Poetry doesn't have to be carrying a message. Poetry can do all sorts of things. Even when it does carry a message, it is no more "retarded" than writing a prose story to carry a message. If you think that way, why bother having a "message" at all in writing, besides straight-to-the-point academic essays?

    Because it'd be fucking boring.
If you don't have any sort of a message, why would you be writing anything?
This is what I'm talking about. The message isn't necessarily the most important thing. Why do you read a story? Do you read it for its message? I really think you don't. The message can add to it, and in some cases it can be the driving force of the story/poem/whatever, but there are other elements to it. Those other elements are why any form of writing besides technical writing exist.
And when you're talking about animal life on earth, oxygen isn't the most important thing; however, it's necessary.

Theme != message. Also, writing as a linguistic experiment is common and worthwhile.

Prose stories are lame as well. Anything with a meter is a chore to write. If you are writing something with no message, you shouldn't be writing it. Isn't this like day one stuff? Why write a poem if you aren't trying to tell someone something? Just because the words look pretty when put together in that particular fashion?

Have you ever read e. e. cummings' "[Anyone lived in a pretty how town]"? Christ, I love that poem.

I've yet to study poetry in my english class. I love writing. Poetry is gay. The theme is the message of the story. Don't try and say it's not. If the theme of Les Miserables is redemption, that's what the story is trying to get across. That redemption is possible, that people can change, etc, etc. Without this message, this theme, why the hell would you care about ValJean?

Hey guys, I know this really awesome poem. It goes like this:
Twenty - twenty - twenty four hours to go
    I wanna be sedated
    Nothing to do
    Nowhere to go
    I wanna be sedated

Just get me to the airport
And put me on a plane
Hurry hurry hurry before I go insane
    I can't control my fingers
    I can't control my brain
    Oh no oh ho

Twenty - twenty - twenty four hours to go
    I wanna be sedated
    Nothing to do
    Nowhere to go
    I wanna be sedated
Just put me in a wheelchair
And put me on a plane
Hurry hurry hurry before I go insane
    I can't control my fingers
    I can't control my brain
    Oh no oh ho
Twenty - twenty - twenty four hours to go
    I wanna be sedated
    Nothing to do
    Nowhere to go
    I wanna be sedated

Just put me in a wheelchair
    And get me to show
Hurry hurry hurry before I go loco
    I can't control my fingers
    I can't control my toes
    Oh no oh ho
Twenty - twenty - twenty four hours to go
    I wanna be sedated
    Nothing to do
    Nowhere to go
    I wanna be sedated

Just put me in a wheelchair
    And get me to show

Message is not the be all and end all, Kusu. Emerson had some very worthy messages, but he sucked as a poet. He wrote everything in bouncing iambs, was completely boring in his meter, and completely ignored form. Once the message is extricated, there is nothing to bring the reader back to the poem. Poetry needs to be entertainment, concerning our most vital function - language. It is about enjoying wrapping your mouth around the beauty of our most basic function. It is also about appreciating crafstmenship and construction.

God damn it, Kusu. This is like day one stuff.

Do not be dissin' on Emerson.

Also, L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poems didn't have a message or theme. Sure, the movement as a whole had a message, but the individual poems didn't. Same with serial poetry.

Unfortunately LANGUAGE poems and serial poems are bullshit and stupid, but it still disproves your point.

Basically what Kusu is saying is: Fuck verbal communication.
No, verbal communication is fine. Way to not even grasp what I'm saying. Poetry is not verbal communication, it is verbal communication limited by prose and meter.

Clearly Kusu has never read Poetic Meter & Poetic Form by Paul Fussell.

God is that an amazing book.

Fuck man, that book rules. I used it a lot when I wrote an essay about Pope and his metrics.

Yeah. I never appreciated Pope until I read it. Then you realize how amazing he is. Sure, he's stodgy and basically unimportant, but it's fun to see what he does with words and the perfect reason with which he constructs his poems.

Kusu, do you have any real reason for not liking poetry, that you would care to enumerate in some non-barbaric language?
