Cantido, I don't have a case of lol RTS as you put it...I love RTS games, I've been playing them for years. C and C, Starcraft, Company of Heroes, the Age of Empires series, all fantastic games. The RTS segments in Brutal Legend simply weren't very good in my opinion, and it made me stop playing the game.
But back to Darksiders, I'm finding the combat much more fluid than I thought it would be after reading some of the reviews. It's surprisingly easy to chain from regular combos to special weapon combos to the final kill move. It's certainly not as deep as say, Bayonetta, but it's still quite fun.

The comboing in Darksiders is as far I go. DMC and GoW and I guess you can add the newish Spider-Man games too had too many combo button sequences to do cool stuff.
This game you either keep hitting the same button or hold it down or move the joystick around while pressing the attack. Either way I'm going to be doing some nice slashing.
So I keep singing "Darksiders!" to the tune of the early 90s comercial for the Crossfire board game. Can't find the Youtube of it though for the younger kids.

Yeah, the combos in this game are just as complex as combos need to be. If they were any more complicated, I'd just not use them and use the combos which behaved like these ones instead.
LT+LS back + X -> spam X gives a great aerial kill
X wait X wait X gives a great series of ground attacks
RB + X gives a massive DoT inflicting ground attack
Ninja Gaiden is easily the worst offender when it came to complicated/worthless combos. There'd be these bajillion hit combos that you simply would never pull off because the enemy would either counter/avoid out of it or be fucking dead way earlier in the combo.
God of war had this problem to a lesser extent. I found myself doing the same 1-2 combos for the entire game more or less. DMC(4) style bar forced me to mix things up enough to keep fights interesting though. Never felt it's combos were all that complicated it was really just the mixing of weapons/dodging and timing of certain things (just revs of your sword) that added complexity to it.
Brutal Legend is a fantastic RTS, and it's a damn shame more people don't give it a real chance. It's one of the freshest online experiences to come out in a long time.
Too many people played a couple of stage battles and abandoned the game before really understanding it or trying multiplater.
Does anyone know what the secret achievements for this game are offhand? The website for them is blocked where I work.
I'm on my way to the third dungeon and loving this game a lot. It probably helps that a Zelda game with actual fluid combat has to be pretty close to my perfect game.

Apparently one of them is "kill 666 demons", another is "unlock 150 treasure chests". That's all I know of :P
Yeah, this game just raised the bar for Zelda. Personally, I didn't care for Twilight Princess at all. It felt way too restrictive and it just wasn't as crisp as I would like. Miyamoto has his work cut out for him in the next real Zelda game.
Fluid combat, great graphics and character design, a "Navi" that isn't annoying as hell, and a pretty good story means this game will be setting the standard for adventure games to come.
That challenge room segment is kind of out of place and not really indicative of the rest of the game. I wish they had chosen a different area for the quick look.

I e-mailed Vigil studios and said "thanks for being awesome, Darksiders rocks." I've never done this before but it was cool to get a response from them within a few hours.

Yeah I agree. I'm really on the fence for this game, and would have liked more in the world.
I've just posted my review. I've spent a lot of time with the game, some 30 hours, and I'm now going back in on my proper Xbox Live Account as I enjoyed the first time on my review account so much.
Review in short: Not sure it's quite an RPG (as we were told over and over, being an RPG Site) but it's bloody good fun. It has RPG elements, and it's a good game, so I was more than happy to review it in the end.
I'd call it an adventure game, same as I'd call Zelda an adventure. Its a fantasy game with all the basic RPG elements stripped out. You don't have stats or traditional loot. Sure, you get items but they are an extension of your character.
The setting is the real world with extra supernatural shit thrown in. For example, there are these giant black thorns that grow out of the ground that are big and menacing and just a part of the scenery. There are also big walls of ice that block areas until you get an item to break the ice. There are also walls of fire that must be blown up to pass.
Imagine if you were playing Ocarina of Time, only instead of the Goron mountain, you have a train station. Or low-rise buildings. Or a big Times Square style area with meteors, demons, and angels.
The visuals are actually very good. I've enjoyed the level design quite a bit so far.
So, I'm sure I'm overlooking the obvious, but I do think I'm legitimately stuck and can't seem to figure out this puzzle.
It's in
Tiamat's Lair. I've got the Crossblade and it's the section where you have multiple red crystal obstructions and defused bombs. I've got it figured out up to the point where I can release the central platform and pull the lever to get it rotating, but after that, I'm not sure what to do. There's no torches on the side with the other red crystals, and it's too great a distance for the Crossblade to travel if I tried to target the flames from the middle. I've released one sword-statue, but not the other, nor have I stopped the lava flow blocking the third.
You know, I kind of went back and forth on this game a bit before it came out, had somewhat settled on no interest until I started reading the thread here after release. When people start throwing around terms of 'Zelda' and vibes of 'Soul Reaver', I kind of have to take notice.
I certainly hope these aren't being thrown about lightly.
I was almost thinking of picking up Bayonetta, but seeing as the PS3 version is... kind of inferior, I think I'd wait until I had an Xbox again before I got it.
I saw someone back a page or so comment on their impressions on the PS3 version of Darksiders, anyone else have any insight between the two versions at all? Because I'm kinda thinking of picking this up after work...
Consensus seems to be that the Darksiders PS3 game is better (no issues of screen tearing that I've heard of, which seems to plague the X360 version more).
Bayonetta's better on the X360 but only marginally so (better loading time, slightly better graphics). Really though, I'm playing the PS3 version and other than the loading time when you push start to pause the game, there's nothing to really call it inferior. If you had a side-by-side comparison of the two games running like they did with that Ghostbusters screenshot months ago, you might notice, but the action is moving so fast and the production in the game is so good, you probably wouldn't notice it otherwise.

Regardless, I think I'll be picking up Darksiders and give it a shot. Plus, how can you go wrong with Mark Hamill?
A pretty clever way to implement that sort of thing into the game aside from "oh hi here is a random challenge you can choose to do or not for no reason."
I went into this game expecting nothing, and damn I am impressed so far.
Game is a blast to play.

Might say a lot about my brawler skills, but I like the simplicity of the combat. Granted I've only played past the 'tutorial' part, but the one button combat and dodging is something I like. And removing QTE's is awesome. They have a place, IMO, in some games. This isn't one of them. If the combat is difficult, then QTE's fit. If the combat is simple, then QTE's don't.
Are there different finishing animations for the same creatures? I swear I saw 2 different ones for the demons and angels I was killing in the tutorial section. The tutorial boss was pretty fun too. Also, is there a block button?

There are indeed multiple finishing animations for the same creatures.
Also, yes, you can block. Simply hold right bumper whilst not moving....which I guess would be R1 on the PS3 if you're playing that one.

Blocking is very ineffective unless you do the block-counter move. Just a straight up block will get broken more often than not, and your character will get knocked about.

Awesome, the tutorial boss knocked a couple of my 'lives' off because of his scream attack, and I had no idea how to block. Is there only the one dodge type ability (where you quickly slide in the direction chosen)? I remember instructions for dodging came up, but I was busy fighting and missed reading it, and figured out the quick dash myself.

Still need to pick this up :[
How much is the RRP for these in the U.S.? It's £35-40 here.
Could be worse though (i.e. Australian prices)
edit: oops RRP is £50 here, but nobody is stupid enough to price games that high except high-street stores.
$120 AUD some stores attempt to charge here, and not special editions either.
If you're smart you go to JB Hi-Fi on release day and grab it for $80, I think that's a good price.
I'm thinking about picking up this game, might have to watch some trailers to make up my mind.

Yeah its not 666 Satan rules my butt or anything. Pretty colorful dude going against fancy demons.
One of the interviews said they didn't design the demons/angels to be scary/beautiful but just cool looking. I think they succeeded.

I wonder why that slipped through to begin with. It is not a huge deal, but people are picky about that sort of thing.
