So I'm building a 64 bit laptop, and I'm choosing the OS. I'm going for Windows XP Professional, but need to choose between 32 bit or 64 bit.
32 bit should run without issue, but, well, I have a 64 bit processor, it'd be nice to take advantage of it, however driver and software support for Windows XP 64 seems shoddy at best.
Can anyone who has experience with both offer any advice? Should I bother getting XP64?
Unless you are going to be running 64-bit apps, there isn't much reason to use it. 32-bit apps can actually run a bit slower on the 64-bits Windows OSes, according to some MS reps I was talking to last week.
The driver support is also pretty weak at this point, IMO. We got Vista in for testing and I threw the 64-bit version on my home machine to try out remote access to our network, only to find out that my wireless PCI card doesn't have a built-in driver in Vista and the manufacturer hasn't released one yet either. So I was stuck without any ability to do anything useful, and had to reformat and reinstall the 32-bit version.
