I preordered this the other day. In my opinion, removal of dedicated servers does not warrant a boycott. That's retarded. I think that everyone is really overreacting to this. It's not like they cut out half the game.
For some of us, they cut out 90% of the game
I enjoy playing on 48 player servers.
I guess now I will be limited to about 12 or 16 thanks to playing on Billy's crappy comcast connection while his sister downstairs downloads Jonas Brothers music on their wifi connection. At the same time of course is the fact that Billy's got a zero ping connection while we all have random variable pings.
So, I'm curious.. anyone here work at a game shop? Have they seen a dip in pre-orders or cancellations?
Chris Remo (I think?) from Idle Thumbs mentioned in their last podcast that he'd heard from multiple people at GameStop that the number of pre-order cancellations had been pretty noticeable.
But I imagine two or three cancellations for the same game in the same day would be noticeable, so I doubt it's really a big deal.

I like the idea of DLC, I do not like the idea of locking out user generated content.
Same. If IW wants to charge for map packs... that's their prerogative. Just because those things were free in the past doesn't mean that they can't charge for them now.
I just don't' understand why they didn't take the middleground. Setup IWNet and let people jump into peer-to-peer quick matches if they want OR hop on a dedicated server. Let people download mods/maps OR they can just play on vanilla servers/peer-to-peer matches.
They're probably not terribly concerned about disappointing fans - they might sense the franchise drawing to a close, and are shifting focus into annual sales of Guitar Hero + DLC.
Heh IW Guitar Hero would be interesting.

CoD drawing to a close? It's going to sell a shit ton, and they know it.

Corporate madden formula for maximum money milking.
If something doesn't "work" it tends to be "broken".
Not to keep this shit going, but a scratched record does work, it isn't broken. It is damaged. I have plenty of scratched lps and I just manually skip the damage so I can listen to the rest of the album.

If the whole boycott does manage to make a sizable dent in sales (which I doubt it will but still), I wonder, if someone asks IW/Activision in an interview about it later, will they just say "Yeah it's because of piracy that our PC sales weren't as high as we expected them to be"? :rotate:

I would be absolutely staggered if they didn't blame piracy.
Honestly I am expecting them to blame piracy in some fashion no matter how it does.
"Oh yeah it did ok, but we think it would have done a lot better if so many people didn't pirate it. I mean we only had half the sales on PC that we did on consoles."
I've been reading the multiplayer map spoilers/strategies on mw2blog. Estate in particular. The dire need of editing shook me to my core. Stay away, Tycho.

I wonder if they'll attribute the pre-order cancellations to it as well. "They're probably deciding to pirate it instead!" Because y'know, it's not possible for these companies to make absolutely horrid business decisions.

I'm sure it's been more or less said here but he's my final take on the situation.
If they really were aiming for making things easier for the casual demographic, they could've done so in a way that didn't gimp the existing demographic (the total nerd who loves FPS games and probably know what they're doing with a PC). You introduce tools and shortcuts. This whole situation is the removal of a function that has been in place for a decade, and it's not even an out-dated function. It's a function that an existing market has come to expect from all products on that medium, the PC, and I guess now is the time where it has been taken for granted.
Unfortunately it's quite clear that making things easier for the casual gamer isn't the goal behind this. I saw the quote Robert whats-his-ass made, especially the bit regarding establishing servers to play on. Not everyone has to know that, nor is it a difficult process in the times we live in anyway.
It's a poorly defended decision that was made in the interest of making the most bang for their buck. The PC medium being restricted in this way means the company makes the call on content and when the official server support for the game dies, forcing people to buy the next product in the series.
And that is a bad thing, because newer isn't always better.
Edit - And I've never played Modern Warfare and only had a slight tinge of interest in MW2. Which is kinda gone now unfortunately.

Circular logic is what anti-piracy measures rely on.
Only thing I'll agree on with the PA post is that online petitions are dumb. It'd be much more of an impact if all those 150,000 people bought some other game and mailed the receipt to IW with a letter saying this is what they chose to buy instead of MW2.

Petitions for most things are dumb, but given what industry we're talking about, the internet is something they should pay attention to. Remember the fiasco with Blizzard and the no-LAN thing? They saw the reaction and changed it around so that LAN would be available with one condition. Blizzard kept their eyes open to what people demanded.
IW has the potential to do the same. "Oh shit, people REALLY don't like this. Maybe we should try to compromise." I fucking doubt it.

Here's the thing: I doubt IW had any say in the matter. This is so beyond the pale uncharacteristic of them that one cannot help but feel the hand of Kotick behind it.
Gamers can wail and petition all they want, but Activision doesn't care. IW may care, but Activision is the money pile that lets IW continue to exist.

Really, you'd think all the game companies behind Activision would have jumped ship by this point. Oh well, suppose there's only so many people willing to buy game companies in general?
I think if IW was opposed to Activision, they would have jumped ship a long time ago. They can make snarky comments about things like sharing the series with Treyarch, but at the end of the day they value money more than independence.

*Shrugs* True enough, but I meant that when the contract expired they would have gone and sought another publisher.
Maybe. I imagine they haven't been set in stone for the better part of a decade, though. And they still would have entered into them willingly in the first place.
I mean, people love to hate Activision, but it's not like IW has no say in what they do.

Nope. Although most of the pre-orders were for the prestige edition/console standard edition.
But this would make sense, not cents
