I felt I should give everyone good news as we could all use it after the recent news.
I will have a COD:MW2 edition Xbox 360 waiting for me on release day courtesy of the girlfriend. Early Christmas, or so I am to understand. So do not worry, all is well.
Now the bad news, I have to figure out how to out do this awesomeness for her upcoming birthday and Christmas.

- Quasi-sensical military Tom Clancy plot - Tight pacing and level design - Some re-visitation of the sort of brilliant level design that brought us Ghillies in the Mist
The plot was as generic as it got. "Evil Russians and Arabs kill them oh and the Russians gave the Arabs some guns so they're connected hey suddenly a nuke and everyone important dies".
Also, Ghillies in the Mist? I too like scripted sections that kill you if you deviate slightly.
And whoever designed No Fighting in the War Room? I want their heads on a fucking pike.
If you hate tightly scripted missions, why are you playing a series renowned for its tightly scripted missions?
Modern Warfare's single player had some great moments (virtually all of them outside the normal fps gameplay) but with all the scripting and linearity it never felt worth going back to after doing it once. Once the scripted moments lose their impact all you have left is the parts that hilight the flaws of the game, such as infinite spawning enemies.
The multiplayer was always the big draw of the game.
I guess it depends on how long you can go before you get tired of the same old thing. This is the same shit we had in the medal of honor series only more polished. Even if you want to buy this for $60.00 for the sp only, you're still not getting a bargain for your money.
Personally I didnt finish the sp campaign, i kept thinkin' "been there, done that".

hell i think I played through CoD4 SP some 5 times
and that's full playthroughs with god knows how many replays of my favorite parts like Bog, shock and awe and the last 2 missions
CoD4 is still the best SP game I have ever played (and I mean this overall not just for fps, in the fps only department it's so far beyond everything else I played it's not even funy)
I see you've never played any of the HL2 episodes?

Its like Activision has a shill bot algorithm that spreads ignorance in order to perpetuate itself through sales.
Its like all other FPS have never existed or people's memories are so fantastically short they can barely remember who they are.
I feel Tycho should shut the fuck up about things he doesn't know anything about. He's defending the piracy point, when it wasn't even ever made by Activision or IW concerning dedicated servers and is completely false.

Or he's in Casandra's shoes and predicted this shit and no one listend.
Not at all. I just think it's incredibly dumb to say someone is wrong or they must be forgetting one of your favorite games if they prefer another. I loved COD4's campaign, quite a bit. I can't think of another FPS off the top of my head that had a single-player campaign that I prefer. But apparently it's bad to prefer that over Half-Life 2, a game that I found incredibly boring from start to finish (and I did finish it in the hopes that I would like it...it feels like one of those games I have to like, almost).
I see you've never played any of the HL2 episodes?
I played HL2, stoped at the part where you had to drive through that landscape with aliens poping out at points without that hammer thing, after the very very crappy driving section with that boat thingy I couldn't stand another crappy driving section, HL2 ranks in my books as one of the most overrated games, the gunplay feelt weak and like said the driving part was downright awfull and boring, CoD4 was short, but fun the whole 100% of it
He must have went right from Madden to CoD4 or his past experiences is like Goldeneye 007 (actually wait, Goldeneye's singleplayer was awesome).
To be honest, I prefer COD to Half life in terms of intense action.
But Half life is my favorite FPS in terms of story.
It's kind of dificult comparing two vastly different FPS games, and I don't think it should be done.
It's like comparing Forza to Ridge Racer, you just cant.

This pretty much sums up my feelings. HL2 was tedious, and controls were ancient. COD4's control scheme is the best I've ever used. It just 'feels' right. Very similar to the real deal.

What does the control scheme have over counter-strike?
I really liked CoD4's single player, more for the narrative than the actual game play though. I don't think I'd crown it "my favorite fps ever" but I wouldn't mind if someone else gave it that honor as there favorite FPS.
I do think it's silly to say it's "so far beyond every other fps" unless you're pickings are very slim to begin with.
HL2's boat driving section at the beginning is the only time I have gotten motion sickness. Not just in a game but I mean ever. I tried so many times but just could not handle it. But really it and CoD4 were completely different types of FPS
Guys, you're pretty much fighting a losing battle if you're going into the Call of Duty thread and then arguing as to which FPS was better.
Just saying. It was largely obvious where the audience was beforehand. May as well go into the Steam thread and talk about how idiotic Valve are for what they've done to the Half-Life franchise to date.

I got a little iffy playing Prey and walking up walls and shit. Which is odd because I was perfectly fine when I played Alien versus Predator and did more or less the same thing.

What does the control scheme have over counter-strike?
A semblance of reality? It's hard to put into words, the gun just feels like an actual gun with the recoil, red dot sights, etc. I was at the range on friday shooting my AR-15 w/EOTech, and was thinking it was pretty much just like COD4. The pistols have never felt right, but they got the rifles down pretty well. Never got that impression from HL2.

How are the controls ancient?
This isn't a 2 button NES controller buddy, it's the same controls as pretty much every FPS ever, minus leaning and proning.
Don't know, maybe Valve wanted their players to feel like Gordon Freeman and actually envelope themselves into the plot/gameplay, instead of just ynow... prone under this and shoot endless mans while behind cover with AI teammates.

Dude, these games are nothing like IRL.
Says you. I'll jump 2 stories and see a little red around my vision, but after a few seconds I just walk that shit off.
And I'm totally packing a grenade for when someone kills me.

I really don't think he's talking about folks here. I have no desire to buy MW2, but at the same time it's absolutely stupid for a developer to lock gamers out of something which has traditionally been beneficial to both gamers and publishers (can't play the mod without getting the game first). And as someone who hasn't been following every little detail about MW2 and talking about it with people who already share my opinion, I feel the whole "subway vagrant" thing is directed at other segments of the internet. If not, it's entirely inaccurate. I don't even know where the piracy garbage came from.
Yeah, Activision has every right to try and make more money. Unfortunately, they've turned into a bunch of corporate assholes. If they had at least one collective brain cell, they'd understand that they could still release paid content on the PC if they made the content good enough and properly priced. Instead, Activision is bottom-lining the whole thing and has decided to cripple the game to try and force a higher profit. EA took a beating because of doing shit like that and Activision can expect the same treatment, even from console players.

wow now I've lost all hope for you people.
You're now basing your comparison between HL2 and COD4 as "semblence to reality".
I guess Left 4 Dead and any other game that has unrealistic parts are out of your fun criteria as well.

I actually don't have a problem with the controls at all, aside from the fact that there's no designated grenade button.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but his arsenal of games, especially FPS must be very vague or he is sorely mistaken/ignorant.
You people are fucking amazing.
Fuck goldeneye, distrupter pwned it hard.:x
There are mods that do this for CoD4 already.
Steam Name: Dr.Oblivious
If you can't live for the now, at least live for the future.
I can honestly say I could never rank COD4's SP anywhere NEAR HL2's SP, but that's just me.
That's fine, and I think HL2 and the Episodes are some of the most unenjoyable games I've ever played, but that's just me.
Yeah, but didn't you hear? No mods this time around. So it's cool that they're throwing in that option.
You're a bad person.
Preferring Call of Duty over Half-Life 2 is certainly the most artsy thing one can do.
I will now argue why Madden 10 is a gorgeous work of art compared to Okami.
Or he's in Casandra's shoes and predicted this shit and no one listend.
I meant artsy in taking the opposite polarity of several members possibly for poetic merit.
