Thats probably one of the best AGP graphics cards out there. Unfortuntely you say you cannot upgrade to PCI-E but if there is a small chance that there will be sometime down the road, I would really pounce on putting this money towards that. That's just me and Im a frugal fuck.

Personally, I wouldn't spend more than $100 on an AGP card but newegg has that card for $175 after rebate. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143046

Just to put thing into perspective - a 7800GS is only slightly faster than an X850XT PE. At $175 it's a pretty good deal though if it's a good idea depends on the rest of your AGP system, as some other part might restrict the performance; I believe you would need a CPU around 3200+ for Athlons or 3,2GHz for Nothwood Pentiums and 1GB of RAM.

btw. if your CPU is socket 754 or socket 939 you could get a PCI-E motherboard pretty cheaply, at $50-65, which would let you get an X1900GT - I believe it would be a bit faster than the 7800GS.
