So ever since I installed Windows 7 I've had high latency in games. Spicifically WoW and now Left4dead 2. It was higher then normal with Borderlands too. Any idea what could cause this?
Could it be downloading updates whilst you are gaming?
Anyone got a guide to the UAC? I think I want to just turn it off, but I gather that is not the correct thing to do?

If you have any sort of tech savy just go ahead and turn it off, imo.
Or not, since that's a potential security risk. If it's really bothering you, put it down to the second-lowest level. At least you'll have some protection from the marauding hordes of electronic rapists.
I am now going to apply for a job at Fox News.
Seriously, though, keep it on in some way. It's nowhere near as annoying as it was in Vista, and you're giving up a couple of seconds of your life maybe five, ten times a week for the sake of security. Of course, there'll be ways around it, but it's harder to come in through a 2cm square hole than an open door.

Anyone have problems with audio after waking Windows 7 from sleep? I am using my motherboard's built-in Via 1708S audio, and I assume this is probably driver-related, but every time I wake from sleep the left stereo channel is silent until I reboot. I believe I have the latest drivers installed.
Could also be hardware I suppose, but I don't want to have to RMA my motherboard, have to basically disassemble my computer. What a pain.
I have an old PCI Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS from another computer than I could transplant, but in my experience its Vista compatibility is sub-par.
Edit: nevermind, guess I fixed it by rolling back to an older driver version, unless this has anything to do with how long the computer has been asleep
Basically, if there are changes to system or program files or folders, a UAC dialogue will pop up asking you to authorise it. There are some other circumstances in which you'll get a dialogue. The general point is if a malicious program tries to fuck about with your system, you can stop it.
Technically, you can also let it do its thing, but it's really none of my business whether or not you're a masochist.
It basically prompts you when stuff requires administrator rights. Generally stuff like modifying system folders like Windows or Program Files, or when a program asks for it.
There's some pretty neat sandboxing stuff it does when programs with limited rights try to add files to protected folders (way simplified), where it redirects the program to a sandboxed folder, letting it run properly without the need to elevate. Something like that, anyway; it makes leaving UAC on worth the while, IMO.
EDIT: Wow, I overused "stuff" back there. I blame my phone's relatively small screen.
So I think I've tracked down my fuzzy screen woes to Windows not correctly detecting my screens native resolution and frequency.
Through the NVidia panel I've been able to bump up the frequency to 100Hz which I know that my screen supports and that's certainly sharpened up most of the text however other graphics and text are still fuzzy as fuck. I should be able to use the NVidia control panel to also explicitly set the resolution as well. Unfortunately I've fogotten what my screens native res is (altough I had it set to that under XP). So does anyone know either
A) A repository of tech specs for Relisys monitors (because the Relisys website is worse than useless and has no information on it whatsoever). How to find out what resolution my monitor was set to when I had XP installed (I've got the harddisk from my old computer as a usb drive).
Mass Effect for PC...runs great, except when people talk, or theres a cinematic playing, the audio doesnt sync up right, almost like the video is playing too fast or something. Its weird and difficult to explain. Messed with the audio settings, no dice, tried compatibility mode, no dice, ran fine on XP, reformatted win 7 awhile back from beta to final and no dice

I had a problem with the audio where it would get really quiet unless the source was doing loud things, to which it would sound perfectly normal, then drown out again during a lull.

Did you try installing the Sounds drivers again?
I dont think its driver related, problem occured on the RC and the retail 7 install (formatted HD between them), and swapping the sound card out for the onboard audio both times as well.
How fast is W7 starting for you guys? The RC started almost instantly, but the retail copy is much slower. There are a few seconds of a black screen before the password window pops up then several seconds of the 'Welcome' screen and a spinning cursor after I type my password. I don't think I've installed any different programs that would slow the startup.
Is startup slower for everyone? It is still much faster than XP but mildly annoying after how fast the RC started.
Necro-quoting myself from a couple of weeks ago. I got annoyed by the slow login again and googled it again for the first time since the official W7 release. Turns out the slow login/out is caused by setting the desktop background to a solid color. Resetting to a background picture fixed it. Login is nearly instant again. It is one of the weirdest mundane bugs I've ever seen.

The hell? That is weird. Thanks for posting, now I know to avoid setting the background to a solid color, something I almost certainly would have done.

So it looks like my fuzzy sceen isn't a Windows issue at all but a Nvidia GTX 260 issue. Lots of people have a similar problem and I noticed that the BIOS/startup console text is fuzzy as well.
Looks like I may need a new monitor, I'm going to try swapping with my girlfriends and see what happens.
Well, you don't have to use it for Hotmail. I explained it badly because I wasn't sure of the product name - Windows Live Calendar (duh, I could've guessed it and been right). Really, it's not integrated with Hotmail at all with the exception of a link in Hotmail to the calendar.
You can just Windows Live Mail for the calendar. Since you have a Windows Live account, it'll automatically sync your calendar.
Ah, well. You can do a one-way Google to WL sync by subscribing to the private iCal feed of your Google Calendar account in Windows Live Calendar. But that's one-way. As far as I know, you'd have to use Outlook to do a proper sync.
There's always Sunbird (or Lightning if you use Thunderbird). How'd you get things going between Google Calendar and Windows Calendar? Maybe there's something similar in WLM that'll let you get things going.
Don't even joke about that. Outlook Express is dead and has been for years. Windows Live Mail and the other Live Apps/Services are far better than Outlook Express ever was. The Live services do not share any of Outlook Express code, that program was dumped by MS. Good Ridance.
Earlier in the thread (or maybe a previous one), someone linked a site that will assemble a package of common programs you select for easy downloading and installation after a format.
My searching has failed... can anyone provide a link?
How do you exclude certain terms from a search bar search? I want to get a list of all the MP3s I have that aren't podcasts, but can't figure out how to exclude "podcast" from the results.
I have XP 32 bit and W7 64 bit dual booting from separate drives. I want to get rid of XP now that the last program I needed XP for is W7 compatible. Can I just format the XP drive, or will that cause problems since that drive shows up first in the BIOS? Is there anything special I need to do to get rid of the bootloader menu, or will it disappear automatically when W7 is the only choice?

Unless you're an insect.
Are your normal downloads any slower?

leaving it on the default setting is a lose/lose situation. some googling has shown that the default UAC setting vulnerability still has not been fixed. is this still true? maybe I didn't google hard enough.

I made a game, it has penguins in it. It's pay what you like on Gumroad.
Currently Ebaying Nothing at all but I might do in the future.

I KISS YOU!
You can try Paint.net, although I'm not sure if it's x64 or not. It should still run on a x64 version of windows.
I used it extensively in vista, it was nice for small stuff
And I surely don't want to use outlook express 7

Thanks a ton!
Windows Live Mail? It's a lot like Thunderbird only better in functionality & GUI.
That has to be one of the best things ever, ever.
