I really like the new doppelganger thing they've got now, maybe they'll have it replace the slapping thing once they've run out.

Moustache Marshall was incredible. More doppelgangers please. It's similar to 30 Rock with the Generalissimo.

    "What? How could this be?!"
"Beats me, but it says it right here on this doctor's clipboard that doctors have"

It was an okay episode just "NOT GOOD ENOUGH!" *whippish!*

It took me a couple of minutes to understand what the whole fantasy thing was about. For some reason I was thinking that Marshall was using the death fantasy to make himself feel bad about cheating on Lily.

Yes. I remember some old comedy act (could be Tom Pappa) that went:
When men are single, they say "I wish I was married, I'd be getting laid EVERY NIGHT" and then when they are married they say "I wish I were single, I'd be getting laid EVERY NIGHT".

Wait .. if the first blind date was in 2002 ... why was Barney there? Didn't Ted meet Barney just prior to the series opening ... which was around 2005 to 2006 ... ish?

No, I'm pretty sure they go back in time to four years or so before the start of the series for Ted to meet Barney.

It sort of makes sense, too. When he first meets Barney, Ted has a full beard. In 2002 he's got the goatee, and by the show's pilot he's clean-shaven.

I'm often amazed at how well they keep to continuity for the flashbacks.

I feel confident that I've seen the idea of a married man having to fantasize about killing off his wife before fantasizing about another woman, and I'm pretty sure it was in American Dad.

It was still a good episode and I must agree that the doppleganger run may be better than slap bet.

If the very last line and shot of the series was Marshall slapping Barney then going to the camera "That's five!" then cutting to end credits I would be a very happy man.

And will they call him "_____-Barney", or "Larney"?

The first two or three episodes are basically some of the weakest in the series, and even they're pretty damn good.

The thing is tho ... looking back on all the episodes. Ted (and he is supposedly the main character) isn't what draws me to the show. And I have long given up on finding out who the mother is and that it might be interesting ... cause with this build up, you kind of expect a huge "Oh wow, its her?" moment, and I am fearing that the mother will be someone we've never seen before ...

Anyways ... what makes the show so awesome are the other four and their interaction. Barney/NPH alone is worth watching ... he is probably the most awesome character currently on TV ...

If you watch the season 4 gag reel, there's a bit between Jason Segel and NPH where they joke about how they'll pose for a photo for the TVGuide cover, and they'll just end up cutting Jason out and focusing on NPH. Sad but true.

If the writers killed off Ted without some bizarre universe ending grandfather-type paradox, I don't think too many people would care.

Some of the best sitcoms (what few there are) don't end up at all as they were intended. Urkel was supposed to be a one or two episode character. The premise of HIMYM was idiotic to begin with, except that it allows for some interesting storyline techniques. It works an ensemble comedy with a focus on NPH.

Stick with it. I tried watching it a couple times, and it didn't take. What finally did it was my wife wanting to watch it, thus forcing me to watch a whole bunch. It took me about halfway through the first season before I really got it.
