Well game is installing on the 360. WHile I wait I started looking at Joe Madureira art on the google.
I didn't think much on Darksiders art other then I think its cool but seeing all the other stuff he's done I really dig it. Really fits comic book characters. They portray like a lot of action and movement while just being still.
Faces are kinda ape like. Keeps Spider-Man looking cool though.
Four hours in, just killed the first (real) boss. Really addictive and fun game, and all the Zelda comparisons are pretty app so far.
On neat thing I noticed is that if you do two normal moves with the sword, and on the third move use your scythe, it'll do the rend attack immediately.
Also (minor enemy and a boss spoiler)
I don't think it was very effective, but when you fight the plague monsters, you can hit them with the flying blade and pass their infection on to other enemies (though obviously if you hit them, you then get infected as well).
I also just found out you could wait for Tiamat to rush you before retaliating with a QTE. I never encountered it, because I was using the sword burst magic when I attacked her, and that + a couple sword swipes brought her down every time.
Also, Apocalyptic is indeed a tough difficulty. Dodging is your friend.
Surely you did not write a review after only 4 hours?
Works for most professional Reviewers.
Indeed, and I'm doing this for free. Hell at 4 hours I would have been finished the latest Halo or Call of Duty. Call it what you want - how about we go with "article".
Anywho, I'm enjoying the game and mournfully looking at a slow moving clock as I pine for home.
For the efficiency freaks out there (like me) who wonder whether it's faster to run or dash-run, I ran a little test to find out. On a patch of road, I ran from one point to another, using the center line as the test path. I did this three times to make sure it was accurate.
Running: ~14 seconds
Run-dashing: ~11 seconds
Not exact, but run-dashing is definitely a bit faster. I wasn't sure since he jolts forward and then pauses for a moment.
Otherwise, ~1.5 hours in. Fun so far. A bit mindless, but fun.
EDIT: Oh, the game just froze on me. How nice. If this becomes common, I will not be able to continue.
EDIT2: I've reloaded my save 4 times now. I have to run through a tunnel to get to the next area, and after gliding over two thermals to reach the other side of a pit, it freezes. Every time. Transfered the save from the hard drive to a memory unit (works in other games that give DRE messages), it still freezes. If this is happening to you, you are not alone.

Haha you are also one of those guys who plays Zelda 64 running side ways huh?
I guess I'm half way through the dungeon since I just got the item treasure. Loving it a lot. Its really fun and it all just oozes a cool style I like. I'm not too sure whats going on other then the basics but I guess the story is ok game wise.
Only thing I'm not too fond of is that in the beginning you get what I think are some pretty big items but there isn't much fanfare to them. Nothing major its just doesn't give that rewardish feeling.
I failed to mention that I'm playing on the 360. I've been reading a lot about screen tears and FPS drops, so I wonder if that is related. (It's not a DRE message, it's a hard freeze.)

No glowy chest with trumpets playing, you mean. ;-)
I'm loving this so far. The scythe is surprisingly fun, even though it isn't as powerful. The attack holding Y that knocks everything around you on its ass is great fun.

Well it would be neat if the chests were bigger and War kinda falls inside them all cute like and the pops out and says "TAA DAA! I found a map*wink*!" but its been kinda like "Oh look. Moving on."
I wasn't going to get the scythe but I found myself pressing Y occasionally thinking that I might um counter the attack. So I bought it to make Y do something.

Still haven't gotten the Scythe yet - I've been pumping all my souls into the Chaoseater. But once you get all the basic moves for it (square-beat-square combo, R1+forward+square move) it reveals itself to be 100% Devil May Cry 3.
You've got the stinger, you've got the time-delay combo that increases your AoE, you've got the rising slash, the air juggle and the helm splitter. It's blatant. But it also makes the combat a lot more fun, so I'm not complaining.
I remember when I bought Tales of Vesperia it came with a code for some future thing you had to wait for.
I should go check to see if that ever panned out...

Okay, I'm one of those gamers that even has trouble with Zelda puzzles. Like, I needed to use a guide for some of them in Twilight Princess. Are they the same here? Or are they simpler.

Fuck fuck fuck.
Apparently my preorder with gamestop didn't go through or they ran out or something, because my order hasn't come in and there's no record of me even making it. And yet they still have my account and credit card info they're still sending me e-mail about offers and newsletters and other crap.
I was really looking forwards to that book. This sucks. Hopefully it'll get released later on.
I heard some people say that normal might be too easy so I started my playthrough on Apocalyptic. That dashing thrust attack is a fucking godsend, especially when fighting those bigger enemies that seem to kill me in three hits.
Pretty good, but he doesn't get a whole lot of screen time it seems. Personally, I really like the voices for Vulgrim and Samael, the voice actors did a damn good job on them.

Shit that really is Mark Hamill? Man I thought that sounded an awful lot like him.
I've been enjoying this game quite a bit so far, but I absolutely hated the Tiamat boss fight. I'm playing on normal difficulty right now, but I plan on going for my platinum trophy which means I'll be playing again on Apocalypse mode at some point, and I shudder to think of what Tiamat will be like then.
The reason I hated it is that the Throw mechanics are a little clunky in several different ways. First of all, while you are in "aim mode" you cannot use the dash ability to juke incoming fireballs. Secondly, you cannot dash while holding a bomb. Thirdly, she is able to move and fire a fireball much more quickly than a player can throw a bomb and then line up a shot with the boomerang to hit a fire and the bomb at the same time.
It was an incredibly aggravating experience fighting her. I failed probably in the neighborhood of 10 times before I got her down. Thankfully once you ground her she's not that bad, but I used two and a half health bars just to bring her down. By the time she landed for good, I was in the red and I finished the fight with about a quarter of my final health bar remaining.

I finished her last night on apocalyptic and she isn't as bad as you expect. You actually can dash while in aim mode...just not while holding a bomb.

I think that's most people's reaction to 90% of that guy's voice work.
The fire spewing fat flesh abominations, is there an easy way to take these down other than dashing in and out incessantly? I'm honestly having more trouble with these guys than all the bosses so far, though part of that is impatience rather than incapabilities.

What's this about an art book code?
You can block their melee attacks. You can not block their AOE. Sadly, blocking melee will not work on all enemies, and its pretty much trial and error.
I heard some people say that normal might be too easy so I started my playthrough on Apocalyptic.
I might do another playthrough on Normal just to see if things change up at all or if the game really is as "slightly unbalanced" as I think it is. I will say there were several times I wish I had not started on Apocalyptic, and these are usually in the form of the marathon melee battles that will reset all the way to the beginning. Blargh.

What's this about an art book code?
If it's the smaller of the two "bigger" fire dudes, then try blocking the punches. It works flawlessly unless he's actually spitting fire or some shit. You can block his physical attacks easily and then return a flurry of attacks.
This game is awesome, it has a real feel of power to the combat, and the puzzles have all been really clever so far. I like how you always have the feeling that 'I could beat the crap out of this guy, if only all these little dudes would leave me the hell alone". It really gives the feel of clashing with this massive endless demon army.
I also love the demonic invasion in the intro, the way the world just totally falls to pieces in seconds with fire erupting out of the ground and everything.
I'm also vaguely intrigued by the plot, while not much time is spent expounding it it feels natural that War doesn't sit down to have long chats. The demons you are working with hate you, and War hates them, but knows they need his help, so when he says 'My reasons for helping you are my own' it doesn't feel like a story gap, but perfectly logical.
I also like the fact that the bosses speak! I was worried Tiamat would be mute.
For a game based on, well, the end of everything, the fact that Darksiders won't be receiving any DLC isn't exactly a revelation. But it's true -- Vigil Games creative director and famed comic book illustrator behind the game's visual style, Joe Madureira, confirmed in an interview with Eurogamer that DLC and multiplayer weren't part of the developer's plan, nor does it intend to tackle them post-launch.
"We were a new team building new tech and a new IP. We had our work cut out for us," Madureira explained when asked about both, adding, "Vigil has a very strong all-or-nothing mentality, and if we're not confident we can pull it off, we're not doing it. So we focused on making the most kick-ass single-player game possible." Not to say that multiplayer was never a possibility -- it was just a short-lived one: "We realized early on that we wouldn't be able to pull off the scope of game we wanted to and have it be multiplayer," he said.
Can I say I like that, not every game needs multiplayer in it and it's nice to buy a game these days and know your getting the full thing instead of being ripped off with the developer holding back material to charge you for it later.

My only disappointment so far is that the block button is also the dodge button. Too many times I want to block, but my thumb is resting slightly on the stick... so I dash into the punch.

Okay does this game have a demo?
Does anyone who owns it have anything bad to say about it?
I picked up Bayonetta instead of Darksiders last night and regret it immensely because I really don't liek Bayonetta. Will I dislike this one as well? Does it manage to rise above Todd McFarlane Disporportionate Tough Guys Talking Tough And Carrying Ridiculously Oversized Weaponry While Ripping Shit Up In An X-Treem Manner?

Camera angle is wonky at times, story isn't all that coherent or interesting (it suffices that the game world is large and engaging though), and I think combat, for the most part - is a bit of a button mashing bore (I shouldn't have to "make" it interesting, it should do that all on its own - and it doesn't).
With that said, I am unable to not finish the game. So there you go.
wait- did I just raise a big stink in D&D for nothing? you can still get a scythe weapon even without pre-ordering it? What are the differences between the two? anyone have pictures?

Tearing, oh god, the TEARING. It gave me a huge headache last night, but that could be because I was exhausted and getting over a cold - the tearing probably didn't help though.
Otherwise, I bought this game on a whim while I was at BestBuy with gift cards yesterday. So far it seems worth it if I can get over the tearing bothering me. I'm also wondering if turning on the 120Hz on my TV will help or not...
