Camaro IROC Z28?

So I was discussing my friends car with him earlier, an '87 Camaro Z28.

I said something about "his IROC" and he said it wasn't an IROC it was a Z28. I thought Z28 was an option package of sorts.

Various web pages call the car the "IROC Z28" but I do know a fair share about those generations of Camaros and I know alot of their titles are tossed around thoughtlessly. He pointed out that they're all mistakes and his car manual it will never say the words IROC.

Even though I felt I had solid evidence and didn't believe him at all I'm starting to have doubts.
It doesn't help that even though there are pictures of cars with "IROC" on the side as well as "Z28" that there were alot of people who had these things painted on to raise the value of the car.

I can't find any official source to determine the real answer here.

For the most part the Z28 and IROC were two different option packages, if I remember correctly. They were combined for some years though.

There was an IROC-Z28 introduced in I think 1985. It may have run until 1990 or 1989 I dont exactly recall.

IIRC, in 1987 there was the base, LT, Z28, and IROC-Z28 (commonly called the IROC-Z), so he likely has the Z28. Use an online VIN decoder if you want to know for sure, but he's probably right.

It gets a smaller Mullet-score for not being an IROC, but it's still a 3rd-generation Camaro. So he only marries his cousin, not his sister. :P

When the IROC started in 1985, the IROC package was a suspension-and-sticker option you could get only if you already ordered the Z-28 as well. So, in 85-87, all IROCs were Z-28s but not all Z-28s were IROCs.

In 88 the IROC was it's own thing because the Z-28 was no more.

Im gonna be hurtful to myself but The (Italian Retard out Cruisin') edition doesn't look half bad. Especially compared to the Trans-Am of that Era. 10 years prior though....

i thought IROC only referred to the year(s) they used them for the race?

Hmm excellent, guess we'll run with a vin decoder just to be sure.

Seems to be a ton, I'd assume they'd all work the same unless someone has one to recommend?

My first car was a 350hp convertible red 1988 IROC Z28 with TPI!! That was a lot of car for a 20 year old 8-)

From what I was told IROC was just a label kinda like GT or Cobra just to show the car has extra oomph if you get my meaning.

350? Aftermarket stuff? I thought even the higher end 5.7s didn't even break 250.
Unless you meant it had the 350cc engine.

Being a Canucklehead I'll go with the CamaroSource.ca one.

    350ci I think you mean. 350cc is about a pop can. :P

I was told this though I never verified that it had 350hp. Basically the IROC Z28 had a Corvette engine and tires. Damn, that car was a beast!! Took it to 140mph on I-95.

Which basically makes that domestic rice. Wheat, rather. ;)

The Corvette of the day only made 250hp - they didn't crack 300 until the LT1 showed up in 1992. Still quick though.

    The 1988 IROC-Z Convertible had a 350ci engine with 230hp.
