strange WoW display issue

A few minutes ago I logged into World of Warcraft and saw this:

blackspotsWoW.jpg

No, I do not use addons.

I suspect the video card was overheating, which seems likely since my room tends to get hot. I turned on a fan and opened the door so the air could circulate, and after a few minutes it went away.

As for specs, the card is an NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX. I tried to download the latest driver for it but the file seems to be corrupted...so I'm currently trying it again...any suggestions as to what this was will help though.

I haven't played in quite a while but back in the day I raided with a couple people who had that issue, and in both cases it turned out to be a video card going bad.

Do you see that kind of thing in any other games?

I had the same issue, try cleaning out your case and checking the fan on the video card for anything stuck in there.

Gah...back when I first got the card I had some issues with it overheating but I downloaded a new driver which I thought fixed the issue...this blows.

*edit: last night was the first time I saw it do that and it was only fora few minutes. I don't suppose the card could be repaired?

*edit again: I used some canned air on the computer and blew what appears to have been a ton of dust out of the card/fan, but I don't have high hopes...

The only other thing I could suggest if it's not the video card (it probably is) is your RAM. That could potentially explain the corrupted download, as I've seen cases where bad RAM could corrupt data being read from any drives.

I see...well, last night was the first time I've had a corrupted download as well. I'm inclined to think it's just the video card...I'll probably bring it to a local store and have it looked at. I've only had the computer since February though, so I wonder if it was bad when I got it or other factors are involved...admittedly it shouldn't be in a hot room...

It's most definatly the video card. Exact same thing happened to me. Only when playing WoW. In my case it was an overheating issue.

same thing boned me out of my first ever bwl run. we cleared from start all the way to nef and this happened. i guess the fan had been off for a while. when it finally died it made the pc reboot and when i opened the case i actually got a 1st degree burn on my hand from the card.

Damn...well, I shifted some things around in my room so my computer would be next to the door and get cooler air from outside, plus I have a fan going, and it hasn't been so hot in my room so far, so we'll see if it happens again.
