Homecoming had pretty decent combat iirc.

But it doesn't matter if you get the UFO ending for your first playthrough, and then use nothing but the ray gun afterwards.

The one problem I had with SH:Origins is that I got the damned UFO ending on my first playthrough. Too easy to get it in that game.

Not in my experience. It was such a PITA. I couldn't bring myself to do more than one playthrough.

Hopefully Downpour does endings right like SH1 or SH2. Give us a good variety of real endings available on our first playthrough, with bonus endings available on replays.

Don't force us to have the "good" ending on the first playthrough like SH3 and 0rigins.
Don't have only three endings total, like SH3 and 0rigins.
Don't forget to have any kind of joke/bonus ending like SH4.
Don't make Kill Count a criteria for endings like SH3 unless you have a very good reason. This is a Silent Hill game.
Don't allow the joke ending to be gotten on the first playthrough like Homecoming. Especially not as easy as Homecoming's was to get because a lot of people did get that their first time through.

The implication in Silent Hill 3 is:
The 'god' inside Heather is able to seep out enough energy to cause the immediate area (IE, the one Heather is in) to twist into the Otherworld. Once this effect has started, Claudia herself seems to have limited control and is able to command things to her will. That would explain why she was able to have a monster kill Harry but the scenery was otherwise unchanged.

Keep in mind, it's very much likely that she only had a very weak ability and the 'powers that be' were purposely helping her to get to Heather. The 'god' had no trouble killing her at the end of the game once she was no longer useful.

As for what Vincent said, it's fairly obvious he was just fucking with her. It's shown that all four of the people in the game can see the Otherworld and Douglas comments on encountering monsters. That being said, if the 'rules' follow over from Silent Hill 2, then it can be assumed that while Heather, Douglas and probably Vincent see monsters, that Claudia sees angels or some other form of 'good' creature. The way she talks it's heavily implied that what she sees is much different (and nicer) than what everyone else does.

Keep in mind, SH3 is probably the last SH game where I, personally, feel there was any sort of story/logic consistency. The games after that, for better or worse, all did their own thing and I think it's best to say that SH 1 and 3 (and probably 2) all share the same place, while everything else is loosely tied, at best.
    Silent Hill's monsters
"bleeding out" thanks to Heather's darker half, was always my second explanation for Harry's murder, after Heather basically hallucinating. But I had forgotten about Douglas seeing them too.
    So, I think you're right.
Vincent's line then would be pointing out that he, based on his beliefs, sees more nice things, maybe some sort of angels actually, rather than hellish monsters.
Yeah, I like yours more, and it's also in line with the background of SH1, where Alexa's suffering had taken over and shaped the whole town.
SH1, 2 and 3 are the only ones I consider sme sorta canon. The others, as you say, are tied onto those.
Silent Hill is the game that made me buy a Playstation2, just so that I could play it.

gah, i'm hating the nightmare world transitions in these new SH games. the whole disintegration thing is pretty excessive and not frightening at all.

now, you know which silent hill had awesome nightmare world transitions?

you guess it, the first one.

    remember when:
in the regular school, all the exploration and puzzle solving led you to find a key that opened the tower door. then when you went through the tower and opened the door on the other side, you just found yourself opening a door to the nightmare version of the school. that was a complete mind fuck and terrifying to boot.

the siren. The damned siren ... and then you didn't know how the world was going to change, and into what.
although, to be honest, I liked the movie (where they show the "transition" for the first time), with all of its flaws.

SH1 is the only SilHill story I bother to take seriously, like theorycrafting around the events/setting and such. SH2 was a good game but it's quite obvious the whole thing is the harrowing of one character's mind and him finding resolve (and thus could've taken place everywhere, it taking place in SH was a branding thing more or less); there's no elder gods invading and twisting our reality and I miss stuff like that.

Remember in SH1, in the nightmare sections, how there was used healing bottles ditched everywhere? The locals fought back... and they perished. Love shit like that!

Downpour is getting decent reviews so far. 7's. They're all saying it feels a lot more like the old ones at least as far as scares and style go. Which made me happy. But the combat blah blah yeah whatever I know.

So yeah. To me it's worth getting. I enjoyed Homecoming though. A good amount. It wasn't too scary but I really just liked it. So no doubt I'll like this'n.

Also come now people. Don't listen to IGN. I love how people always say to never listen to IGN because they always give low scores. Which they do. And I agree. But after seeing all the scores out for the game now (mainly 7's and an 8.) they go to the IGN score and say OH HERE WE GO IT GOT A 4.5 IT SUCKS GREAT. Come on people. Never listen to IGN. Don't look for reasons to hate just because you want to. I mean honestly you may as well not even be interested. You must know by now it isn't going to be what you used to love. It's changed. And I don't ever see it going back. Look at all the 7's and the 8 as well and read them and see what they all have in common. Reviews are subjective. Very opinionated. VERY,

Anyone know if the PC version of Homecoming supports a gamepad out of the box? I was gifted a copy over Steam during the holidays and I've felt guilty about not booting it up. I'm not expecting much out of it considering it's a port, but I still hope, you know?

I've heard mixed things, though I think there was a patch that may have helped some. Might as well install it and try.

Definitely going to have to restart this with the combat knocked back down to easy. I'm using a first aid kit after just about every other fight. Otherwise, the game is so far quite awesome.

Man I know IGN is kind of... bad sometimes, but 4.5 for Downpour? Really? That... that doesn't sound very good. :(

From what I've been seeing the reviews in general are pretty all over.

That doesn't mean you should ever believe IGN, positive review or no.

Oh, I know. But like it or not, IGN is a major gaming review site that a lot of people rely on to decide what game they'll buy with their tax return or whatever. A 4.5 rating may not be indicative of the quality of the game to folk who know better than to trust their opinion, but it's certainly not going to do it any favors in the sales/possibility for future games department.

That's dumb, turtles aren't scary and neither are beaches!

Also, turtles don't go on your head, they belong in the tub.

No, you see, I tie the turtles to a stick from the beach using palm fronds to create a crude bludgeon. I don't get too scared with horror games if I know I have a weapon close by.

I played about 3 hours of this last night. So far, it's been pretty good. It's the cleanest looking SH game and certainly the cleanest 360 3D game (I've been playing it strictly in 3D).

They've decided not to use the grain filter this time around and I'm a little disappointed with the sound. It's not quite as creepy even if I were to factor out the Korn title.

I'm not getting the feeling of despair like I was with Homecoming but it's still pretty early. Hopefully that changes as the story progresses.

Fighting is nice and clunky but you only have to fight once so far; you can run from most enemies and they won't pursue you once you get out of their zone.

Overall, not a bad effort. Not quite as good as SM but I won't make a final judgment until the end.

The graphics have aged pretty damn awfully. Kinda adds to the atmosphere though.

The gameplay and story should still be fine.

That's the problem right there. You need to play the Wii version. The controls completely change the game. The better visuals help also :) .

  • Skull2185Skull2185 Registered User regular
I didn't know Shattered Memories was on any other systems...

How old is the game? Was the Wii version a port of an older game... because you can't tell by looking at it.

The Wii version is the original game. The PS2 and PSP versions were both ported from it but they both suffered technically. The content is largely the same, though.

Shattered Memories is hands down my favourite third party title on the Wii, and easily top three for the series as well. It's certainly got flaws, but they're tiny blemishes on an otherwise excellent experience. The fact that it was a one-off still rubs me the wrong way

Yeah my girlfriend is using a healthpack pretty much after every fight. It's annoying. It's almost better to just avoid monsters altogether unless they're part of a puzzle room.

So joystiq posted a rather positive review on downpour. Once again the combat was one of the few complaints along with a certain bit about the ending. He did lauded the side quests system quiet a bit. The only thing that struck me as odd was he mentioned there was no NG+. Not sure the game exactly needs a NG+ (outside of opening up different endings that SHOULD NOT be available on a first play though) but, then again it seems like one of the series staples.

From the sounds of it I'll enjoy this game. Would have preferred a continuation in SMs gameplay style but can't complain they are returning to what made the series so unique in the first place. However, it'll have to wait till I finish off other games on my backlog.

  • LarsLars Registered User regular
Well, SH never really had NG+ in the sense that you keep all of your stuff.

I think it actually called them either Replays or Next Fear Mode depending on the game, and was basically the same except more items/costumes/endings could be obtained (ie. Laser Gun, Chainsaw, UFO ending, etc.) and maybe some extra options in the hidden menu. SH1 also increased the difficulty on you.

I don't really have a problem if it lacks the ability to restart the game with every weapon and all my ammo and stuff. I would still like beating the game to unlock extra items and endings on replays though.
