynamic lights turned on, Bob has his turned off. Now you try to point something out in your flashlight beam. Maybe you see a hunter or something, or just an item, whatever. You can see your beam and bob's beam... but bob can only see his, not yours. This creates confusion, and the easiest way for them to not have to worry about players having different features available to them is to simply disable the option altogether, creating parity.
Oh, come on, that wouldn't cause much more confusion than normal. There's already a bunch of confusion when you call out "Pills over here" or whatever. "Look where I'm looking" becomes a bit easier if there's a big spotlight in front of you, but it's not that hard to just look at the other character and see where he's looking.
In plenty of other multiplayer games, graphical differences have been the source of some limited confusion and people have continued to do just fine. (WoW's spell effects and view distance, for example, have had a much bigger effect on gameplay, and yet 10 million players have somehow made it work.)

The confusion isn't in that Bob has to try to figure out where you are looking. The confusion comes from your trying to figure out why Bob has to try to figure out where you are looking. If you become used to playing with people that have dynamic lighting on, then play with those that don't, you may forget that it is an optional "feature", and instead start wondering if they've got their heads screwed on correctly, negatively affecting your perception of the player in a way that is undeserved.

The potential confusion caused by one player being able to see someone else's flashlight and another person not is extremely limited, and would be quickly remedied by a simple conversation. Keeping all those people who COULD run four flashlights at once in order to prevent this "confusion" seems extremely silly.
Good to hear they added a Revolver but sucks if it's just a pistol replacement, which would make it less effective than a primary. They could have just made it like a hunting rifle that's more accurate while moving but no zoom and a smaller clip.

Actually I'm glad it takes the pistol slot. The revolver is a rather shortrange weapon anyway, so I imagine it'll be good for either taking out a string of zombies or quickly killing a hunter or charger or something whenever you have a weak main. Now, my question is can we dual wield a revolver and some other pistol, or two revolvers, or is it one of those "high-powered so you carry only one" kind of weapons?
Now in L4D2 we’ve built on everything, but people playing L4D1 will still see changes and updates. The world is the world, though, so they’re all in that world together. We may see the two groups hook up, we may see other things happen, but what that is down the road and how that comes we don’t know.
In L4D2’s first campaign you’ll see some [storytelling elements] at CEDA’s headquarters.
Oh, sweet. I love Valve's utilization of passive storytelling, and exploring CEDA HQ is going to be ridiculously entertaining. I hope there's plenty of little hints and easter eggs scattered about like the x-ray of the spitter that was in Mercy Hospital.

This isn't where I first saw it mentioned, but it has pictures and explanation: linky.
It may have been an accidental coincidence, but I still think it's kind of neat that there's even a tenuous link.

woooahhh I remember that! I just figured it was a person or some craziness.
Plus, if I recall correctly, there was an x-ray of a hand with one of the fingers severed.

I got Left 4 Dead last year from a good deal amazon had around Thanksgiving (not Black Friday, but a few days later). For various reasons, I didn't actually start playing it with other people until last week. I've been playing with my girlfriend and two friends, but I feel kind of silly getting into it so close to the release of L4D2.
So far we've only played it for a couple of hours, but we're really enjoying it. I think I'm going to bring up the possibility of preordering the 4-pack with them this weekend. Seems like a good deal.

There's a ton of the hand ones, since it's the box art. Still a nice little "Oh, that's cool." moment while you're playing. Valve games tend to have a bunch of those.

Yea I figured, just thought the severed finger implied #2 coming out, seeing as it was the 2nd finger I believe.

The quality is pretty bad, as are the players, but the footage shows both some versus and some scavenge-mode. They switch to scavenge-mode and playing infected about halfway through.
I have one remaining copy from my 4 pack. PM me if you want to buy in.

Fuck if somebody else is doing a four pack I'll buy in. What is that about 34 bucks each?
I'm in, too. I'm the UK if that's where everyone is buying theirs, is it?
Alright, I might be up for setting up a paypal account for this. Count me in for now, I'll see if I can make one tomorrow. Unless you're happy being gifted with a game instead?

It actually works out, with Paypal fees, to the same price whether you buy it in the UK or the US. So it doesn't really matter. I was the only UK member of my four-man buying group, and I bought it for the rest and gifted it.
Scavenge mode challenges players to compete in round-based games of up to 8 players (Survivors vs. Infected). The Survivors must battle both the Infected and the clock as they collect gas cans to refuel a generator located in each map. Every can the Survivors pour into the generator scores their team a point and adds time to the clock.
On defense, the Infected team plays as the boss Infected (including the new Spitter, Jockey, and Charger). They must keep the Survivors from fueling the generator by attacking them, destroying the gas cans, or running out the clock. During a round, each team gets an opportunity to play both sides, with the round going to whichever team successfully delivers the most cans.
There's a bit of footage of it around, all of it with terrible players. I'm guessing it'll be fun and fast-paced, and make for a delightfully shorter L4D game than a normal versus. It might not be as replayable as versus though - we'll see.

Ah yes the S&W .500. When you've always resented your wrists but were afraid to cut them with a knife.
You're a funny man phobos, you know that right?

I'd be interested as well!

You know what would be awesome? If this sprayed bile even farther. People will learn to be cautious around Boomers again.
omg yes please
I'm also interested, in this group or another if this one's already full.
Edit: All gone, sorry!

I've been away from all L4D2 news, so yeah, what? Also, when do we pre-orderers get to play the beta, or whatever it is?
The 4-pack preorder is £80.99, how much is it in the US?

Pre-order demo is next Tuesday (the 27th), woooo!
If you haven't already, send PMs to elevature. That would take us to 4. I'd also be willing to buy the pack if something arises.
Demo on the 27th.
