iMac saving strategy

I'm really really wanting an iMac. PCs have become too much of a money pit for me, and PC gaming just isn't what I do anymore. My mom has an Intel iMac and I fucking love it. I've been interested in Macs for a while since the later revisions of Mac OS X but I've stayed away because at the time I did gaming and more things that required Windows.

But lately I only turn my PC on to stream my iTunes library to my mom's iMac.

My PC is already dated (barely a year old, grr), if I were a gamer I'd be saving up to buy a new video card and an extra gig of RAM. I'd rather spend that money and a bit extra and buy a shiny new Intel Core 2 Duo iMac.

I also have an employee purchase program from the company I work at (which essentially saves you GST). The model I'm looking at is the 17" model with 1gb of RAM and the ATI Radeon x1600; which comes to $1,451 CAD after tax.

Using any kind of credit is not an option. For some reason, people with terrible credit can get credit cards and financing -- yet if you have just one outstanding payment on your student loan your name is mud.

I'm looking at being able to buy one in the next few months. I did figure out that if I can put away ~$370/month I can afford an iMac in four months. Maybe even less if Apple does a hardware refresh in that time and drops the price a bit; but that's wishful thinking on my part :)

I net about $730 each pay period. My rent is $300, I also pay $115 for student loans and an arbitrary sum between $50-$100 for my cell phone. That leaves me with one check that is mostly disposable. My overhead each pay period appears to be $150 for personal spending, including material purchases like DVDs or video games.

I'm pretty sure I'm stuck with squirreling away money each month; but if there are any other suggestions I'd be glad to hear them.

Do not feel trapped by the need to achieve anything, this way you achieve everything.

Oh, hey I'm making a game! Check it out: Dr. Weirdo!
