First let me say that I love Zombies. I love them so much I managed to reference zombies 4 times in my wedding vows, and yes, I’m serious. Naturally when I saw the trailer for Zombieland I knew I would be seeing it as soon as I could. The only concerns I had were that a) the trailers seemed very campy, bordering slapstick, and b) could a zombie comedy compare with the brilliant “Shaun of the Dead” film.
Addressing my first concern; Virtually all the campy trailer stuff appears in the first 10-15 minutes of the film, in which we hear the narration of the main character explaining his rules as to how he was one of the only survivors after the zombies attacked. The set up for each scene and the super slow motion executions come off as beautiful in a really gross way, and less campy or silly. The crowd applauded as the lesson to each rule was revealed. I honestly can’t remember the last time I was in a theater where the crowd was so engaged in the film.
My second concern was with what the movie would offer as far as a story. Special effects are fun, but without good acting and a good story it’s worthless. Happily Zombieland has a lot to offer. Instead of focusing on a zombie outbreak, as many zombie stories do, this takes place after the world has basically ended and follows four survivors as they make their way to California to visit Pacific Playland, an amusement park the two girls visited when they were little girls. On the way the survivors encounter zombies and the audience is reminded of the rules to survival as they literally appear on the screen in fun ways. The rules include to “stay limber”, “cardio”, “beware bathrooms”, “double tap”, and more.
One of the best scenes in the movie revolves around Bill Murray. I won’t go into detail so it’s not spoiled, but when Mr. Murray comes into the movie there’s about 10 minutes of straight laughter. Its great to see Murray in a comical role like this and everyone leaving the theater was talking about how he stole the show (stay after the credits for a bonus Murray scene)
I went into the theater not knowing exactly what to expect, and left with a huge smile. I liked everything about the movie. Its gory, funny, entertaining, and has a surprising amount of heart. I recommend this to anyone who likes zombies and/or likes a good laugh.
