I loved reading everyone's experiences with the dreamcast in it's 10th birthday thread, and I know it's not the SNES' birthday or anything, but it was my first real major system, and I want to hear everyone's opinions, experiences, and favorite games on the system. So grab your crystal pepsi, put away your pogs, and let's talk about the greatest system ever created, the Super Nintendo! *insert epic 90s style music*

If you need any help sparking your SNES memory, or you just want to be reminded of how awesome the SNES is, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjak4ByHnco

I guarantee it will make you want to go grab your SNES and play right now.

To start the discussion, I'll leave you with this question, What was the SNES' greatest, yet most under appreciated, game of all time?

By the way, this is awesome

Mario Paint was great, and I bet it was under-appreciated, though I have no proof. Being able to create pixel-art and sprites, animate them, and compose music to accompany them ON A CONSOLE was a pretty big deal over a decade ago, IMO.

I do have to agree the SNES was the most influential gaming system of my young life. SMW, Mario Kart, Zelda, FF3(6), Chrono Trigger, Mega Man X ...pretty much some of the best games of all time, and it's a shame we don't revisit the playstyle of these 2d gems as much as we could (and a reason why DS and PSP are such a boon).

I agree with Mario Paint. I never could make decent sounding music, though, so I always ended up playing the fly game.

Hmm... As far as being an influential system, it's a close tie between the NES and SNES for me.

Mario Paint was great, but I always hated the fact that I couldn't print out any art I made. It'd be great if they did kind of an updated version of Mario Paint on VC where you could save stuff to an SD card. Problem is, almost all the various elements of Mario Paint has been "reborn" and improved upon in other products - Flipnote Studio, for example.

Anyway, to return to the subject, I did have a lot of SNES games that I loved, mostly first-party titles - Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG, A Link to the Past, Earthbound, Sim City, and the Super GameBoy, which by extension allowed me to enjoy a bunch of GameBoy games. And I also loved FFIII(VI) and Chrono Trigger as well. I also played MegaMan X, but that's kinda where I also fell out of love with the MegaMan series. I only really enjoyed classic MegaMan, but I digress.

I guess upon reflection, I liked the NES just a little more than the SNES. I could have named off way more games. I still have my SNES. It's still in good condition. But all the games I really enjoyed on the SNES (with the glaring omittion of Earthbound) I've already rebought for current, more accessible systems.

As under appreciated games go, I'd have to give that one to Kirby's Dreamland 3. Didn't sell well, released way late in the systems life, and I never see anyone mention it.

There was a whole thread dedicated to the SNES a month or so back; I should know, since it was the first thread I ever posted in here. Plenty of obscure/underrated titles were mentioned in there.

i was in a used electronics place here in japan yesterday, and im not sure if i was misreading because i saw (the japanese version of) both final fantasy 6 and chrono trigger, in box, marked at two bucks a piece. And I could pick up a Super Famicom for about $30. Of course, my Japanese is crap, but I'm incredibly tempted to go back and pick those up, just to have them.

I loved my SNES. I remember selling it off, along with all my old RPGs, in order to afford a Playstation and a bunch of shit for it.

I promptly bought a new SNES about a year later. We were cleaning out my old Babbage's store and getting rid of stuff, and realized that our "display box" that was in the back of an SNES Killer Instinct bundle was actually the real deal. $40. Sold. Then I rebought all the RPGs.

It's still hooked to the TV in the bedroom.

All of the titles I loved for the SNES were the major ones that I learned of through TV commercials. Still, it kept me in some awesome games:

-UniRacers (the only Sonic clone to actually work)

-Donkey Kong Country (I always preferred the original.)

-Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past (still the best of the bunch, imho)

-Star Fox (breathtaking, for its time)

-Killer Instinct (once helped me win the heart of a fair maiden. I'm not kidding.) Started with Jago, migrated to Fulgore and Glacius before settling on Sabrewulf. Love that wulf.

    Oh, and

    -Mega Man X

I was more a SEGA man myself, the Master System and Megadrive being the primary consoles of my youth, but I did grab a SNES fairly late in the consoles lifetime almost exclusively because I wanted to play Zelda: A Link to the Past.

The box I got came with Starfox which was also fun and although I hadn't intended to buy any more games for it, I remember I picked up Donkey Kong Country and enjoyed the hell out of that too. But those were the only three games I ever played on the SNES - at least that I can remember. There may have more, but if so they're gone from my memories.

Those three games were all great though.

The SNES was my childhood console. Strangely though the N64 is my personal favourite console but the SNES is a very very close second. When I think about it I'm taken back to that magical period known as the 90's and it feels like there is sunlight in my belly. It makes me wish that I still had it... Oh wait, I do! I'm looking at it right now! Hurrah!!

I don't remember the characters too well, but I remember the dungeons being really well designed.

Dekar was awesome. The scene near the end when he returns after you thought he died..pure awesome.
You're right about the dungeons, full of excellent puzzles. It's a shame the battle system was kinda shallow though.

Watching that 10 minute video I'm reminded of the times game rentals went bad. I specifically remember renting Super Adventure Island and hating the look and feel of it from the beginning.

Being a fan of Blizzard's, should I try Blackthorne and Three Vikings?, I never ran across em as a youngster.

For some reason I have more nostalgia for the NES and the NES era than I do for the SNES. Who knows why. I was trying to pin down when I got the Super NES the other day, and figured out that it must have been Christmas of 1994. That's pretty late in the consoles' life, so in reality I only had the SNES for two years before I got an N64. I missed out on a lot of great games (mainly RPGs) because I simply wasn't into RPGs at that time in my life.

Reading old Nintendo Powers from the era is like some sort of strange strip. It starts innocently enough, and then you get to the Play it LOUD ads and everything just goes to hell.

Mine does as well. I'm guessing they switched the plastic over in early 1994 or so. If you didn't know, the yellow plastic is the result of a chemical reaction (with the air) in the plastic that Nintendo used. Some systems get completely yellowed while others have only one half get yellowed.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors, LOZ LTP, and Super Bomberman are the reason I am buying a SNES again. Those were so amazingly perfect in their execution. Three of the most happy memory games of all time for me.

I would love an HD remix of Zombies!

SNES games happen to still be some of my all-time favorites. Although the graphics have definitely improved with more modern systems, I think many of the SNES classics are more fun and just plain more enjoyable.
