I have XP 32 bit and W7 64 bit dual booting from separate drives. I want to get rid of XP now that the last program I needed XP for is W7 compatible. Can I just format the XP drive, or will that cause problems since that drive shows up first in the BIOS? Is there anything special I need to do to get rid of the bootloader menu, or will it disappear automatically when W7 is the only choice?
Check which of the drives has boot files in its root. You might have to turn on "show invisible files" to find them.
If the Win7 drive has a ntldr file you can most likely format the other drive.
If not you can disconnect the XP drive (physical or in BIOS) and run the Win7 install DVD "Fix my stuff" button.
To change the bootloader menu, go to System Properties->Advanced->Startup and Recovery Setting and click off Time to display list of operating systems.
So I just installed 7 ultimate x64 on my new hard drive, and I am getting BSOD very shortly after boot up, even in safe mode.
I don't really know what to do. I'm downloading Ubuntu now. Going to set up a ubuntu partition, then see if I can diagnose what the problem is. Any suggestions for first steps?
Where are the temporary internet explorer files now? The folder I access through the Internet Options seems to only have the exact same objects in it whenever I look, I'm after the one with pics, downloads, pages stored in it.
Anybody know where I can get a hold of a iso for 7 Pro 32-bit? I downloaded the 64-bit version from digital river for my wifes computer before realizing I didn't want to go through the pain of backing up and reinstalling everything doing the 32->64 switch.
Anybody try the new Wacom tablets with Windows 7 yet? How well does the multitouch interface work? I'm really tempted on picking one up just to play around with web browsing. Also might finally teach myself how to draw too.

Ive heard theres complications with tablets and Win7. Be warned on this.
So, both me and my brother have Windows 7. Ever since we upgraded, I am no longer able to explore the drives, folders or files he shared. Though he can see mine without any issues...
I tried using both home and work groups. I also had the same issue when before he upgraded to Windows 7 and was using Vista (and I was using Windows 7).

Sounds like a firewall issue to me. What firewall are you using?
Never really understood the problems with networking, I've never had any problems with any version since ME.

Just a quick question out of curiosity: How many of you have DEP enabled? If you do, has it caused any issues? I'm tempted to turn it on for the security benefit it will impart, but some of the things I've read indicate it may cause conflicts or prevent older programs from running correctly. I'm uncertain if the security is worth the instability.
Edit: Uh, nevermind. Seems like it's on by default, and I'm an idiot. Haven't noticed much wrong with it, on the plus side.
I've just installed 7 64-bit on my PC. No problems so far. Coming from XP, this change is just sweet.
I ran into a huge slowdown previewing some pics on Explorer, but thats mainly cos those are 30GB (not 300GB) in size. Didn't crash like I thought it might.
I'm having issues getting homegroup setup on my network. My main desktop is setup to be the hosting PC and my laptop for the life of it just can't find any homegroup on the network no matter what my settings are. Both are wirelessly networked and I have a feeling that ultimately this is what is causing it but it really shouldn't.
The only suggestion help gives me is to make sure the damn times are correct on both PC's, which since windows uses atomic time to sync the shit, I don't see how that could possibly be an issue.
First step is to find the network IP addresses of both (look in Network and Sharing Center, click the name of the connection (probably "Wireless Network Connection"), then click Details. Or just open the command prompt and type "ipconfig").
Then go to each computer and check that you can ping that address. Then check that you can open \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx or whatever in Run. Failing the first indicates a connectivity issue, the second (likely) a firewall issue, and passing both indicates weird hijinx with homegroups and network locations. Hopefully it's not the third.

They are both static IP set, and I can get it where I can see the other computer and homegroups are automatically setup in the exception under firewall when activated... still nothing.
...Just ordered a new PC with with 7 with a 320GB drive, so it's a good upgrade. For me, anyway.
I'm not running it anymore but I have a 4gig HD on my junk parts shelf. I was running a PC on a 30gig until a month & a half ago when I upgraded it to 80gigs with Win7 RC-1. It's an old P4 box just used for the net.

Is there any way I can find out from Ubuntu? Could I upload the minidump files for someone here to have a look at?
Edit: They are here if that will work:

I'm not sure about doing it from within Ubuntu, but the way I'd go about it is to just boot Windows and note down the error message :P
This might be of some help in narrowing it down once you're able to get the message.
(I've no idea about the minidump stuff, sorry.)
Or should I just go back to Rainlander
Fortytwo's blog about fatherhood, life, and everything.
Could be a bad stick of RAM.
Those weird crashes are usually RAM.
See how many books I've read so far in 2010

Is there any way to make My Pictures folder look like this again?
The closest I can get is turning on the preview but it puts it to the side not the top.

Well the wife was using my PC to design this huge banner for her workplace, and saved everything on root so I accidentally clicked on it.
Hmmm... it's 30GB. Oops.:P
