Looks like they're at work modding RE5 as well now. Mainly model / texture swaps, but RE5 didn't need the kind of help that RE4 did. Found what looks to be a mod that removes the crosshair from the PC version when you're using the mouse (so it's laser pointer only), so that looks cool.
RE4's PC port was such utter ass Capcom actually took offense and ported RE5 themselves
That's how bad it was
Pretty much this. When it first released, they didn't even have the lighting model in, so it looked like this:
They had to patch that in later. Also, Raoulduke20 is right. The numbers corresponded to the number of the button you were supposed to press, so "3 + 4" flashing up on screen could actually correspond to "control + shift" or something, which pretty much made QTE's ridiculous since you can't remember which button number is equated to what actual button.
Of course, once the game was modded, and I mean really modded, things became a lot better. The community did a pretty amazing job, complete high def texture packs for everything including the menus, button prompt swaps (for keyboard, xbox, and playstation controllers), new lighting models, someone even found a depth of field and motion blur shader.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and laser pointer colour changer, amongst other things. Mine's green.
Actually, and this is rather strange--the earlier European release did not have lighting effects, and required them to be patched in. The North American release did have them from installation (at least, most versions of the NA release, if not all of them).
Hm so is the PC version of 4 look pretty in motion with those mods?
I feel like I could be disappointed easily.
I had a GC (which I rented and beat it on) but sadly my Cube broke (I have so many consoles I can't believe the Cube of all things!) but now I have a spiffy computer and would love to get my RE4 on!
And yes I already have RE5 PC.
Also, speaking of RE5 - what is it they show during the loading? It loads so fast I never have the time to read anything there.

Its a timline of the RE story.
You can view it from the library option in the main menu.

Yeah it looks plenty pretty with the mods. The depth of field is admittedly a little hit-and-miss but you don't need to use that file (or you can simply turn it off if you want to keep the motion blur, which seems to work fine).
Really RE4 on the PC, once it's been modded, basically looks like RE4: HD edition. As long as you've got a gamepad you're fine (One more problem with the PC port of RE4 was that it didn't have mouse support. Yeah).

This is awesome, I'll keep an eye out for it on the cheap.
The mouse thing is pretty weak, but I have a million PS2 controllers and adapters.
Thanks for the info.
Actually one other problem with the game was the cutscenes now I remember it. They based the PC version off of the PS2 version, which didn't use in-engine cutscenes, but had pre-rendered ones instead. Those cutscenes were recorded in the pre-HD days, so they look pretty low res.
Someone filtered and cleaned up the cutscenes and posted files for them, and they do look a lot better if you download the (pretty large) files for it, but they won't look as good as the rest of the game.
Also also: Be aware that all the texture mod files and stuff are pretty big and take a while to download. After you've got them it's not too complicated to use them.
I could understand it for SF4, but if it's the cost I expect on RE5....fuck that, I don't care if it's the best version of the game.
Yeah if this is true, then I see no reason to pick up RE5 on the PC right now, unless they aren't planning on releasing the new version on PC as well (always a possibility). Given how the game was only release on the PC in September this makes even less sense, they may as well have just waited a bit longer and released the whole thing.

"Slayer" mode on console sound familiar?
In all fairness, this is what companies do, and is in no way limited to Capcom. I suppose they just tend to get away with it because we all have very rosy images of them.
If the RE5 update has new mercenaries stuff, then it will be hard to say no to. Especially if there's Hunk. And I miss Krauser. And Leon. Imagine if they added all the RE4 guys that would be so cool.
I could never get into RE5 mercs for some reason. I said to myself, if I wanna play mercs I'll load up RE4.
Part of the reason I didn't buy the game was that it didn't seem appealing. As lame as that sounds.
Playing as Jill, Sheva, Chris, or Wesker held little appeal to me compared to the cast of RE4s (like DeMon said)
I've Handcannoned' mercs (5*'d every map with every character) but still boot it up cause it's plan fun. Re5's mercs just seemed.... too different to me. I guess im in the camp that wanted more RE4 rather than RE5
I still think co-op was such a weird direction for them to go. Felt weird in RE for me. They should have kept RE5 singleplayer and maybe make the first game of the reboot co-op.
RE5 just isn't as good as RE4, it's as simple as that. RE4 is one of the best action/horror/hilarious b movie games ever made though, so it's not disrespecting RE5 that much making that claim.
Flashback Jill is rad though. The little I played of RE5 mercs before my 360 died, I was just content to run around kicking ass as her. Never unlocked Wesker though. I'm sure I would have gotten all the characters if I played co-op.
Guess I was playing a different game. Because my friend sitting next to me shooting not-zombies was a more enjoyable experience than playing RE4 by myself.
RE4 is an amazing experience, sure, but man... I love co-op.

What kind of prices are we talking about here?

Capcom-unity posted this in response to a comment.
And there is this posted on Joystiq:

Plus, you know, neckbreak.
Dont know about RE5, but Super Street Fighter 4 isnt going to be full priced.
Get your facts straight, son
*mumbles* They should have an ultimate mercenary mode with all the decent characters
Were you not here for the 20 billion different versions of Street Fighter 2 during the 16bit era?

It is, but none of the character combos seem that great. I mean compare to the potential comboing if you did in RE4
Any combo of
seems cooler than any duo of
I always wanted to try it, but I never actually wanted to pay for Xbox Live as I hardly ever used it when i did have it.
That's why I'm thinking of getting the new one on PS3. That is, if there are enough cool extras and it isn't too expensive.
Though co-op mercenaries does sound really fun.
Plus Jill looks retarded as a blond.
