I would have been a lot more psyched about the PvP had NCsoft not made the mistake of including a stealth class in the game.
Just thinking about getting insta-ganked by a bunch of lame assassins makes me cringe, and brings back some not-so-fond memories of WoW.
To be accurate, there are two stealth classes: Assassins and Rangers. Both have pretty serious weaknesses and are far from automatic insta-kill classes. Not the least of those weaknesses is that it is impossible to remain permanently stealthed like in WoW. You can hide for 40-50 seconds at a time and the cooldown is 1 minute. As soon as it wears off you show up a big red box on your enemy's radar.
Really I want to be 20 by the end of next week, and this game's story barring exceedingly strong cliches itself is actually pretty good and definitely keeps me interested for alot longer than I normally want to play. Also how the mess does the Balaur work once all the forts have been taken by player factions? Do they themselves launch raids on forts or do they just randomly switch sides for no good reason?
Both servers are on West coast time now. Elyos is on Yustiel and Asmodian is on Ariel. The Elyos has about 90 people from what I can tell and the Asmodians have a bit over 30.
So if I were to say I enjoyed the PVP/RVR aspects of DAOC/Warhammer and was looking forsomething similar to fill the void... would this be the game to look at? From what I've read on the abyss it sounds like it's worth looking into.
I see lots of comparisons to WOW but I'm not really interested in that, aside from I hated questing and did the mob grinding back before they killed it.

Yes, both servers are west coast time.
Also, could someone give me like mod powers on the guild forums or something (at least for the Witchaloks forums), and can I take over the Witchalok officers/classes/whatever lists? It'd be easier to update that way.

I have no idea why you'd want to play this game if you dislike pvp.
Because it looks amazing, has an interesting concept, and has at least two classes I'm interested in?
Besides, I said I dislike open PvP. I have no issues doing say a battleground where it's expected and everyone is more or less in the same level tier.
But I don't like a setup where someone can just walk up to you and swat you like a fly for no real reason other than "because they can."
Then you will definitely not like this game , unlike a PvP server lets say on WoW, where there really isn't any reason to actually PvP out in the world unless someone is getting a resource node you want . This game actually rewards you for ganking with abyss points , when you get ganked you will lose them as well so it's not just an inconvenience and maybe a long run back to your body you lose abyss points as well.
while it's usually not alot of AP you lose till you get higher ranked . gank squads will push you out of an area , you have to be on your guard every second and if you really dislike getting ganked and don't like ganking people yourself then probably not the game for you.
I don't mean to be condescending but the PvP in this game is rarely a fair fight where even teams of relatively the same level wait til the gates drop. It can be over pretty fast as well sometimes before you even know it's happening. I'm pretty surprised when I don't two shot people on my sorceror and it usually happens before they even know I am there and I'm usually long gone before the people in party with them can do anything about it.

No, I really appreciate the honesty. Thanks for being up front about it.
I noticed the spam right off the bat. It got annoying enough that I made Whispers into a separate chat tab. Is it less prominent in non-newbie zones?
dunno but I set myself as /anon whenever I log in now for that same reason

Everyone joining on Yustiel, type in "/join PAAion wang" when you sign on. That is the PAAion channel and you can get into direct contact with officers and everyone else that way. Invites will come quickly, and we won't be bogged down by trying to catch your posts with your character name on them and then trying to catch you online to invite you. Since you're the one trying to get into a Legion, you should be the one contacting us, either through the easy to use PAAion chat channel or through the Lists of Officers we maintain for this express purpose. You should also be taking a look at the PAA Aion Legion site that is hotlinked to on the Opening Post.
Just saying. We set all this up for a reason, so please use it.

PVP is open in higher levels, you can even go on raids into enemy territory.
Also you can buy regular versions of Aion and upgrade on the ncsoft site to CE status for $10, the difference between regular and CE Anyways, so no worries on that front.
Ah, thanks for that tidbit about the "upgrade."
So higher levels = open PvP? If it's anything like WoW's PvP servers, I'm afraid I'll have to pass. I do not enjoy being steamrolled by some higher-level player just because they felt like it.
Sadly, it's far more brutal then WoW. In the Abyss today I died to roving gank squads maybe 20 or so times, and put twice as many Asmos to the torch in a gank squad of my own. You'll have to find friends, be packing pots, and constantly be watching your radar, but that's why I'm in love with this game at the moment. Imagine if Stranglethorn was the place your whole server went to level from 25-endgame (yeah you can quest outside, but the XP, DP, and AP are soooo nice!) and enemy players had lots of quests to kill you and your NPCs and vice versa and were aptly rewarded for murdering you and you'll start to get the idea of what a madhouse the Abyss is (on Siel anyways). Most players aren't at the Abyss yet either, so I can't image how nutty it's going to be this weekend.
That makes me sad, then. I was so wanting to give this a try, but I truly dislike open PvP.
Guess I'll be passing after all.
This should be confirmed by others at higher level, but my impression is that you can skip the Abyss and just do PvE questing to cap. In fact I remember a dev saying you could "certainly" do that. However I don't know what end-game content there is that doesn't include PvP.
Oh, you can for sure. For us Spiritmasters though, the Abyss gives you more DP so that I can have my DP buff on 24/7 thus making it 'the place' to be for grinding. The mobs give nice XP there, and also give you the AP you need for rank and gear. It's best to mix the Abyss and the questing zones I find since I WANT to go in the Abyss but rarely am able to do my quests without it becoming a firefight. I tried doing an escort quest 5 times today, only thing was the Emos have the same kind of quest not even 15 feet away, so we ended up in this massive brawl for an hour rather then doing our quests. It was glorious, and none of the NPCs made it to the extraction point.
The 22+ zones are such a crush of people that I've sort of given up questing for now - if I have to run around for twenty minutes to wait for mobs to respawn, I'm better off just finding a camp and grinding.
Man. I spent the weekend with the GF and you guys passed me and hit 25 :P. I'll have to grind hard this afternoon I gues
But yeah I want to hit 25 and start doing some grouping in the Abyss with you guys and get some sweet xp, gear, pvp going on.

2 hour queues... and I just wanted to see if my auctions sold.
Ugh.
Ugh.
Well, they said they're planning on opening a new European realm "soon", so I guess I could see about rolling a new character there. Probably Asmo this time.

Even Theobomos? On Yustiel both channels are usually a wasteland.

So is Aion worth it compared to WoW or WAR? It looks fun, but I have received mixed messages regarding how good it is.

Those mixed messages come from people who are confused about what this game is about.
It is about three cultures that want to murder every single person who is not their culture. And the game reflects that. The game is beautiful visually. Everything in the game is polished, even the gameplay mechanics. The combat is not as easy as WoW since it also requires correct timing and killing takes longer, but you get more XP per kill so it evens out. What you also get is the feeling that you really have just killed a monster, hard to describe it otherwise. Crafting isn't a grind, it's more like gambling, and chances are you will NOT lose at it, but there's a chance you'll win big time. The Abyss is one giant battleground where you go when you feel like getting into the shit. And I kid you not. Go in there and it's PvP kill or be killed and every groups for mutual survival/hunting the enemy. Feel like NOT PvPing? Well, there is the less rewarding areas that are available, but why wouldn't you want to kill your hated enemy? And when you get the resources, you can siege a castle with magic technology, take it, and give your side world wide buffs. Has one side grown to influential? Enter the third race, the Balaur, who go attacking Castles and fortifications with their bad-ass Warp Ship and take them back to balance the game and wait for players to get their shit together to attack that fortress and take it back for the players.
This is a three sided war. That is what the game is. And it's streamlined to the point of making me forget it's past 3 a.m. every night when I pass out at the keyboard.

Death Machines that cause death and destruction while you DoT the hell out of something and/or fear / silence / melee silence / debuff / buff strip / other awesome stuff that is awesome.
What annoyed me about SM was that when I got into a group with another one in it, our dots kept canceling and I was so locked in to my earthdots rotation set up that it persisted throughout BC. I rolled a Sorc.
Also, I've populated my server's login area with characters just because I want to reserve some names and stuff and also because Scouts in the standing position look so badass. They're all like "Back the hell up OFF me, bitch! Jeez."

Well, I bought the game. For some reason the download client offered by the official site was busted, so I'm downloading via file planet right now. I'm planning on making an Asmodean, for obvious reasons.

I hit 24, and it is all pretty damn fabulous - but the crafting is a tad soul destroying. Work orders are not something I enjoy. At least queuing up 40 odd crafts is fine cause I can sod off and come back in 15 mins. Work orders require too much attention. Sigh.
Going through rifts to opposing space is utterly awesome. The initial ganks, and then fighting the roving defense force.... I cannot wait for my legion to get going on PvP.

That's why you go in groups. I've seen a ton of "White Wing hunting parties", which makes me gung-ho to get to 25 and see what it's all about.
