PS3 RPGs

edited September 2009 in Games and Technology
So, lately I've been having a craving for an epic RPG. "Spring 2010" is just too far away to wait for FFXIII, which will probably be the game I'm truly craving.

I have Oblivion and am waiting for the GOTY edition of Fallout 3 to drop, but in the meantime I'm looking for an epic game that's going to take around 50 hours to beat, has a very engaging story, and a unique battle system.

I've not really been keeping up with PS3 releases lately, so most RPGs have just kind of slipped by unnoticed. To my knowledge though, no really great ones have been released on the system.

I would actually prefer something very much "Final Fantasy-esque" than "Elder Scrolls-esque". I want the party of characters fighting monsters from time to time. Turned based battle system would be right up my alley, as well. I didn't care much for the FFXII battle system.

We can also use this thread to discuss RPGs in general, since I don't see a thread for it.

Have you played Valkyria Chronicles? If not you should.

Slim pickings otherwise I'm afraid. Eternal Sonata is somewhat competent I guess but most seem to find it a bit insipid.

Yeah, there's not much on the PS3 RPG-wise right now.
Demon's Souls and Valkyria Chronicles are the best available at the moment, neither of them seem to be what you're looking for though.

edit: However, they are both fantastic and you should play them anyway.

I have never seen so much truth in one limed phrase before.
Walmart has Valkyria Chronicles for $20, but if you can't find it there then just pay the $40 for it wherever else, it is 100% worth it.

If I left now I'd get fired. :(

The guy at Gamestop said this was probably the best RPG for PS3, but that it's hard to find. He says they rarely get copies anymore.

I'll keep an eye out for it, though.

As far as Enchanted Arms goes, I've heard bad things about it. If you think it's good, going to have to talk it up for me.

Is Eternal Sonata out yet? The guy at Gamestop said it is coming out soon.

Demon's Souls looks good, but not quite what I'm looking for. I'll probably pick it up, but when it's at a lower price. Atlus makes a lot of good games.

It's funny because most of the time whenever someone makes one of these "good PS3 games" threads, I always post the whole "GET VALKY CHRONICLES NOW" in big ol' red letters, because I'm kind of a douche
(but it's for a good cause! right?)

But seriously ryadic described valkyria chronicles, pretty much to a t, without knowing about it

It's insane when you think about it

Eternal Sonata sucks and is bad. Good music though

That Star Ocean game you might like though (did that come out on PS3)?

Edit: I'm told the official VC thread helps people want VC, and the OP is supposedly awesome (it got reported for it anyway)

Man, people really need to place a caveat with any Star Ocean 4 recommendation. The gameplay is all right, but my god is the story tedious high-school level writing and cast of characters are pretty much awful. A couple hours into the game, I was just skipping cutscenes and reading the synopsis for an idea of what I should be doing.

And so I'm not totally negative, I would say that when Tales of Vesperia comes out for the PS3, jump on that. I had a lot of fun with that and the main character was pretty likable. Hell it was nice to see a main character who would do the things I would in that kind of world.

I loved Star Ocean 2. One of my favorite games of all time. I was so pumped for Star Ocean 3 it was insane. The game sucked. It was terrible. Combat was bad and too difficult at times. Your party was fucking stupid and just stood there and died half the time. Story was also very bland and uninteresting (what little I saw). I got the strategy guide to help me get through it hoping it was going to get better. I played it for about 15 hours total (10 or so with the guide) and it didn't get better.

I highly doubt I'll like 4. I did like the original port to the PSP and the remake for 2 for PSP.

VC is pretty great, but not without its flaws. Still, they are trivial and don't really detract from the overall awesomeness of the game.

Although it's not exactly for the PS3, if you really want a traditional RPG fix you could pick up Wild Arms off the PSN if you've never played it. It's cheap and the first one was enjoyable. I can't speak to the rest of the series though.

I defy you to get a platinum trophy in Disgaea 3.

I'm really burnt out on strategy RPGs, really. After playing Tactics, Disgaea 1 and 2, and DnD Tactics on my PSP I think I'm going to need a 10 year break from the genre. I can't do another move/attack again. Curdles my stomach to think of it.

I never understood how anyone could think Star Ocean 3 had a bad battle system. It has one of the best one's (and most tactically fast paced) I've ever fucking seen still to date. It had it all: Stunlocks, Juggles, Guards that actually mean something and turn the tides of battle, attack combos, etc. And for the record, I was pissed that they took out MP kills in SO4 even with the additions to its battle system (Blidesides, attacking in the middle of jumps, etc).

And the AI was pretty decent in you actually leveled up their AI traits.

The story was love it or hate it though. The plot twist is a great sci-fi conversion of a very common fantasy trope which works for some and doesn't work for others.

    Yeah!!!

    Yeah!

Fighting things was so pleasant. And every character (maybe not casters...) played in a different interesting way, and you could customize each to different things even past that.
And the AI was pretty decent in you actually leveled up their AI traits.

The story was love it or hate it though. The plot twist is a great sci-fi conversion of a very common fantasy trope which works for some and doesn't work for others.

Not quite sure I'm completely on board with this. The AI is reasonably competent most of the time if you set them up right, but it was still a pretty cumbersome and inelegant system. Like, you were actually better off just not touching some of the AI Level Enhancement things, sometimes.

For story I pretty much hold it around the same area as Tales games. Which means it's pretty terrible. I think with both series, the best you can really hope for is to just have some characters you can like to some degree, and I generally think both do. Honestly, aside from Sophia and Fayt, I thought Star Ocean 3's were all pretty passable. And even those two aren't even really any worse than the average terrible main couple in a Tales/Star Ocean game.

But really, MP death was so awesome.

I didn't get a chance to play Valkyria Chronicles demo last night. I did download it... again. I do know that I played the demo before and I did actually enjoy it. It is a strategy RPG at heart and it's different from any I've ever seen. However, I don't know if I can handle it. I'll play the demo tonight and see. I also don't like the idea of guns in my RPG. That could just be stubbornness on my part, though.

I did download the demo to Eternal Sonata which I downloaded once before but I don't remember playing at all.
